To watch a separate TV source through an Xbox One, connect the source device’s HDMI OUT to the console’s HDMI IN, then connect the Xbox One’s HDMI OUT to your television. The Xbox acts as a pass-through device: it does not receive cable or satellite channels by itself, replace your provider’s receiver, or create live TV without an external HDMI-output source.

What this setup actually does

The Xbox One can sit between a set-top box and a television. Video and audio from the set-top box enter the console through HDMI-In and leave through the Xbox’s HDMI-Out connection. In Microsoft’s archived setup instructions, the example source is a cable or satellite receiver.

This arrangement is useful when you want the Xbox and television on one HDMI path, or when you want to use the console’s historical TV-input features. It is not a TV tuner. You still need an active television service and a compatible receiver, where the service requires one. Paid or encrypted channels are decoded by the provider’s equipment, not by the Xbox One.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the console as a middle link rather than as the television service itself. The receiver changes channels, authenticates your subscription and supplies the program. The Xbox accepts that receiver’s HDMI output and forwards the resulting picture and sound to the display. If the receiver is switched off, has no subscription, or is set to an input with no program, the Xbox has nothing to show.

Check the ports and equipment first

Xbox One ports

  • HDMI IN: receives video and audio from the external source.
  • HDMI OUT: sends the Xbox display and any passed-through source to the television or an A/V receiver.

These ports are directional. Plugging the receiver into HDMI-Out, or plugging the television into HDMI-In, will not create the intended signal path. Look at the labels on the rear of the console instead of relying on the position of a socket.

External source

You need a device with an HDMI output. A cable or satellite set-top box is Microsoft’s documented example. Another HDMI-output device may work, but the available documentation does not establish universal compatibility with every streaming stick, game console, computer, copy-protected signal, or modern video format.

A streaming service account alone is not an HDMI source. The service must be playing on a physical device that actually has an HDMI OUT port. Likewise, an antenna connected directly to a television is not routed through the Xbox unless a separate tuner or receiver converts that signal to HDMI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Television and optional A/V receiver

The television needs an available HDMI input. If an A/V receiver is part of your installation, the console can connect to a suitable receiver input and the receiver can connect onward to the TV. Confirm that the receiver supports the HDMI audio and video arrangement you intend to use, following its manual.

In a receiver-based theater, the chain is source HDMI OUT to Xbox HDMI IN, Xbox HDMI OUT to an A/V receiver input, then the receiver’s HDMI OUT to the television. Select the receiver input carrying the Xbox and select the TV input carrying the receiver. A receiver that cannot pass the source’s video format or handle its audio may prevent the signal from appearing even when every cable is in the correct socket.

HDMI cable

Use a suitable High Speed HDMI cable for the source-to-console connection. Xbox Wire reported in 2016 that Xbox One consoles shipped with a High Speed HDMI cable, but an Xbox-branded cable is not required. A suitable cable you already own may be used if its connectors and condition are appropriate.

You normally need two HDMI cables for a direct-to-TV arrangement: one from the external source to the Xbox and one from the Xbox to the television. A third cable is needed when an A/V receiver sits between the console and display. No special “Xbox TV” cable, adapter or subscription is established by the documented setup. If you are buying an accessory, purchase a correctly functioning High Speed HDMI cable; do not pay extra merely for an Xbox logo.

How to connect a cable or satellite box to Xbox One

  1. Turn equipment off if the manuals require it. Some televisions, receivers, and source devices specify that connections should be made while powered down. Follow the instructions for your particular hardware.
  2. Locate the Xbox One HDMI IN port. It is on the rear of the console and is labeled “HDMI IN.”
  3. Connect the source to the console. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the cable or satellite receiver’s HDMI OUT. Plug the other end into the Xbox One’s HDMI IN.
  4. Connect the console to the display. Run a second HDMI cable from the Xbox One’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the television. If an A/V receiver is used, connect the console to an appropriate receiver input and connect the receiver’s output to the television as specified by the receiver manufacturer.
  5. Select the correct TV input. Use the television remote to select the HDMI input that is connected to the Xbox One, not the input used by a different device.
  6. Power on the source, console, and display. Allow the receiver to finish starting up and confirm that it is set to the channel or service you want to watch.
  7. Open the HDMI-device viewing control available on your console. The exact app or menu route depends on the software installed on that Xbox One. Do not assume that a historical OneGuide path is present on every current system.

The completed physical chain is: source HDMI OUT → Xbox One HDMI IN → Xbox One HDMI OUT → TV HDMI input. With an A/V receiver, the final leg runs through the receiver before reaching the television.

Initial setup checks

After connecting the cables, verify each leg separately. First confirm that the television can display the Xbox dashboard with the TV set to the Xbox-connected input. Then turn on and tune the cable or satellite receiver. If the dashboard appears but the program does not, the output from the Xbox to the TV is functioning and the remaining investigation belongs to the source-to-console link or the console’s HDMI viewing control.

Keep the source remote available. The Xbox does not replace the receiver’s channel controls. You may still need the provider box’s remote to change channels, enter a PIN, select an input or wake the box from standby.

How to view the passed-through signal

After the cables are connected and the television is on the Xbox input, use the HDMI-input viewing feature that your console software still provides. Microsoft’s old TV instructions used OneGuide-related controls, but the feature has changed over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In 2021, Microsoft removed live-TV listings from OneGuide. Windows Central reported at the time that viewing HDMI devices could continue even though the listings were discontinued. That distinction matters: the removal of a program guide does not physically remove the HDMI-In port, but it also does not prove that every historical OneGuide button or menu is still available on every Xbox One software version.

If you cannot find an HDMI viewing option, check the console’s current Help or TV-related settings and the support documentation for your installed software. The documented material does not verify one guaranteed present-day navigation path, so a menu sequence from an older guide may not match your screen.

Do not confuse the missing listings with a missing subscription. OneGuide’s listing service and the physical HDMI pass-through are separate functions. A receiver can still supply a channel even when no guide grid is shown, while a guide screen cannot produce a picture if the receiver is disconnected or powered off.

What the Xbox One can and cannot provide

Capability What to expect
Pass video and audio from an HDMI source Yes, when the source, console, display, cables, and any receiver are connected in the documented direction and are compatible.
Supply cable or satellite channels by itself No. A separate receiver and, where applicable, a TV subscription are required.
Act as a TV tuner No. HDMI-In accepts an external device’s output; it does not tune broadcast or provider channels on its own.
Provide the old OneGuide live listings No longer as a general expectation. Microsoft ended live-TV listings in 2021.
Guarantee 4K pass-through or zero latency Not established by the cited setup instructions. Do not assume either result for a particular source, display, or console model.
Work with every HDMI device Not guaranteed. The available documentation specifically establishes a set-top-box example, not universal support for all current HDMI sources.

Should you route TV through the Xbox or connect the source directly?

Both layouts can be sensible. Choose according to the ports and controls you need rather than assuming that the Xbox route improves picture quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Arrangement Advantages Trade-offs
Source directly to the TV Uses the television’s normal HDMI input and avoids adding the console to the signal chain. You may need to switch TV inputs separately from the Xbox, and the choice depends on having a spare TV HDMI input.
Source HDMI OUT → Xbox HDMI IN → Xbox HDMI OUT → TV Places the source and console on one Xbox-connected HDMI path and follows Microsoft’s documented pass-through arrangement. It adds another device and cable, depends on the console’s installed software for convenient viewing controls, and does not guarantee compatibility, resolution, or latency characteristics for every source.

A direct connection is usually the shorter troubleshooting path: the source goes to the TV and the Xbox goes to another TV input. Routing through the Xbox makes sense when you specifically want that single Xbox-connected path or have a setup built around the console and an A/V receiver. Neither arrangement is documented as delivering better image quality, lower delay or a particular resolution.

Cost and equipment planning

The pass-through method does not itself create a new television subscription. You need whatever cable or satellite service and receiver your provider requires, and those costs vary by provider and plan. No provider, current receiver model or price is established here, so treat any subscription or equipment charge as a separate household expense.

For hardware, many owners already have at least one suitable HDMI cable. Xbox One consoles shipped with a High Speed HDMI cable according to Xbox Wire’s 2016 guidance, but the included cable is not required and may already be in use for the console-to-TV leg. Count the links before shopping: two cables for source-to-Xbox and Xbox-to-TV, or three when an A/V receiver is inserted. Buy only the missing, suitable cables and avoid assuming an expensive branded cable is necessary.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or missing audio

No picture at all

  • Confirm that the receiver’s cable is connected from HDMI OUT to the Xbox’s HDMI IN.
  • Confirm that the second cable runs from the Xbox’s HDMI OUT to the television, or to the appropriate A/V receiver input.
  • Use the TV remote to select the HDMI input connected to the Xbox.
  • Make sure the external receiver is powered on and producing a channel or other output.
  • Check each device’s manual for required startup order, input selection, or HDMI limitations.

Test with the simplest arrangement first: source to Xbox, Xbox directly to TV, with the receiver temporarily removed. If that works, add the A/V receiver back and select its input and output deliberately. This isolates whether the extra device is handling the signal as expected without asserting that a particular receiver model is incompatible.

The television shows the Xbox, but not the source

The output leg is working, so recheck the source-to-console leg. The source must be an HDMI-output device, and its output must feed the Xbox’s HDMI-In port. If the source works when connected directly to the TV but not through the Xbox, consult the source and console manuals; the cited documentation does not establish that every protected signal or modern format will pass through.

Also verify that the receiver is awake rather than in standby, that it is tuned to a subscribed channel, and that its own input selection is correct. A valid Xbox dashboard does not prove that the external receiver is sending a program.

Picture appears but audio is missing

Check the audio settings and input assignments on the source, television, and any A/V receiver. Microsoft’s archived instructions note that an A/V receiver arrangement must support HDMI audio. Follow the receiver and display manuals rather than assuming that every combination of audio format and equipment is supported.

If sound works when the source is connected directly to the TV but disappears in the Xbox path, compare the source’s selected audio output and the receiver’s supported HDMI audio modes. Do not infer a universal audio-format fix from one setup; equipment manuals are the authority for those settings.

The TV listings guide is missing

That may be expected. Microsoft ended OneGuide live-TV listings in 2021. Listings availability and HDMI-device viewing are separate issues, and the historical reporting does not guarantee the same menu controls on every current Xbox One software version.

The console cannot find an HDMI viewing control

Software menus have changed, and a historical OneGuide instruction may not match a current installation. Check the Xbox’s installed Help or TV-related documentation and confirm that you are working with an Xbox One, not a Series X|S console. The physical wiring remains source OUT to Xbox IN and Xbox OUT to the TV, but this article does not promise a single current button sequence.

Important limitations before you rely on the setup

  • Hardware scope: these instructions concern Xbox One hardware. They should not be treated as instructions for Xbox Series X or Series S.
  • Subscription and receiver: the console does not authenticate a provider subscription or decode encrypted services on its own.
  • Resolution and latency: the cited documentation does not establish a maximum HDMI-In resolution, input-lag figure, or guaranteed 4K pass-through. Avoid promising a particular result without checking the exact console, source, receiver, and TV specifications.
  • Software changes: Xbox menus and TV features can change. A guide written before the 2021 OneGuide listings change may show controls that are no longer present.
  • Source compatibility: the documented example is a set-top box. A different HDMI source may have its own format, protection, or handshake requirements.
  • Signal ownership: the Xbox does not record, decrypt or independently subscribe to the channel. The external receiver remains responsible for access to the service.

Quick verification checklist

  • The external source has an HDMI output and is powered on.
  • The source’s HDMI OUT feeds the Xbox One HDMI IN.
  • The Xbox One HDMI OUT feeds the TV, directly or through a compatible A/V receiver.
  • The television is set to the input carrying the Xbox signal.
  • The cable or satellite receiver is subscribed and tuned to the service you want to watch.
  • You are using a suitable High Speed HDMI cable; an Xbox-specific cable is not required.
  • You are not relying on OneGuide live listings, which were discontinued in 2021.
  • If the signal still fails, you have checked the manuals for the source, console, display, and receiver.

Frequently asked questions

Can I watch cable through an Xbox One without a cable box?

No. The documented arrangement uses a cable or satellite receiver as the HDMI source. The Xbox One is not a tuner and cannot create provider channels from an HDMI cable alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which HDMI port does the cable box use?

Use the cable or satellite box’s HDMI OUT and connect it to the Xbox One’s HDMI IN. The television ultimately connects to the Xbox One’s HDMI OUT.

Can I connect the Xbox One directly to the TV and the receiver to another TV input?

Yes, that is the simpler alternative when the television has enough HDMI inputs. It avoids routing the source through the console, but you switch between the TV inputs directly and do not use the Xbox as the middle link.

Does this work with a streaming stick or another console?

Only if the device provides a compatible HDMI output and its signal can pass through the Xbox setup. The documented example is a set-top box; universal support for every streaming stick, console, protected signal or modern format is not established.

Do I need an Xbox-branded HDMI cable?

No. Xbox One consoles shipped with a High Speed HDMI cable, but any suitable, intact High Speed HDMI cable can serve the connection. The logo is not a requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did OneGuide disappear?

Microsoft ended live-TV listings in OneGuide in 2021. Windows Central reported that HDMI-device viewing could continue, but the old listings and every historical menu control should not be expected on all current software versions.

Will routing the signal through Xbox One add lag or reduce quality?

The cited setup instructions do not establish a latency figure, maximum resolution or guaranteed 4K pass-through. Check the exact source, Xbox One model, receiver and TV specifications instead of assuming a performance result.

What if I get video but no sound?

Check HDMI audio settings and input assignments on the source, Xbox path, TV and any A/V receiver. The receiver arrangement must support HDMI audio, and the manuals for the specific devices determine which formats and settings are supported.

Bottom line

Connect the cable or satellite box’s HDMI OUT to the Xbox One HDMI IN, then connect the Xbox HDMI OUT to the television. Select the TV input connected to the Xbox and use whatever HDMI viewing control remains on that console’s software. The Xbox is only the pass-through link: the external receiver supplies the channels, and OneGuide’s former live listings are no longer available as they were before 2021.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I watch cable through an Xbox One without a cable box?

No. Xbox One HDMI-In needs an external HDMI-output source, such as a cable or satellite receiver; the console is not a tuner.

Which HDMI ports should I use?

Connect the receiver’s HDMI OUT to Xbox One HDMI IN, then connect Xbox One HDMI OUT to the TV or a compatible A/V receiver.

Do I need a special Xbox HDMI cable?

No. A suitable High Speed HDMI cable works. Xbox One consoles shipped with one, but an Xbox-branded cable is not required.

Does OneGuide still provide TV listings?

Microsoft ended OneGuide live-TV listings in 2021. HDMI-device viewing may remain available, but exact controls depend on the installed Xbox One software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will every HDMI device work through Xbox One?

No universal compatibility is established. Set-top boxes are the documented example; other devices may have format or copy-protection requirements.

The Bottom Line

Use this wiring: source HDMI OUT → Xbox One HDMI IN → Xbox One HDMI OUT → TV. The external receiver supplies the channels; the Xbox only passes the signal through.
