The Mummy movies do not form one continuous timeline. The clearest approach is to watch each continuity in release order: the 1999–2008 Brendan Fraser trilogy, followed by its five Scorpion King spin-offs; the six-film classic Universal series beginning with the 1932 Boris Karloff movie; or the standalone 2017 reboot. If you want one modern adventure run, watch the three Fraser films first and then the five spin-offs.
At a glance: choose the continuity before you press play
The same title appears in several unrelated branches, so a single list that mixes every film can imply connections that are not there. Use the table below to pick the version of The Mummy you actually want.
| Branch | Films | How the films relate | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brendan Fraser branch | Three-film core trilogy plus five Scorpion King spin-offs | The eight titles are grouped in Universal’s eight-film collection. The trilogy is the central story; the Scorpion King films are spin-offs. | Action-adventure viewers who want the largest connected franchise package. |
| Classic Universal branch | Six films beginning with The Mummy (1932) | A separate legacy series led by Boris Karloff’s 1932 film and preserved in the Complete Legacy Collection. | Viewers looking for classic horror and the original Universal cycle. |
| 2017 reboot | The Mummy (2017) | A standalone modern-day reboot, not a continuation of either collection. | Someone who wants one contemporary film rather than a series marathon. |
There is no need to alternate between branches. Finish one branch, then decide whether you want the very different tone of another.

1. The Mummy (1999)
Universal’s synopsis follows explorers who resurrect an ancient mummy that has been buried for 3,000 years. This is the starting point for the Brendan Fraser branch and establishes the supernatural-adventure framework used by its two direct sequels.
2. The Mummy Returns (2001)
Watch the second film immediately after the 1999 original. Universal identifies it as the second entry in the trilogy collection, so it belongs before both the later trilogy finale and the spin-off series.
3. The Scorpion King (2002)
This is the first spin-off in the eight-film package. It follows The Mummy Returns in release order, but it is not the second chapter of the core mummy story. Treat it as a branch into a different lead and adventure rather than as a required plot step between the two remaining trilogy films.
4. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
Universal lists this as the third film in the Fraser-era trilogy. Its premise centers on a resurrected dragon emperor, giving the trilogy a new supernatural threat while retaining the branch’s identity. Watch it before the later Scorpion King entries when following the complete release sequence.
5. The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (2008)
The second spin-off follows the 2002 film in the collection’s release order. Its subtitle signals a return to the Scorpion King branch, not a continuation of the dragon-emperor storyline.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
6. The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption (2012)
Continue with the third spin-off after the two 2008 releases. Keeping the spin-offs together makes the change of focus obvious and avoids treating them as numbered chapters of the trilogy.
7. The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power (2015)
This is the fourth Scorpion King film. The subtitle distinguishes it from the main trilogy, so use the franchise order rather than trying to place it inside the mummy films’ central narrative.

Finish the eight-film run with Scorpion King: Book of Souls, the fifth spin-off in Universal’s collection. It is the last title in the combined release-order list supplied for this branch.
The complete eight-film release order
- The Mummy (1999)
- The Mummy Returns (2001)
- The Scorpion King (2002)
- The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
- The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (2008)
- The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption (2012)
- The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power (2015)
- Scorpion King: Book of Souls (2018)
The two 2008 titles are shown in the order used for the franchise list: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor first, followed by Rise of a Warrior. The list is a release-order guide for the titles in the eight-film set, not a claim that all eight share one uninterrupted chronology.

Option B: the full eight-film package
Use the eight-title sequence above when your goal is collection completeness. The practical advantage is that it preserves release order while keeping the franchise’s two strands visible: the trilogy films remain identifiable, and each spin-off is labeled as such by its title.
The classic Universal order
The classic branch begins with Boris Karloff in The Mummy (1932). It is independent of the Fraser films and the 2017 reboot. Universal’s Complete Legacy Collection explicitly groups six films, so watch them in this order:
1. The Mummy (1932)
Boris Karloff’s performance makes this the defining starting point for the classic cycle. Do not confuse it with the identically titled 1999 or 2017 films; the year is essential when searching for the correct version.
2. The Mummy’s Hand
Continue with the second title in the Complete Legacy Collection sequence.

3. The Mummy’s Tomb
This is the third listed film in the classic run.
4. The Mummy’s Ghost
Watch it after The Mummy’s Tomb when following the collection order.
5. The Mummy’s Curse
This is the fifth classic entry in the six-film set.
6. Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy
End the classic collection with this crossover title. Its inclusion in the six-film legacy set is why it belongs in a complete classic marathon, even though its tone differs from the earlier entries.
Classic six-film checklist
- The Mummy (1932), starring Boris Karloff
- The Mummy’s Hand
- The Mummy’s Tomb
- The Mummy’s Ghost
- The Mummy’s Curse
- Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy
This sequence is a collection order, not a bridge into the 1999 trilogy. After the sixth film, you can start the Fraser branch as a fresh continuity if you want to compare eras.
Where The Mummy (2017) fits
The 2017 film is best watched by itself. Universal’s synopsis describes an ancient princess awakened in the present day, and the film is presented as a separate modern reboot rather than an installment in the 1999–2008 trilogy or the 1932-led legacy collection.

Place it at the end of a personal marathon only for convenience; that does not make it a chronological sequel. For a one-film introduction, watch it without any preparation. For a franchise study, view it after completing one of the older branches so the reboot’s separate approach is easy to identify.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why release order works better than one cross-franchise timeline
A single chronological list would combine films that were designed as separate continuities. The 1932 collection has its own six-film identity, the Fraser-era titles are organized as a trilogy plus spin-offs, and the 2017 film is a standalone reboot. The years help distinguish the branches, but they do not create one shared story world.
Release order also protects the way each branch introduces its ideas. In the Fraser branch, the 1999 film comes before its 2001 sequel, while the 2002 Scorpion King spin-off appears before the 2008 trilogy finale in the combined collection list. In the classic branch, the Complete Legacy Collection’s six-title sequence gives you the intended progression without asking you to insert later remakes. In the reboot, there is no earlier film you must watch first.

How to plan a practical watch session
For a short commitment
Start with the Fraser trilogy if you want a multi-film experience with a defined endpoint. Watch the 1999 and 2001 films first, then decide whether to continue to the 2008 finale. If your interest is specifically classic cinema, choose the 1932 film first and continue only if its style suits you.
For a complete modern marathon
Make a checklist of all eight modern titles before starting. Mark the three trilogy films separately from the five spin-offs so you know where the central run ends. After The Mummy Returns, note that the next film is a spin-off; after Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the remaining four titles all return to the Scorpion King label.
For a historical comparison
Finish the classic six-film sequence before starting the Fraser trilogy. The older films are not prequels to the later ones, so switching back and forth by release year can make the repeated title The Mummy confusing. Keep the year visible whenever you search for or save a film.
Collections and availability
Universal’s official The Mummy 8-Movie Collection is designed for viewers who want the Fraser trilogy together with all five Scorpion King spin-offs. A separate The Mummy Trilogy set is suited to viewers who want only the three Fraser films. The Complete Legacy Collection is the relevant package for the six classic films.

Streaming catalogs, digital rental prices, physical editions, and regional rights change frequently. Availability was not established here, so check the current catalog or store in your country and confirm the year before renting or buying. Search terms should include the release year—for example, The Mummy (1999), The Mummy (1932), or The Mummy (2017)—because the identical title can otherwise return the wrong branch.
Quick Recap
Common ordering mistakes
- Putting 2017 after the 2008 film as if it were a sequel: it is a separate reboot, not the fourth Fraser-era chapter.
- Calling the eight-film package one continuous trilogy: only three of those films are the Fraser trilogy; the other five carry the Scorpion King name.
- Using the 1932 film as a prequel to the 1999 film: the classic legacy collection and the Fraser branch are separate.
- Skipping the year in a search: all three branches contain a film titled The Mummy.
- Inserting every spin-off into the trilogy’s plot: watch the trilogy as its own three-film unit, then treat the five spin-offs as an optional expansion.
- Assuming release year alone proves continuity: the 2008 titles belong to different strands of the modern package, so follow the listed branch order rather than building a universal timeline.
