You can watch some streaming services abroad, but access depends on your destination, the service, and the title. A specific exception applies to paid subscriptions during temporary travel between EU Member States: the service must be portable as it is at home. That rule does not guarantee your home catalog worldwide. Before leaving, check your provider’s travel guidance and download eligible titles to a supported device if you may be offline.
What determines whether streaming works abroad?
There is no single worldwide rule that makes every subscription or title available in every country. The practical answer depends on where you are going, whether you are traveling temporarily or moving, and the provider’s availability and licensing for that location. For example, Disney+ says its available content can differ by country or region, and Netflix says selection for streaming and downloading varies by country.
Check two things separately: whether the service operates in your destination, and whether the particular title you want is available there. A working subscription does not necessarily mean every title in your home catalog will play abroad.

Traveling between EU Member States: the portability rule
If you pay for an online content service and are temporarily present in another EU Member State, the service must be accessible as it is at home, including streaming and downloads, without an extra portability charge. The EU describes this as access to your home service while traveling—not a right to choose a foreign catalog from anywhere in the world. See Your Europe’s guidance on accessing online content abroad and the text of Regulation (EU) 2017/1128.

The rule is for temporary travel, not automatically for a move or long-term change of residence. The EU says portability of free services is optional for providers; check that service’s terms rather than assuming it must travel with you. The EU portability FAQ covers these distinctions. Streaming over mobile data in another EU country still uses data from your mobile plan.
How major services describe travel access
| Service | What its guidance says | What to prepare for |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Streaming and download selection varies by country. Netflix also advises connecting from the account’s main viewing location monthly: connect to the internet, open Netflix on a mobile device or at Netflix.com, and stream briefly. | Check the app’s current household and travel instructions before departure. Details are in Netflix’s travel guidance. |
| Prime Video | Members can stream selected titles while outside their home country. Compatible devices can download titles before travel for offline viewing. | “Selected titles” does not mean the whole home catalog. Review Prime Video’s guidance for watching abroad. |
| Disney+ | Subscribers can stream content available in the country or region they are visiting; the catalog may differ by location. | Check destination availability and download desired eligible titles before leaving. See Disney+ availability information. |
Download titles before you go offline
Downloads can be useful on a flight or somewhere with unreliable internet, but they are not available for every title, plan, or device. Confirm eligibility in the app and download the specific titles to the device you will carry while you still have a reliable connection.

For Disney+, downloads require an eligible plan and supported mobile device; the help guidance excludes computers and TV-connected devices. Disney says downloads remain available while the subscription is active and the device connects to the internet at least once every 30 days. Some titles may be unavailable for download or subject to a limited viewing period. Plan names and eligibility can change by country, so check the current terms in your account: Disney+ download guidance.

Prepare your account and device before departure
- Check your destination. Confirm that each service operates there and look up the titles you want where the provider offers a title search or availability information.
- Check the trip type. If traveling within the EU, confirm that your situation is temporary travel and whether the service is paid or free; do not assume the travel rule covers a move.
- Open each app at home. Sign in, install available updates, and review any account, household, or periodic home-connection prompts. Netflix, for example, describes a monthly connection from the main viewing location.
- Download eligible titles. Use the device you will take, confirm plan and device eligibility, check available storage, and allow time for downloads over reliable Wi-Fi.
- Plan for account checks and data. Some services need an internet connection periodically even when you have saved titles. If you stream over mobile data in another EU country, that use counts toward your mobile plan.
Fix a location or playback error
A location error does not automatically mean your account is broken. The service may not be available in the country, the title may not be licensed there, or a location-detection check may be affecting playback. Check service availability and the title first, then confirm that the app can connect for any account checks.

Disney+ says Error 73 can mean the service is being accessed from an unsupported country or that a VPN or IP anonymizer is in use. Its advice is to access Disney+ from a supported country and, if using a VPN or anonymizer, disable it and restart the app. See Disney+ Error Code 73 troubleshooting.
VPN behavior is provider-specific. Netflix says a VPN hides your region and shows only titles available globally; that is Netflix’s description of its own behavior, not a guarantee that a VPN will unlock a home catalog on other services. Check Netflix’s account-country guidance. These service instructions do not establish a general rule about VPN legality in every country.
