Clean your suede hiking shoes first: dirt and residue can hide or interfere with the water-repellent finish. Once clean, test a hidden spot; if water still soaks in, apply a proofer made for suede or nubuck, following its label. This can restore surface water repellency, but it does not make every shoe fully waterproof.
Clean the shoes before reproofing
Mud and other contaminants can mask a shoe’s durable water repellency (DWR), so cleaning alone may restore water beading. Nikwax recommends cleaning before reproofing and cautions that conventional cleaners can leave residue that attracts water. Use a cleaner intended for suede or breathable waterproof footwear, and follow its directions.
- Brush off loose mud and dirt.
- Clean and rinse the shoes as directed by the cleaner. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, which can disturb the suede nap. If you are concerned about color transfer, test the cleaner on a hidden area first; Nikwax notes that color may run during cleaning.
- Let water run over the clean surface. If it beads, you may not need another treatment. If it soaks in, use a compatible suede/nubuck proofer.

Choose a treatment made for suede or nubuck
Use a product whose label specifically includes suede or nubuck footwear, and check the shoe maker’s care instructions—especially if the shoes have a waterproof membrane. A suitable treatment is intended to restore surface repellency while preserving the material’s texture and breathability; it cannot guarantee that the shoe as a whole is waterproof.

- Shake the bottle. With the shoes clean and wet, apply the treatment by sponge or spray, covering the outer and seams.
- Wait two minutes, then wipe away excess with a cloth.
- Let the shoes dry naturally before wearing them.
Test the treatment on a hidden area first: light or colored suede may darken. The application directions are from Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof.
Dry the shoes without damaging them
Keep the shoes at room temperature and away from radiators, fires, and other direct heat. Nikwax warns that heat can dry and crack leather and may cause bonded soles to peel. What reproofing can—and cannot—fix
A water-repellent treatment addresses water absorption at the shoe’s outer material. It does not establish that seams, a waterproof membrane, or the shoe’s overall construction will keep water out in every condition. If the shoes leak despite a clean, repellent outer, consult the footwear maker’s care and warranty guidance rather than applying more product indiscriminately.
