You can watch local broadcast stations without a cable subscription in two ways: receive them free over the air with an antenna, or subscribe to an internet live-TV service that carries local stations in your market. Check your address before buying equipment or selecting a service. AntennaWeb and the FCC’s DTV Reception Maps can show which stations are near you, the direction of their transmitters, and the antenna conditions your location is likely to need.

Your two practical choices

Local broadcast channels such as ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX are transmitted from terrestrial towers. A television can receive those signals directly with an antenna, or an internet provider can deliver some of the same stations through a live-TV app. The right choice depends mainly on your address, building, internet connection and whether you want national cable networks or recording features as well.

Approach What you receive Ongoing service charge Internet required? Main limitation
Over-the-air (OTA) antenna Broadcast stations and their available multicast subchannels No charge after the hardware purchase No Reception varies with distance, direction, terrain, buildings and antenna placement
Internet live-TV service Local stations carried by that provider, plus national networks and app features Yes; current fees and lineups vary Yes A station may not be carried in your market or on your plan
Hybrid antenna plus streaming interface Your local OTA stations combined with internet channels in one guide, where supported Internet subscription may still be required for the streaming channels For the app and internet channels Requires compatible hardware, an antenna and a reliable network

There is no universal “best antenna.” Two homes in the same city can need different equipment because one may face a tower through a window while the other is behind a hill or surrounded by taller buildings. Likewise, a live-TV service that carries your local NBC affiliate may not carry the same affiliate in another ZIP code.

Check your exact address before buying anything

Reception and channel carriage are both location-specific. Begin with a free address lookup rather than a manufacturer’s advertised range.

Use AntennaWeb

  1. Open AntennaWeb’s address lookup and enter the installation address.
  2. Review the stations it lists for that location, including the approximate tower distance and compass direction.
  3. Note the antenna type and height recommendations, and record the RF band information shown for each station.
  4. Use the station guide to identify the local affiliates and any additional multicast channels available in the area.

AntennaWeb explains that broadcast reception is determined by a wide range of factors. Distance alone is not enough: terrain, obstructions, antenna type and antenna height can change the result. Treat a product box’s range claim as a rough marketing description, not a guarantee that every listed station will be watchable.

Check the FCC DTV Reception Maps

The FCC’s DTV Reception Maps provide a second address-based view of digital television coverage. Compare the map’s predicted stations and directions with AntennaWeb. If both indicate strong signals from nearby towers, an indoor antenna may be a sensible starting point. If they show long distances, difficult terrain or signals arriving from several directions, plan for a higher-mounted or outdoor antenna and a more deliberate installation.

What an antenna setup requires

The FCC says an over-the-air viewer needs a digital television, or an analog television connected to a digital-to-analog converter box. In either case, an appropriate antenna must connect to the television or converter box. Most modern televisions include a digital tuner and a coaxial antenna input.

  • Antenna: Choose an indoor, attic or outdoor model based on the address lookup and the building’s obstructions.
  • Coaxial cable: Connect the antenna to the TV’s antenna or RF input. Use a cable long enough to reach the chosen location without sharp bends or loose connectors.
  • Digital tuner: A digital TV can tune the signal directly. An older analog set needs a compatible converter box.
  • Power, when required: Some amplified antennas or distribution devices need USB or wall power. An amplifier cannot create a missing signal; it is useful only in suitable installations, such as compensating for cable loss or splitting a signal.
  • Mounting hardware: Outdoor or attic installations may need a mast, brackets, grounding and weatherproof connections. Follow the equipment instructions and local electrical-safety requirements.

If you rent, check rules for exterior mounting before installing an antenna outdoors. An indoor or window-mounted antenna can avoid that work, but walls, energy-efficient window coatings and nearby electronics may reduce reception.

  • Compatibility and Usage Tips: Not suitable for older analog televisions; supports smart TVs and digital TVs. For optimal signal reception, try placing the antenna near a window or in other locations, and test both vertical and horizontal orientations.
  • Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).

Step-by-step: set up free local channels with an antenna

  1. Map the stations. Run your address through AntennaWeb and the FCC map. Write down the stations you want, their directions, distances, RF bands and the suggested antenna type or height.
  2. Choose a starting location. Put an indoor antenna as high as practical, close to a window facing the transmitters when the map supports that arrangement. Avoid hiding it behind a television, inside a metal cabinet or next to large appliances.
  3. Connect the cable. Attach the coaxial cable from the antenna to the television’s antenna/RF input. If you use a converter box, connect the antenna to the box and the box to the television as directed by its manual.
  4. Open the television’s tuner menu. Menu names differ by manufacturer, but look for an option such as “Channels,” “Broadcast,” “Tuner,” “Auto Program,” “Channel Scan” or “Auto Tuning.” Select antenna, air or terrestrial mode rather than cable mode.
  5. Run the scan. Let the television complete its digital channel scan. Do not move the antenna during the scan.
  6. Test the important stations. Check each local affiliate at different times. A channel that appears in the scan can still break up if the signal is marginal.
  7. Adjust methodically. If a desired station is missing or unstable, move the antenna higher or toward the mapped direction, then run another scan. If stations come from opposite directions, test orientations or consider equipment designed for multiple directions.
  8. Rescan after frequency changes. Stations can change the RF frequency used for transmission while keeping the familiar virtual channel number. When a station announces a frequency change, run the television’s channel scan again; the FCC has advised OTA viewers to rescan after such changes.

Indoor, attic or outdoor: choosing the antenna type

Indoor antenna

An indoor model is easiest to install and costs the least to try. It is most reasonable when the map shows nearby stations, the home is not heavily obstructed and the antenna can be placed high and near an exterior wall or window. Expect to experiment with orientation. A scan result is not proof that reception will remain stable in bad weather or when household electronics are operating.

Attic antenna

An attic location can provide more height while keeping equipment protected from weather. Roof materials, foil-backed insulation, ductwork and the attic’s direction toward the towers can weaken or reflect signals. Compare the result with an indoor test before committing to a permanent cable run.

Outdoor antenna

An outdoor or mast-mounted antenna is the usual next step when stations are farther away or blocked by terrain and buildings. Height can improve line of sight, but installation adds cable length, mounting, weatherproofing and grounding considerations. Use the antenna type and height guidance from your address lookup rather than selecting solely by an advertised mileage number.

Can an antenna receive ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX?

Often, yes, but only when those affiliates transmit a usable signal to your address and your antenna covers the relevant RF bands. Availability is not guaranteed by the network name. Your local ABC station may be close and strong while your local FOX station is behind terrain or transmitting from a different direction. The AntennaWeb and FCC results are the reliable way to see which affiliates are predicted for your location.

Broadcast stations may also transmit multicast subchannels. These are additional digital channels carried by a station’s transmitter; the exact lineup depends on the station and market. An antenna receives whatever stations and subchannels reach your home, without adding a separate subscription for each one.

Watching locals through an internet live-TV service

Internet live-TV providers, often described by the FCC as virtual multichannel video programming distributors (vMVPDs), deliver live channels through an app instead of a cable box. They may include local broadcast stations along with national networks, cloud DVR features and on-demand programming. Local inclusion varies by provider, market and plan.

Hulu + Live TV

Hulu + Live TV provides a tool to check which local and national channels are available in your area. Enter your ZIP code or address information in the provider’s current availability checker before subscribing. Do not assume that a channel listed for one city will be available at your home, and recheck the lineup if you move or change plans.

Sling

Sling says that some local channels are included depending on where you live and which plan you choose. Its local-channel availability is therefore not universal. Use Sling’s current market and plan checker, confirm the exact ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX affiliate shown for your ZIP code, and review whether the selected plan includes that station before paying.

Other live-TV apps

Every provider negotiates its own local-station rights. The FCC notes that local broadcast inclusion varies among internet-delivered providers and markets. Compare the current ZIP-code results, supported devices, recording rules and simultaneous-stream limits for the services you are considering; a national channel list is not enough to establish local availability.

Step-by-step: verify and start a streaming service

  1. Check your market first. Open the provider’s official availability page and enter your ZIP code or address.
  2. Confirm the station, not just the network. Look for the local affiliate call sign or station name for each network you need.
  3. Choose the plan. Local stations may depend on the plan tier. Review the current channel list and any regional restrictions at checkout.
  4. Confirm device support. Make sure the service has an app for your television, streaming player, phone or web browser. Availability of a channel does not guarantee support on every device.
  5. Install and sign in. Download the provider’s app, sign in, and allow location verification if requested. Providers use location information to apply local-market rights.
  6. Test before relying on it. Open each local station, check live playback and verify that your internet connection can sustain the stream during the times you watch.

Prices, fees, promotional terms and local lineups change. Treat the provider’s current checkout and channel page as authoritative rather than relying on an old price or a list copied elsewhere.

Combining an antenna with streaming

A hybrid setup preserves free OTA reception while adding internet channels and app convenience. It is useful when a streaming service carries national networks but omits one of your local stations, or when you want antenna reception during an internet outage.

AirTV-style integration

AirTV’s documented setup requires both an OTA antenna and an AirTV adapter/player. The adapter receives the antenna signal, sends it over your home network and integrates local channels with internet channels in the supported interface. The antenna still determines which stations reach your home; the player does not improve a weak signal by itself. Confirm current hardware, app and television compatibility before purchase.

Adding antenna channels to Sling’s guide

Sling documents adding antenna channels to its guide on compatible LG and Vizio televisions. The exact menu and supported models can change, so check Sling’s current compatibility instructions for your television. You still need to connect the antenna to the TV or supported tuner and complete a channel scan before the guide can list the stations.

What the hybrid approach does and does not do

  • It can put OTA stations and internet channels in one viewing experience where the hardware and app support that function.
  • OTA channels continue to depend on antenna reception, even when displayed in a streaming guide.
  • Internet channels and guide data require a working local network and broadband connection.
  • A hybrid device may add recording or guide features, but verify current compatibility, storage limits and supported televisions before buying.

Choosing the right path for your situation

If your priority is… Start with… Why
No monthly bill Address lookup plus an OTA antenna The antenna has no ongoing service charge after the hardware purchase and works without broadband.
National networks in addition to locals A live-TV provider, after ZIP-code verification Paid services can add national channels and app features, but local carriage varies.
Protection against an internet outage OTA antenna, optionally alongside streaming Broadcast reception does not require an internet connection.
A single guide for OTA and internet channels A supported hybrid device or television integration AirTV and selected Sling integrations document this use case, subject to current compatibility.
Recording local programs A compatible tuner/DVR or a provider with DVR functionality Recording features differ by device and service; check limits and compatibility before committing.

Troubleshooting missing or unstable channels

The television finds no channels

  • Confirm the cable is connected to the antenna/RF input, not an HDMI port.
  • Set the tuner to antenna, air or terrestrial mode instead of cable mode.
  • Run the scan again after moving the antenna.
  • Check the map for the correct station direction and whether the antenna covers the listed RF bands.
  • Test a higher position or a window facing the transmitters.

Only some networks appear

Different stations may transmit from different towers or directions. Compare the missing station’s mapped direction, distance and RF band with the antenna’s capabilities. Reorient the antenna and rescan. If one station is blocked by terrain or buildings, an outdoor or higher-mounted installation may be necessary; no antenna can guarantee reception where the signal is not usable.

The picture breaks up

Digital television usually fails as a clean picture followed by dropouts rather than gradually worsening snow. Reduce cable length where practical, tighten connectors, move the antenna away from electronics and test a higher location. An amplifier is not a universal fix: it cannot recover a signal that is blocked or absent and can create overload in a strong-signal installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A channel disappeared after working

Run a new channel scan. A station may have changed its physical RF frequency while retaining its familiar on-screen channel number. If rescanning does not restore it, recheck the station’s current map result and inspect the cable and antenna position.

A streaming service does not show a local station

  • Re-enter the correct ZIP code or enable the app’s location permission.
  • Check the exact plan; local channels can be plan-dependent.
  • Verify that the station is carried in your market rather than relying on a national lineup.
  • Use an antenna for a station the provider does not carry, if the FCC or AntennaWeb map predicts usable reception.

Questions to answer before you spend money

  • Which stations matter? List the specific affiliates and subchannels you watch, not only the network names.
  • Where will the antenna go? Height, window direction and obstructions often matter more than the printed range.
  • Do you have broadband? Streaming and hybrid guides need internet; OTA viewing does not.
  • Do you need recording? Choose a compatible tuner/DVR or a service whose current DVR terms meet your needs.
  • Can the service verify your market? If a provider does not show your local affiliate for your ZIP code, do not assume it will appear after signup.

Bottom line

For the lowest recurring cost, check your address on AntennaWeb and the FCC DTV Reception Maps, select an antenna suited to the mapped distance and obstructions, connect it to a digital TV or converter box and run a channel scan. For a broader bundle of national and local programming, verify each internet live-TV provider’s current ZIP-code lineup and plan. A hybrid antenna-and-streaming setup can provide both free broadcast reception and app-based channels, but it requires compatible hardware and an internet connection for the streaming side.
