Watch the Yellowstone franchise in chronological order as 1883 → 1923 → Yellowstone → Marshals → Dutton Ranch. This sequence follows the Dutton family from its westward journey in the late 19th century through the modern-day stories and their continuations. Paramount’s May 16, 2026 franchise guide presents this five-series order.
If you would rather experience the shows in the order audiences first encountered them, start with Yellowstone and then watch the prequels. Neither order is required for continuity: choose chronological order for the family timeline, or release order to begin with the original series. The practical difference is where you start, not whether one route is officially mandatory.
Yellowstone chronological order
The chronological sequence moves through successive eras of the Dutton family story. Watch the series as complete shows in the order below; Paramount’s May 2026 guide gives a series-level sequence, not instructions to alternate individual episodes or seasons. You do not need to construct a year-by-year viewing map or stop midway through one title to insert another.

Why this order follows the story
The first two entries are prequels: they take the story back to earlier Dutton generations before the modern family drama. 1883 begins with the family’s westward journey from Texas and points toward the future ranch in Montana. 1923 then follows Jacob and Cara Dutton’s family in the early 20th century. Yellowstone shifts to the 21st century, where John Dutton and his children are at the center of the story. Marshals and Dutton Ranch carry characters from that modern story into what comes next.
This order is therefore a family-era sequence, not an episode-by-episode chronology. The title years are a convenient way to understand the broad movement from an earlier period to a later one, but the viewing recommendation is simply one whole series after another. Nothing in Paramount’s five-series guide asks viewers to pause Yellowstone at a particular episode, alternate between the two 2026 shows, or reorder episodes by fictional date.
It is also helpful to distinguish a prequel from a continuation. 1883 and 1923 look back to earlier Dutton generations. Marshals and Dutton Ranch are placed after the modern flagship because their premises follow characters from Yellowstone into subsequent stories. It is a useful route through the franchise, not a complete account of all the time between generations. If a specific gap or individual episode timeline is what you are trying to resolve, the five-title sequence alone does not supply that detail. For a normal watch-through, there is no need to solve it.
Should you watch in chronological or release order?
Choose based on what you want from a first viewing. Chronological order puts the earlier Dutton history first; release order starts with the series that introduced the franchise and lets the prequels supply backstory afterward. The choice is about viewing experience, not a continuity rule.

Paramount lists the original series as arriving in 2018, 1883 in 2021, and 1923 in 2022; it lists the newer shows in 2026. Hulu’s March 2025 viewing guide also recommends release order for newcomers, arguing that the spin-offs fill in backstory around the base storyline. The two guides support different viewing goals: chronological order follows the Dutton generations, while release order starts with the series audiences met first.
Pick chronological order if…
- You want the family’s earlier history before the contemporary story.
- You are comfortable beginning with prequels rather than the original series.
- You want to move from the late-19th-century setting through the modern-era continuations.
- You already know you want to watch every series and would rather let the family timeline determine the sequence.
Pick release order if…
- You want to start with the original Yellowstone storyline.

There is no need to treat either recommendation as a rule. Paramount’s current guide gives the chronological sequence, while Hulu’s March 2025 guide recommends release order for newcomers. Both lead through the same five titles; they simply place the prequels at different points. If you have already started one way, you can continue rather than restart. The guidance does not say that one order is required to understand the other shows.
Where to stream the shows in the United States
For U.S. viewers, the series are split between services. Paramount’s May 2026 franchise guide lists the four spin-offs on Paramount+ and Yellowstone on Peacock. It explicitly says that Yellowstone does not stream on Paramount+ in the United States. That split is easy to overlook if you assume that all shows associated with Paramount are in the same streaming catalog.

Hulu provides another route for two prequels: its March 2025 guide says 1883 and 1923 require the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME add-on when accessed through Hulu. That is an add-on route for those two titles, not evidence that every show in the franchise is included in a standard Hulu subscription. The Hulu information predates Paramount’s May 2026 franchise-wide listing, so check the current Hulu plan and catalog before subscribing or starting a show.

How to plan your watch-through
- Choose your order. Use the five-show chronological sequence if you want the family timeline, or begin with Yellowstone for release order. You can watch each series in full before moving to the next; the guide does not call for episode-level alternation.
- Check the catalog in your country. The service locations above are U.S.-focused, not a worldwide availability guarantee. A service carrying a title in the United States does not establish that it carries the same title in another region.
- In the United States, plan for the service split. Paramount+ has the four spin-offs in Paramount’s guide; Peacock has Yellowstone. If you are following the whole sequence, check access to both services rather than assuming one subscription includes every series.

- You expected Yellowstone on Paramount+ in the U.S.: Paramount’s May 2026 guide lists it on Peacock instead and says it is not on Paramount+ there. Check Peacock’s catalog for the title rather than assuming that the franchise’s Paramount+ spin-offs share its home.
- You are looking for a new Marshals episode: Paramount lists the series on Paramount+ and says new episodes also air on CBS; confirm the current schedule and catalog. A broadcast airing and a streaming listing are distinct ways to check access.
- You are using Hulu for a prequel: the March 2025 guide specifies the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME add-on for 1883 and 1923. Check whether that arrangement and access remain current. The add-on note is about those two shows, not a blanket claim that all five titles are available through Hulu.
- A title’s location no longer matches this listing: streaming catalogs can change after a guide is published. Check the service directly for current regional availability rather than assuming an older listing still applies.

Can you watch Yellowstone without the prequels?
