The practical answer: In the United States, NFL+ can stream eligible live local and primetime regular-season games and postseason games to a phone or tablet. Before traveling, confirm that the game is included and that your destination is covered. To control usage, prefer trusted Wi‑Fi, disable cellular data for the NFL app when you want Wi‑Fi-only viewing, and use iPhone Low Data Mode when cellular streaming is unavoidable. Outside the United States, a U.S. NFL subscription may not carry over; NFL Support directs international users to check DAZN and local rights.
There is no official, dependable NFL-specific “gigabytes per game” figure in the available documentation. Treat data control as a connection and settings problem rather than relying on an assumed number: check your phone or carrier counter before and after a short session, then plan around your own measured result.
What you can watch on a phone
NFL mobile viewing is narrower than “every NFL game live everywhere.” The NFL’s 2026 fall programming announcement says NFL+ includes live local and primetime regular-season games and postseason games on mobile devices. “Local” is determined by the viewer’s market, so the same game can be eligible in one location and unavailable in another. The announcement is available at NFL.com’s 2026 fall programming lineup.
That mobile entitlement is separate from other NFL+ benefits. Out-of-market preseason games, live audio, highlights, replays and coaches-film access have different rules. Do not assume that an NFL+ subscription replaces every television, Sunday afternoon or international package.

These are the standard prices listed in the NFL’s announcement as researched on October 13, 2026. Prices and features are season-sensitive, so verify the current offer before paying. A 20% annual-plan promotion described in that announcement ended on September 21, 2026; it should not be treated as an ongoing discount.
Check the destination before you leave
NFL subscription products are limited to users in the United States where permitted by law. The NFL subscription terms contain the geographic restriction, and NFL Support says NFL+ is U.S.-only and directs users outside the United States to DAZN. That direction is not a blanket promise that one international package works in every country: destination, season, game and local distributor all matter.
A pre-departure rights check
- Identify the game. Note the teams, kickoff time and whether it is a local, primetime, postseason or preseason contest.
- Confirm the market. Your viewing location, not your billing address, determines whether a game is “local.” Check the NFL app or the current official schedule while you are still at home.
- Check the country. If you will be outside the United States, read the destination-specific NFL guidance and the local DAZN offer before assuming your U.S. account will play the stream.
- Check the device rule. The mobile live-game benefit is for phones and tablets. A laptop, television or casting setup can have different rights.
- Sign in and update beforehand. Open the app on the phone you will carry, confirm the subscription status and install any pending app or operating-system updates over home Wi‑Fi.
Save the official support page and the destination provider’s help page for offline reference. A subscription can be valid while a particular game remains unavailable because local rights differ.

Data savings and viewing reliability are separate decisions. A connection can be inexpensive but unstable, or stable but subject to roaming charges and a cap.

Ask the carrier or eSIM provider for the exact travel terms. Apple’s guidance explains that Data Roaming controls whether the iPhone uses another carrier’s cellular network. Turning it off can prevent roaming charges, but it also removes roaming cellular internet access; Wi‑Fi may then be your only online connection.
Set up an iPhone to prevent accidental cellular streaming
The documented menu paths below apply to iPhone. Apple may label the same area Cellular or Mobile Data depending on region and language.
Review and reset the NFL app’s counter
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- Scroll to the app list and find the NFL app.
- Read the app’s current-period usage. If you want a clean trip baseline, use Reset Statistics at the bottom immediately before departure; record the date because the counter is not automatically a monthly bill.
Apple documents per-app controls and reporting in View or change cellular data settings on iPhone. The phone’s counter and your carrier’s counter can use different billing periods, so treat them as monitoring tools rather than an invoice.
Make the NFL app Wi‑Fi-only
- Go to Settings → Cellular (or Settings → Mobile Data).
- Locate the NFL app in the list.
- Turn its cellular-data switch off.
- Open the app on Wi‑Fi and start the game normally.
With the switch off, that app cannot use cellular data. It can still work on Wi‑Fi. If the game will not start, check that the phone is actually connected to Wi‑Fi and that the network permits streaming. Turn cellular access back on only if you deliberately accept cellular usage.

Turn on Low Data Mode for cellular
- Open Settings → Cellular.
- Tap Cellular Data Options (or the equivalent mobile-data options screen).
- Enable Low Data Mode.
Apple says Low Data Mode restricts background network activity and generally reduces streaming quality; exact behavior varies by app. The setting is not an NFL-specific data cap, does not promise a fixed percentage reduction and does not establish a fixed bitrate. If the picture becomes too soft or playback behaves differently, disable it for the session or move to Wi‑Fi. Apple’s explanation is at About Low Data Mode.
Control roaming separately
- Open Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options.
- Review the Data Roaming switch.
- Leave it off when you do not have a roaming arrangement and want to block roaming cellular internet.
- Turn it on only after confirming the carrier’s country coverage, allowance, speed limit and charges.
Disabling roaming does not make a cellular stream cheaper; it prevents the phone from using that roaming network. Wi‑Fi remains available when the phone is connected to it.
What Low Data Mode can and cannot do
Low Data Mode is best understood as a set of restrictions, not a meter. Apple describes fewer background transfers and generally lower streaming quality. The NFL app chooses how to respond, and the available documentation does not specify an NFL bitrate, a per-game allowance or a guaranteed reduction. Video may still use substantial data if you watch over cellular.
- Use it when you need a lower-quality stream and want to reduce background traffic at the same time.
- Do not advertise it to yourself as “one game equals a known number of megabytes.” No official NFL-specific figure establishes that conversion.
- Combine it with the app-level cellular switch when you need a hard Wi‑Fi-only rule.
- Check the picture and audio after kickoff; a low-data setting can affect quality or app behavior without showing an error.
Measure your own usage instead of guessing
Stream characteristics vary with resolution, adaptive bitrate, advertisements, network conditions and app version. Because no reviewed source provides a fixed, measured NFL stream rate, a short personal measurement is more useful than a generic internet estimate.

A repeatable phone measurement
- Choose one network for the test, such as your travel SIM’s cellular connection. Do not switch between Wi‑Fi and cellular during the session.
- Record the iPhone’s NFL-app counter in Settings → Cellular, and note the carrier’s current usage if its app provides one.
- Watch 10 to 15 minutes of the same type of content you expect to watch while traveling. Keep Low Data Mode in the state you plan to use.
- Stop playback and record both counters again.
- Compare the difference and label it as your own observation, including date, network, settings and video quality. Do not multiply it into a universal NFL rate.
A test can reveal whether your plan’s allowance is plausible for a full game, but it cannot guarantee the same result later. A congested network, a different game feed or an app update can change the stream’s behavior.
Build a low-surprise game-day routine
Before leaving Wi‑Fi
- Confirm the game’s rights at the destination and sign in to the correct NFL account.
- Charge the phone and carry a power source; battery capacity does not change data consumption, but an exhausted phone ends the viewing session.
- Reset or record the cellular counter if you want to audit the trip.
- Decide whether the app should be Wi‑Fi-only or whether a specific cellular allowance is available.
- Download schedules, directions and other non-video information while on trusted Wi‑Fi so those tasks do not compete with the game connection.
At kickoff
- Join the intended Wi‑Fi network before opening the stream, or verify the correct travel SIM and roaming status.
- Check that the NFL app’s cellular switch matches your decision.
- Start playback several minutes early so you can resolve sign-in or rights errors before the game begins.
- Watch the phone’s data counter and the carrier’s alert system if available; stop playback when you are no longer watching.
After the game
Close the video and review the counter. If the increase is larger than your allowance can tolerate, use audio or highlights for later games, move to a permitted Wi‑Fi connection, or change the plan before the next kickoff. Audio and replay availability are separate NFL features, so verify that the alternative is offered for the game and location.

The game is blocked before playback
Recheck the country, market and game category. A U.S. NFL+ entitlement does not establish international access, and local rights can differ even within the United States. Follow the destination guidance from NFL Support rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
The app says there is no internet connection
If you disabled cellular data for the app, confirm that Wi‑Fi is connected and that a browser can load a normal page. If Data Roaming is off abroad, verify that you have Wi‑Fi or an approved non-roaming data line. Public networks that require a browser sign-in may not pass video until you accept their terms.

Playback works on Wi‑Fi but not cellular
Check the NFL app’s switch under Settings → Cellular, then check Low Data Mode and the carrier’s remaining allowance. A plan can throttle or block video after a threshold. Carrier support, not the NFL app, can confirm those account limits.
The picture quality is lower than expected
Low Data Mode can generally reduce streaming quality, and adaptive video can react to congestion. Test once with Low Data Mode off only if the allowance permits, or move to stable Wi‑Fi. Do not disable the setting and assume the carrier will provide unlimited high-quality data.
The stream stops after moving between networks
Changing from hotel Wi‑Fi to cellular, or from a home SIM to a travel line, can interrupt authentication. Stop playback, confirm the active connection, reopen the app and check the game’s rights again. Avoid repeated retries on roaming data while you are diagnosing the issue.

The geographic restriction is the first issue, not data optimization. NFL terms limit subscription products to users in the United States where permitted by law. NFL Support points users outside the United States to DAZN, but the correct package, game slate and blackout rules depend on the destination. Check the local offer directly before departure and confirm whether it supports a phone, live games and the specific competition you want.
An international eSIM or local SIM can provide a separate data connection, but it does not reduce the stream’s data requirement. Compare its country coverage, high-speed allowance, throttling policy, activation process and price with your carrier’s roaming option. If neither service includes enough high-speed data, use authorized Wi‑Fi or choose a lower-data alternative such as live audio when available.
Balance data, privacy and reliability on public Wi‑Fi
Public Wi‑Fi can keep video off a capped cellular plan, but speed and terms vary. Use networks you trust, complete the required sign-in page, and avoid entering sensitive account details on a network you cannot verify. A cellular connection may be more predictable in some locations, yet it can count against a capped or roaming allowance. There is no universal “best” connection: decide using the destination’s rights, the network’s reliability and the cost of the data you have available.

- You need a separate travel connection: compare a travel SIM or eSIM with roaming, but remember that neither changes the stream’s underlying data demand.
Bottom line for a reliable trip
Start with rights, then control the connection. Confirm that the game and destination are eligible, use NFL+ on a phone or tablet where its mobile benefit applies, and choose trusted Wi‑Fi whenever possible. On an iPhone, the NFL app’s cellular switch is the clearest way to require Wi‑Fi; Low Data Mode is a useful quality-and-background-traffic trade-off, not a guaranteed cap. Keep roaming decisions separate from stream volume, monitor your own counters, and use destination-specific guidance when traveling outside the United States.
