Yes—you can generate and download a .docx entirely in the browser, without sending document content to a server. For a strict no-third-party-package requirement, your code must assemble a valid ZIP archive containing Word’s required XML parts, then offer that archive as a downloadable Blob. That approach is practical for simple, text-focused documents, but you take responsibility for package details and unsupported features. If “no dependencies” means no external runtime dependencies rather than no package at all, the docx JavaScript library is another browser-capable option.
What “no dependencies” means for browser DOCX generation
There are two different constraints that are easy to conflate:
- No third-party package: You write the code that creates the DOCX ZIP archive and its XML parts. This is the strict, hand-built approach.
- No external runtime dependencies: You install or bundle a library, but it does not rely on other packages at runtime. The
docxproject describes itself this way; it is still a package dependency in your application.
Both approaches can create a file client-side. Neither requires a server just to package document data for download. Choose based on the document features you need and what your project permits.

A .docx is not plain text or HTML with a Word extension. It is a ZIP archive containing XML parts and relationship metadata. A minimal implementation must generate a valid package, including the document content and the supporting package files Word expects. The docx-lite project describes emitting parts such as [Content_Types].xml, relationships, core properties, word/document.xml, styles, and numbering. See the docx-lite project documentation.

- Classic Office Apps | Includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with ease.
- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- Consider Upgrading to Microsoft 365 | Get premium benefits with a Microsoft 365 subscription, including ongoing updates, advanced security, and access to premium versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more, plus 1TB cloud storage per person and multi-device support for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
The browser-side flow is therefore:
- Represent the document content and supported formatting in your application.
- Generate the required OOXML parts and package relationships.
- Put those parts into a correctly structured ZIP archive.
- Wrap the archive bytes in a Blob with the DOCX MIME type and trigger a download.
Creating XML is only part of the task: the archive structure and relationships must also be right for Word-compatible readers to recognize the file.
Choose an implementation approach
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-build ZIP and OOXML, or use a lightweight implementation such as docx-lite | Small, text-focused documents when your project cannot add a third-party package or build step | You own package correctness and edge cases. The docx-lite README documents headings, paragraphs, bold and italic, links, lists, tables, and page breaks, but says it does not support images, headers, footers, page numbers, footnotes, or editing existing DOCX files. |
Use the docx JavaScript package |
Applications needing a declarative API or richer document structures | It is a package in your project, even though its README says it has zero external runtime dependencies. Browser output and Blob export are documented; bundler and deployment integration depend on your application. |
| Hand-author parts and use browser compression APIs | Projects specifically seeking native browser primitives | Compression by itself does not produce a DOCX. You still need a ZIP container and the required OOXML parts; the reviewed documentation does not establish a complete interoperable recipe using only native APIs. |
When a hand-built DOCX is a good fit
A small implementation can make sense if you control the content, need only basic formatting, and must avoid adding a package. The docx-lite project says it writes its own ZIP container, OOXML, and deflate compression without a library dependency or build step. Those are project claims, not an independent audit. Its documented feature set is useful for generated reports or exports with ordinary text and tables, but it is not a general-purpose Word editor.

Before choosing this route, check whether your document needs any of the following:
- Images, headers, footers, page numbers, or footnotes
- Editing an existing DOCX file or filling a complex Word template
- Advanced layout or other Word features beyond the documented set
- Broad interoperability guarantees across Word-compatible applications
If one of these is essential, the limited hand-built feature set may not be suitable. The available project documentation does not establish a tested implementation for those needs.

Use a library when the package itself is acceptable
The official docx documentation describes an API for creating OOXML-compliant documents in Node.js and browser environments. Its Packer.toBlob(file) API returns a promise that resolves to a Blob for browser use. Read the Packer API documentation and the docx module documentation.
The project README says “No Dependencies – Zero external runtime dependencies.” That means the package does not require other runtime packages according to its own README; it does not mean your application has no library dependency. Review how the package fits your bundler, browser build, content security policy, and maintenance requirements before adopting it. Read the docx repository README.

Download the generated Blob
After packaging the document, a browser download typically uses an object URL and a temporary anchor. The docx-lite README demonstrates this pattern:
const blob = new Blob([docxBytes], { type: "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document" });
const url = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
const link = document.createElement("a");
link.href = url;
link.download = "report.docx";
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(url);
Here, docxBytes must already contain a valid DOCX archive; the Blob and download steps do not create or validate the file format. In production, revoke the object URL after the browser has had a chance to begin the download, rather than revoking it prematurely.

Check browser requirements and document output
The docx-lite README lists TextEncoder, Blob, Uint8Array, and DataView as requirements. It gives minimum versions of Edge 79, Chrome 38, Firefox 19, and Safari 10.1. These are the project’s stated compatibility figures, not independently verified results; confirm support against the browsers your users actually run. Check the project’s current documentation.
Likewise, validate generated files in the Word-compatible readers that matter to your users. A successful download only proves the browser saved bytes; it does not prove the ZIP structure, XML relationships, formatting, or rendering are correct. Test representative documents, including long text and every feature your implementation promises.
Interpret size and compression claims narrowly
The docx-lite README reports a minified size of 18 KB and 6 KB “over the wire,” measured by the project in August 2026. It also reports that its fixed-Huffman compression produced a 48 KB archive for a 500-page document, compared with 30 KB using zlib’s more thorough compression and 3.4 MB when parts were stored uncompressed. These are project-reported examples, not independent benchmarks or general performance guarantees. Your results will depend on the content, implementation, and compression method.
