You cannot simultaneously fill a phone screen, preserve the video’s original proportions, and show every part of a frame when the screen and video have different shapes. Choose Fit or Best fit to keep the complete, undistorted picture with unused space, or choose Fill/Zoom for a larger picture that may cut off the edges. Avoid stretching unless distorted faces and objects are acceptable.
For the most natural result, rotate the phone to landscape, open the player’s display controls, and select the option that matches your priority: the whole frame or the largest possible image.
The three display choices
A widescreen video and a phone display often use different aspect ratios—the relationship between width and height. A typical landscape video is wider than a portrait phone screen. If the player keeps the video’s proportions, it must either leave some screen unused or enlarge the picture until part of it extends beyond the display.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

With Fit, it reduces the video until both its width and height fit inside the display. The unused portions become letterboxing (bars above and below) or pillarboxing (bars at the sides). With Fill, it enlarges the video until every part of the display is covered; because one dimension is now larger than the screen, the excess is cut away. A Stretch mode changes width and height independently instead of preserving the rectangle’s shape.

| Mode | What you see | What happens to the frame | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fit, Aspect, or Best fit | Entire video, with black or empty areas where shapes do not match | No cropping and no geometric distortion | Subtitles, presentations, sports scoreboards, and any video where edge details matter |
| Fill, Full-screen, or Zoom | Video occupies more or all of the display | Edges can be cropped; the amount depends on the ratio difference | Films and clips where a larger picture is more important than seeing every edge |
| Stretch | Video reaches the display boundaries without unused space | People and objects become wider or taller than intended | Only when eliminating bars matters more than accurate proportions |
Apple’s guidance describes the same trade-off: in aspect-fill mode, the video fills the display and “some edge cropping may occur”; in fit-to-screen mode, the entire video remains visible and letterboxing or pillarboxing is added as needed. See the Apple Developer video playback guidance.
Decide what “without black bars” means to you
People use that phrase for two different goals. Some want the bars removed while keeping every frame pixel. That is only possible when the video and display already have matching proportions. Others simply want the picture to appear larger, even if a narrow strip at the left and right (or top and bottom) is no longer visible. The second goal is what Fill or Zoom provides.
Before changing a setting, pause on a representative scene. A centered landscape may hide cropping, while a title card, a talking head, or a sports scoreboard reveals it immediately. Check a frame with information near all four edges, then decide whether a larger image is worth losing that information.

To keep every part of the picture
- Turn the phone sideways and wait for the player to switch to landscape, if orientation lock is not preventing rotation.
- Tap the video once to reveal playback controls.
- Look for Fit, Best fit, Aspect, or a screen-ratio button. Select the option that keeps the full frame.
- Leave the bars in place. They are the space required to show a wider or narrower frame without changing its shape.
Landscape orientation is usually the best starting point for a landscape source because the phone’s display is wider in that position. It does not guarantee a bar-free picture: a very wide film can still be wider than a landscape phone screen, and a player may intentionally preserve the source shape.
To make the picture larger
- Rotate to landscape first; the wider screen usually reduces the amount of unused space compared with portrait viewing.
- Open the player controls and choose Fill, Full screen, or Zoom, if offered.
- Pause on scenes with faces, captions, scoreboards, or other edge details. Check that nothing important has disappeared.
- Return to Fit if subtitles, logos, or action near the sides are clipped.
Some apps keep a separate full-screen control and zoom control. Full screen may only hide the app’s surrounding interface; it does not necessarily change the video’s fit mode. If the bars remain after entering full screen, look for a second control named Zoom, Fill, Crop, Aspect, or Screen ratio.
Why stretching is a poor default
Stretching changes the horizontal and vertical scale by different amounts. A circle becomes an oval, faces look wider or narrower, and text can appear misshapen. A proportional zoom keeps the image’s shape; it simply lets some of the original frame extend outside the screen.
How to compare the modes
Use three questions when comparing settings:
- How much of the frame remains visible? Fit preserves the whole frame. Fill or Zoom can crop edges.
- Do proportions remain natural? Fit and proportional zoom preserve the image shape. Stretch changes it.
- How much of the display is used? Fill generally occupies more of the phone. Fit can leave black or empty space.
There is no hidden fourth mode that wins on all three questions when the rectangles differ. A setting that promises both a complete frame and edge-to-edge coverage is either relying on a matching source, cropping, or changing the picture’s proportions.

How YouTube handles widescreen and vertical video
YouTube’s mobile player adapts to the video’s aspect ratio rather than forcing every upload into one fixed window. Its Android help documentation says a widescreen video viewed in portrait uses a shorter player, while vertical videos can use a full-screen option. The corresponding iPhone and iPad help page documents the same aspect-ratio behavior. Consult the current platform instructions for YouTube on Android and YouTube on iPhone and iPad.
Practical YouTube sequence
- Open the video in the YouTube app rather than an embedded preview if you need the app’s full playback controls.
- Rotate the phone to landscape and tap the full-screen icon.
- If the video still has bars, determine whether they are outside the picture (player-added space) or visible inside the picture itself (bars encoded into the upload).
- Use any zoom or fill gesture the current app version exposes, then inspect the left and right edges before continuing playback.
YouTube’s player layout and gestures can vary by operating system, device, and app release. Do not assume that a control shown on one phone is present on another; use the labels currently displayed in your player. A browser preview, an embedded player on another site, and the YouTube app can expose different controls even when they play the same upload.
VLC for Android: choose a screen-ratio mode
VLC for Android documents Best fit as its default and lists other screen-ratio choices. The documentation warns that some choices can crop or distort the image, so a setting that removes bars is not automatically a setting that preserves the complete frame. The available labels and behavior are documented in the VLC for Android video-player guide.
Steps
- Start the video in VLC and tap the screen to show the controls.
- Open the screen-ratio or aspect-ratio control. If the controls are hidden, tap again or wait for them to reappear.
- Select Best fit when you want the full picture with its original proportions.
- Try a fill or crop-oriented ratio when you want a larger image. Pause on an edge-sensitive scene and verify what has been cut off.
- If people look stretched, switch back to Best fit or another proportional ratio.
VLC’s list is useful because it makes the trade-off explicit: different screen-ratio choices are alternatives, not simultaneous guarantees. If a downloaded file has unusual dimensions, test Best fit first, then make a deliberate change rather than assuming the last-used ratio is appropriate for every file.
VLC for iPhone and iPad: change the ratio with the playback gesture
VLC’s iOS documentation describes a different control from its Android player. Double-tapping the middle of the screen changes the aspect ratio. A long press on the aspect-ratio button displays the available ratios. These gestures apply to the VLC iOS app, not automatically to other players. See the VLC for iOS playback-gestures guide.
- Play the video and tap once if the controls are not visible.
- Double-tap the center of the picture to cycle through the available aspect ratios.
- For a complete list, press and hold the aspect-ratio button.
- Choose the ratio that keeps the frame intact, or select a more aggressive fill option and check the edges.
Because the iOS and Android VLC instructions use different controls, do not apply an Android gesture guide to an iPhone installation or vice versa. If a double tap does nothing in another app, that app may simply not assign an aspect-ratio action to the gesture.
Netflix and other streaming apps: look for Zoom or Fill
Controls are app-specific. Netflix states that some mobile devices support zooming to use more of the screen and warns that zoom may trim the sides of the video. Availability is therefore not universal across phones, operating systems, titles, or app versions. Its current explanation is in the Netflix Help Center.

- Look for a zoom, fill, or full-screen control rather than changing the phone’s global display size.
- Enable it only if edge cropping is acceptable for that program.
- Disable it when subtitles or important action sit close to the sides.
If no zoom control appears, the app or device may not support it for that title. The absence of a button does not mean the phone is malfunctioning. Streaming services can also change controls by app release, so a help article or video showing a control from another version may not match the current interface.
Black bars outside the video versus bars inside it
Bars added by the player
When the bars are empty areas surrounding an otherwise clean picture, Fit or Best fit is preserving the complete frame. A proportional Fill or Zoom mode may remove some of that empty area by cropping the video’s edges.
Bars encoded into the video
Some uploads contain the black bands as part of the image itself—for example, a widescreen film exported inside a different frame. The player sees those bands as picture content. A fit/fill switch may therefore leave some bars visible or crop more of the actual scene than expected. If you suspect this, pause the video and inspect whether the bars move with the image and contain compression detail rather than being uniform empty space.
When bars are embedded, the player cannot identify them as disposable margins with certainty. Cropping may remove the bands, but it can also remove real picture content because both are part of the same frame. If the file is yours, re-exporting it with the intended dimensions is a source-file task, not a phone display-setting fix.
Protect subtitles and edge details
Captions are often placed near the lower edge, and films may use “safe” areas that keep faces and titles away from the border. A zoom setting can cut into those areas even when the center of the scene looks fine.
- Check a subtitle-heavy scene, not just a landscape shot.
- Inspect both left and right edges for names, scoreboards, maps, or presentation text.
- For sports and video calls, prefer Fit unless you have confirmed that the overlay remains visible.
- If captions are supplied by the app rather than embedded in the video, they may reflow differently after a ratio change; verify readability after switching modes.
Do not judge a mode only from its first frame. A film can place a subtitle, a character, or a plot-critical object close to an edge for only a few seconds. Sample several scenes before settling on Zoom for an entire program.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“The bars remain after I select full screen.”
- Confirm that the phone is actually in the player’s full-screen view; a browser or app window can still surround the video.
- Check whether the bars are embedded in the source image.
- Look for a separate Zoom, Fill, Crop, or screen-ratio control. Full screen can enlarge the player without changing the video’s fit mode.
- Try landscape orientation. A portrait display can be much farther from a widescreen frame than a landscape display.
“The image fills the phone but people look distorted.”
Stretching is enabled. Select Fit, Best fit, Aspect, or another proportional option. If the only alternative is a crop, use the crop rather than non-uniform stretching when natural proportions matter.

“Zoom cuts off subtitles.”
Switch back to Fit, or test a less aggressive ratio. If the app offers independent subtitle positioning or size controls, adjust those after choosing the display mode; do not assume every player provides them.
“Rotation does nothing.”
- Turn off the phone’s orientation lock, then reopen the video.
- Check whether the app itself has a portrait-only or orientation setting.
- Some videos are vertical by design. Rotating the device cannot make their original frame widescreen without adding space or cropping.
“One app fills the screen, but another does not.”
That is expected. Each player decides which ratios, gestures, and zoom behavior it exposes. Compare the controls inside the affected app rather than changing system display scaling, which can alter other interface elements without fixing the video’s aspect ratio.
“The picture is small even though the phone is in landscape.”
Check whether the player is using Fit and whether the source itself includes broad margins. Landscape reduces a mismatch but cannot eliminate one when the source remains substantially wider or taller than the display. A Fill or Zoom option is the only way to enlarge it further, and that necessarily changes what remains visible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing the right mode for common situations
| Situation | Recommended mode | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Watching a film with subtitles | Landscape Fit or Best fit | Preserves the whole frame and keeps subtitle placement predictable |
| Watching a music video where side cropping is acceptable | Landscape Fill or Zoom | Uses more of the display while accepting edge loss |
| Reading a screen recording or slide deck | Fit | Small text and edge controls are easy to lose when cropped |
| Watching a vertical social clip | Player’s native full-screen option | The source itself is tall; forcing a landscape treatment creates a different trade-off |
| Video with faces or geometric graphics | Fit or proportional crop | Avoids the visibly incorrect shape caused by stretching |
| Sports with a persistent scoreboard | Fit unless the overlay has been checked | Scoreboards and timing information are commonly placed near an edge |
| Video call or presentation recording | Fit | Preserves names, shared-screen controls, and people at the borders |
What cannot be fixed with a setting
No phone setting can make all three of these conditions true at once when the source and display have different shapes: the entire original frame is visible, every object keeps its original proportions, and the picture reaches every edge of the screen. Removing bars without cropping requires changing the image’s shape; removing bars while keeping proportions requires discarding some edge content.
A larger phone, a stand, a cable, or a magnifier can change viewing comfort or physical size, but none changes that geometric constraint. The practical solution is to choose Fit when completeness matters and Fill or Zoom when screen coverage matters.
One-minute checklist
- Identify whether the bars are outside the picture or part of the video image.
- Rotate to landscape and disable orientation lock if necessary.
- Open the player controls and find Fit, Best fit, Aspect, Fill, Crop, or Zoom.
- Choose Fit/Best fit for the complete, undistorted frame.
- Choose Fill/Zoom only after checking subtitles and edge details.
- Reject Stretch if natural proportions are important.
- Remember that labels and gestures differ between YouTube, VLC, Netflix, and other apps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove black bars and keep the entire widescreen picture?
Not when the video and phone display have different proportions. Fit or Best fit shows the complete frame with unused space; Fill or Zoom removes more unused space by cropping edges. Stretch removes bars by distorting the image.

Should I watch widescreen video in portrait or landscape?
Landscape usually gives a wider display and reduces the mismatch with a landscape source. Rotate first, then choose Fit or Fill according to whether you value the complete frame or a larger image.
Does YouTube have one universal zoom gesture?
No universal gesture should be assumed. YouTube adapts its player to the video’s shape, and controls can vary by operating system, device, app release, or whether the video is embedded. Use the controls currently shown.
What is VLC’s safest setting for avoiding distortion?
VLC for Android documents Best fit as its default. On iOS, use the aspect-ratio control or double-tap gesture to select a ratio that preserves the frame. Any fill or crop choice should be checked for lost edge content.

Will Netflix zoom work on every phone and title?
No. Netflix says zoom is supported on some mobile devices and warns that it may trim the sides. If the control is absent, that device, title, operating system, or app version may not support it.
How can I tell whether bars are part of the video?
Pause on several scenes. Player-added bars are uniform empty areas outside the picture. Embedded bars move with the image and may show compression detail because they are pixels in the video itself.
Why do subtitles disappear when I zoom?
Subtitles or other important details may be near the frame edge. Return to Fit or use a less aggressive proportional option, then verify captions and edge overlays before continuing.
The Bottom Line
Rotate to landscape, then choose Fit/Best fit for the complete natural image or Fill/Zoom for a larger image with possible edge cropping. Do not stretch unless distortion is acceptable, and remember that app controls differ.
