You can wear an Oura Ring and Apple Watch together and control which device contributes each health category to Apple Health. For steps, put Oura first in Apple Health’s Steps data-source list; if unwanted Oura step records continue, turn off Oura’s permission to write Steps. This changes Apple Health’s data handling—it does not stop the Apple Watch from recording steps.
Set up only the data sharing you want
Oura’s Apple Health integration is documented for Gen2 and Gen3 or later rings with an active membership on iOS. Check Oura’s current compatibility and setup guidance if your ring, account, or app version differs.
- In the Oura app, open Menu > Settings > Data sharing > Apple Health.
- Enable the Apple Health connection and choose which categories Oura can share. You do not need to enable every category.
- To review or change Oura’s access from iPhone settings, open Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices > Oura.
Oura documents exports including active energy, heart rate, height, mindful minutes, respiratory rate, sleep, steps, weight, workout routes, and workouts. It can also import categories from Apple Health, including active energy, blood pressure, body fat percentage, cardio fitness, heart rate, resting energy, sleep, steps, weight, and workouts. Oura defines its exported active energy as activity calories that exclude basal metabolic rate. When comparing calorie values across devices or apps, check that they represent the same measure.

Make Oura the preferred source for Apple Health steps
Apple Health lets you order sources separately for each data type. Apple says the source at the top has priority when multiple sources contribute the same type of data; this is not a promise that two devices’ raw step estimates will match or that Apple Health simply adds their totals together. See Apple’s instructions for managing Health data.
- On iPhone, open the Health app.
- Go to Browse > Activity > Steps.
- Tap Data Sources & Access, then Edit.
- Drag Oura to the top of the source list if you want Apple Health to prioritize Oura for Steps.
Oura recommends this ordering to mitigate double-counting when more than one fitness device is in use. It applies to the Steps category in Apple Health; it does not change what the Apple Watch itself records. Apple’s source-ordering controls are category-specific, so adjust another category separately if you want a different preferred source there.

If unwanted Oura step records remain
Disable Oura’s ability to write Steps to Apple Health: open iPhone Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices > Oura, then switch off the Steps write permission. Oura documents this as a fallback if source prioritization does not resolve the issue.

Why step totals can still differ
Prioritizing one source controls how Apple Health handles records for a category; it does not make the devices measure movement identically. Oura notes that wearables use different methods and thresholds to classify steps, so their estimates can differ even when Apple Health prioritizes one source. To inspect what is contributing to a particular category, open that category in Health and review its data sources.
What the Oura Apple Watch app does
The Oura Apple Watch app is a companion to the iPhone app, not a direct connection between the ring and the watch. The ring must sync with the Oura iPhone app before its data appears in the watch companion, and Oura says that update is not real time. The watch app is therefore not a second Oura sensor or an instantaneous data feed.

Choose a preferred source by category
- Steps: Set the preferred source in Health’s Steps data-source list, or disable a device’s write permission if you do not want its steps in Apple Health.
- Sleep, heart rate, workouts, and active energy: Review sharing permissions and source priority for each category rather than assuming the Steps setting applies to them.
- Apple Watch Stand Ring: Oura Member Care notes that Oura steps do not move the Stand Ring because of an Apple limitation. This is specifically about the Stand Ring, not a general restriction on writing step records to Apple Health; see Oura’s Apple Health Integration page.
Settings labels can vary with iOS and app versions. If a path above does not match your screen, consult the current instructions from Oura or Apple.
