There is no universal wallet, app, or paid service that can pull coins out of an inaccessible exchange account. First determine whether you have a personal login problem, a platform-wide withdrawal suspension, or an exchange closure or insolvency. Then use only independently verified official recovery or claims channels, preserve your evidence, and protect your credentials. Recovery may be delayed, partial, or impossible, especially when the platform is insolvent.
Identify what “no longer accessible” means
The correct remedy depends on the exchange’s status and on who controls the private keys. A balance shown in an exchange account is normally a custodial claim recorded in the provider’s systems; it is not the same as holding a private key that lets you move the assets yourself.

A withdrawal pause alone does not prove that an exchange is insolvent. It can result from maintenance, a security incident, compliance controls, or liquidity pressure. Verify announcements through a known official website or app, and independently locate regulator, administrator, liquidator, or court notices rather than trusting a message that arrives unexpectedly.

- Download account statements, transaction history, deposit history, and withdrawal history.
- Capture dated screenshots showing balances, asset names, disabled withdrawal controls, error messages, and account notices.
- Record every relevant wallet address, transaction ID, network, date, and amount. Keep the original text exactly as displayed.
- Save identity-verification submissions, approval or rejection notices, and any requests for additional documents.
- Export support conversations, ticket numbers, email headers, and the dates of every contact or failed withdrawal attempt.
- Locate the customer agreement, fee schedule, custody terms, and any version of the terms that applied when you deposited funds.
Keep copies in more than one secure location. Do not alter screenshots or transaction exports; if you annotate a copy, retain the unedited original. California’s Department of Financial Protection and Innovation advises consumers to account for their assets and find the account agreement when an online financial platform becomes inaccessible.
How do I get my crypto out if I can’t log in?
If the exchange appears to be operating and only your account is inaccessible, treat this as an account-recovery problem, not a wallet-recovery problem.
- Navigate independently. Type the exchange’s known official web address yourself or open the app you previously installed. Do not use a link in an unsolicited email, direct message, or text.
- Use the provider’s published recovery flow. Follow the password-reset, authenticator, device-change, or identity-verification instructions shown on the official service. Labels and requirements differ by provider, so a generic “master reset” procedure does not exist.
- Complete only official identity checks. Check that the page or app is the genuine service before uploading identity documents. Never send a password, one-time code, private key, or seed phrase to a person claiming to be support.
- Open one clear support case. Describe the access problem, the date it began, the assets affected, and the recovery methods already attempted. Record the ticket number and every response date.
- After access returns, review before withdrawing. Check account security settings, destination addresses, withdrawal limits, network selection, and any waiting period. Send assets only to a wallet or service you control and have verified.
Do not assume that possession of a hardware wallet or a new recovery phrase will restore an exchange login. Those tools can receive assets after the exchange authorizes a withdrawal; they cannot authenticate you to the exchange or override its controls.
What if my exchange won’t let me withdraw?
A withdrawal restriction affecting many customers requires a different response from a forgotten password. Check the exchange’s official status updates and support notices for the exact scope, affected networks, and stated reason. Save evidence of each failed attempt, including the asset, network, amount, error text, and timestamp.

Check whether the pause is limited
Some restrictions affect one blockchain, one asset, a newly changed address, or accounts awaiting verification. Read the notice for maintenance windows, network congestion, compliance reviews, or other conditions. Do not repeatedly submit transactions if the system is returning errors; a failed request is not proof that funds left the account, and repeated attempts can create confusing records or fees.
Watch for signs of a wider failure
Look for an exchange announcement, regulator statement, administrator notice, or court filing reached independently. A provider that stops communicating, removes withdrawal functionality for customers generally, or announces a wind-down may require a formal claims process rather than ordinary support. The status of the provider matters more than the fact that one button is disabled.
Do not try to bypass custody controls
If the exchange holds the assets in custody, a customer cannot force a transfer by buying a separate wallet, importing an address, or installing recovery software. The exchange’s systems and contractual arrangements control the withdrawal. A self-custody wallet becomes relevant only after a legitimate withdrawal is processed.

What happens to crypto on an exchange that shuts down?
When an exchange enters liquidation, administration, or bankruptcy, stop treating the problem as a normal login ticket. Confirm the exact legal entity named in the notice; a trading brand, a parent company, and a regulated subsidiary may be different entities. Then follow instructions from the administrator, trustee, liquidator, or court.

Verify the proceeding
Find the notice through an independently verified regulator, court, or appointed professional. Check the jurisdiction, case number, appointment date, official contact details, and whether the notice applies to customers of your entity. Do not rely on a social-media post or a message offering to “file for you.”
Prepare and submit the claim
- Read the official claim instructions from beginning to end, including the accepted identity documents and submission method.
- Identify every asset and fiat balance you held at the relevant cutoff date. Use your preserved statements, transaction exports, and screenshots.
- Submit before the stated deadline and save the confirmation, claim number, and a complete copy of what you filed.
- Update your contact details through the official process if you move or change email addresses.
- Monitor later notices for objections, valuation rules, distributions, or amended deadlines.
Do not assume that filing a claim guarantees a payment, a particular coin, or a quick result. UK Insolvency Service creditor guidance states: “If the person or company has no assets you will not get your money back.” California consumer guidance also warns that bankruptcy can take a long time and that the result depends on the individual facts. No general recovery percentage or universal timetable applies.
Custody is the key difference between an exchange and a wallet
In a custodial exchange arrangement, the provider operates the account and holds or controls the crypto under its systems and contracts. Your account balance is an obligation or entitlement defined by that arrangement. You ordinarily need the provider to execute a withdrawal.
In self-custody, you control the private key or recovery method. The Canadian federal consumer agency warns that losing the private key can mean losing access to the wallet. The UK Financial Conduct Authority describes self-custody as a situation in which the user exercises control and the provider has no means to bring about a transfer.

What a hardware wallet can and cannot do
- It can hold keys that you create or import under your control and can provide a destination address for a future exchange withdrawal.
- It cannot reset an exchange password, replace a missing identity check, read a custodial exchange database, or force a paused transaction.
- A recovery phrase backs up keys you already control; it does not back up an exchange account.
- A paid “crypto recovery” application or manual cannot create a private key for assets held by an exchange.
Buying a wallet as a precaution for future self-custody may reduce dependence on an exchange later, but it does not recover funds that remain inaccessible today.

ESMA Q&A ESMA_QA_2320, dated 1 November 2024 and updated 18 February 2026, addresses providers of custody and administration under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets framework. It says those providers must have procedures to return clients’ crypto-assets or the means of access as soon as possible. The answer also discusses voluntary conversion at a customer’s request at withdrawal, subject to the provider’s execution policy and authorization.
This is a jurisdiction-specific regulatory clarification, not a guarantee that an inaccessible or insolvent exchange can satisfy a particular customer’s request. It does not replace the provider’s official process, a proceeding’s claim deadline, or legal advice about the entity and contract governing your account. Rules in other countries may differ.

When to obtain legal or insolvency advice
Consider jurisdiction-specific advice when the amount is material, the provider disputes your balance, a deadline is approaching, or the exchange has entered a formal proceeding. The available path can depend on:
- the exact exchange entity and where it is incorporated or regulated;
- your location and the governing-law and dispute clauses in the customer agreement;
- whether the assets were held in custody, lent, pledged, converted, or commingled under the contract;
- the identity and authority of the administrator, trustee, liquidator, or court;
- the claim valuation date, supported records, and filing deadline.
General consumer guidance cannot determine your entitlement or predict a recovery amount. A qualified lawyer or insolvency adviser can review the agreement and proceeding that apply to your facts. Verify the adviser independently and do not give them your exchange password, authentication codes, private keys, or seed phrase.
Protect yourself from “recovery” scams
People who lose access often receive convincing messages from fake support agents, supposed investigators, or “blockchain recovery” operators. Treat an unsolicited offer to unlock an account or release a claim as a high-risk scam signal. California’s Department of Financial Protection and Innovation puts the warning plainly: “People should be especially cautious about offers of ‘help’ or ‘tools’ to provide access otherwise denied.”
- Do not disclose passwords, one-time codes, private keys, seed phrases, identity documents, or remote-access control to an unexpected contact.
- Do not pay cryptocurrency, an “unlock fee,” a tax advance, or a success deposit to someone promising access.
- Independently type the official exchange, regulator, court, or administrator address instead of following a supplied link.
- Compare the sender’s details with the contact information in an official notice, not with a phone number or email address in the message.
- Preserve the scam message and payment records, then report it to the relevant platform and law-enforcement or consumer-protection authority in your jurisdiction.
A practical decision checklist
Use this sequence to keep the next action aligned with the actual failure:
- Classify the event: Is only your login affected, are withdrawals paused for many customers, or has the provider announced closure or insolvency?
- Identify control: Do you personally hold the private key, or is the balance displayed only inside the exchange account?
- Verify status independently: Check official provider notices and, where relevant, regulator, administrator, liquidator, or court records.
- Preserve evidence: Save balances, asset names, histories, addresses, transaction IDs, verification records, correspondence, and the customer agreement.
- Use the matching channel: Account recovery for a live login problem; official status and support for a withdrawal pause; the formal claims system for insolvency.
- Track dates: Record ticket numbers, failed attempts, notices, claim deadlines, and confirmations.
- Escalate carefully: Obtain qualified legal advice for substantial value or a dispute, without surrendering credentials or keys.
- Reject unsolicited shortcuts: No separate wallet, software tool, or stranger can override an exchange’s custody controls.
What recovery can realistically mean
For an operating exchange, success may mean restoring login access and completing a normal withdrawal. For a platform-wide pause, it may mean waiting for the provider’s systems or compliance process to resume, with no assurance about timing. For insolvency, recovery may instead mean submitting a documented claim and waiting for distributions under the proceeding; the result can be delayed, partial, or zero if the insolvent entity has no assets.
The decisive facts are not the brand name of a wallet or a promise from a recovery service. They are the provider’s current legal and operational status, the custody and contract terms, the records proving your balance, the jurisdiction, and whether you meet the official process’s requirements and deadlines.
