The app implied by the title is likely Fermata Auto: its publisher describes it as a media player with a built-in browser that can access YouTube. That identification is an inference, not a confirmation from the title itself. Fermata Auto is a third-party sideloaded option, not an official Android Auto video feature.
What Android Auto officially supports
Google describes Android Auto media use as listening to compatible apps through the car’s speakers. Its help page gives “Play [artist] on YouTube Music” as a voice-command example; that is audio playback, not documentation of YouTube video on the projected car screen. This distinction matters: YouTube Music audio in Android Auto and watching YouTube video on a projected display are different use cases. Google says media apps must be compatible with Android Auto. A sideloaded app appearing on a display does not by itself establish official support or approval.

The AAAD publisher’s July 6, 2026 comparison describes Fermata Auto as a broader media and browser app, while describing CarStream as a simpler, YouTube-focused choice. Its separate guide describes AABrowser as a web-app route. These are publisher descriptions, not an independent compatibility test; app features and behavior may change as Android and Android Auto are updated.

For the feature combination in the title, Fermata Auto is the closest match among these options. If YouTube is the only intended use, CarStream is presented as the narrower alternative. The AAAD pages describe these third-party routes; they are not Google distribution channels. Compare their current publisher guidance with your phone, Android version, Android Auto version, car head unit, and the app release you intend to use.
What sideloading does—and does not—mean
Sideloading means installing an app outside the ordinary Google Play installation route. It does not make the app an officially supported Android Auto app. Google’s Android Auto and Android Automotive policies direct developers to app-quality guidance and Google Play Developer Program policies, but do not specifically establish the approval status or current behavior of Fermata Auto, CarStream, or AABrowser.

Expect compatibility to depend on the combination of phone software, Android Auto, vehicle display, and app release. The AAAD publisher reports changing Android-version recommendations and restrictions affecting sideloaded apps, but those recommendations are publisher claims rather than a cross-device independent test. Its guide’s report of testing a Pixel 7 Pro on Android 16 is likewise the publisher’s stated test, not evidence that the same setup will work for other devices.

Use video only when safely parked
Do not watch or interact with video while driving. Follow your vehicle’s guidance and local law; the cited official Google pages do not settle legality for every jurisdiction. Treat a sideloaded app’s availability on the car display as a technical behavior, not permission to use it in motion.

Google’s May 2025 announcement about video and browser app experiences concerns cars with Google built-in, which use Android Automotive OS. That is distinct from Android Auto, which projects apps from a phone. The announcement is not evidence that projected Android Auto broadly supports video apps: Android Developers’ in-car app announcement.

- Confirm the exact app and current installation instructions on its publisher’s page; do not assume an old APK or guide reflects current Android behavior.
- Check your specific Android version, Android Auto version, phone, and head unit against the publisher’s latest compatibility notes.
- Keep the intended use to a parked vehicle, and consult local rules and your vehicle manual.
- Do not assume that YouTube, Netflix, or other protected video will play: the cited publisher descriptions do not establish universal DRM support or compatibility.
The AAAD comparison mentions an AAWireless adapter in a workaround context. It is optional, not a requirement, and the publisher’s mention does not establish that it will resolve any particular compatibility problem.
