Keep the original image in private storage, then make a separate export for your public portfolio. Apply a restrained text or graphic watermark to that copy, check its metadata and export settings, and inspect the actual file before uploading. In Lightroom mobile, Adobe says watermarks apply to exported copies and leave library originals unaltered.
Keep the original separate from the public image
Start with a private source file that you do not overwrite. Create a distinct copy for the portfolio and watermark that copy during export or save-copy. This makes the public image a derivative rather than a replacement for your original.
Adobe documents this workflow in Lightroom mobile: watermarking is available during Export as and Save copy to device, and “Watermarks apply only to exported copies, keeping your original photos unaltered in your library.” Adobe Lightroom Help describes the mobile feature.

Lightroom supports text and graphic watermarks. Its export controls let you adjust appearance and placement; choose a mark that identifies you without making the image difficult to view. Check the preview at a size close to how visitors will see the work. These are practical design choices, not a guarantee that a mark will deter reuse.

Adobe Learn’s Save and share your photos explains exporting a copy with optional watermark and settings for its appearance and position. Lightroom Classic also supports copyright or custom watermarks on export through its export workflow.
Check metadata and location information
A visible watermark does not remove hidden metadata. Review export metadata settings separately, especially if the image could reveal where it was made. Lightroom Classic documents a Remove Location Info option for GPS metadata, with an exception for DNG files; verify the format and settings of the file you actually export.

Lightroom metadata may be embedded in supported formats or stored in XMP sidecars for proprietary camera raw formats. Adobe explains those distinctions in How to view the photo metadata of an image. For privacy-sensitive work, inspect the exported file rather than assuming a watermark setting also handled metadata.
Inspect the exported file before uploading
- Keep the source private. Retain the original in private storage and avoid editing it in place.
- Export a separate copy. In Lightroom mobile, use Export as or Save copy to device; in Lightroom Classic, use its export workflow.
- Set watermark and metadata options. Choose text or graphic, adjust placement and appearance, and review location and other metadata controls available for the chosen format.
- Open the resulting file. Check that the watermark is legible but not distracting, the image displays as intended, and the output is the copy you meant to publish.
- Review the host’s upload behavior. Confirm what the portfolio service stores and serves before uploading a high-resolution file.
Do not assume the portfolio host discards the original resolution
A portfolio page may show a resized rendition while the service retains a higher-resolution upload. Adobe Portfolio says uploaded images are stored at full original resolution and that it generates multiple renditions for display. Its Image Renditions documentation is a useful example of why display size alone does not tell you what the host stores. Check the policies and settings for the actual service you use.

The Experience Manager example is an enterprise asset workflow, not a feature claim about ordinary portfolio platforms. Adobe’s Watermarks in AEM Assets describes processing-profile watermarking of renditions while leaving the original asset untouched.

A watermark is a visible attribution aid. Adobe’s instructions explain how to apply one to an export or rendition; they do not establish that it prevents copying, screenshots, removal, or reuse. Use the mark to identify the work, not as a security boundary. Keeping the source private, checking metadata, and understanding the host’s storage behavior address separate parts of the publishing workflow.
