To watch live TV, install a supported live-TV service app on your smart TV, phone, tablet, or streaming player, sign in, and open its Live guide. You can also cast from a phone or computer to a compatible TV or receiver. The exact app, device model, operating-system version, channel lineup, location rules, and subscription price depend on the service and your country; the examples below use United States services and support information.
Choose the viewing route that fits your equipment
There are four practical ways to watch an internet-delivered live-TV service:
| Route | What you use | Basic setup | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart TV app | A supported smart television | Find the service app in the TV’s app store, install it, sign in, and open the live guide. | Support varies by television brand, model, operating-system version, and service. The app may not be available on an older TV. |
| Phone or tablet app | iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or Android tablet supported by the service | Install or open the service’s app, sign in, and select a live channel. | Some services require location data for mobile live-TV access. A small screen and mobile-data limits may also affect the experience. |
| Casting | A phone or computer plus a compatible TV or streaming receiver | Put the sender and receiver on the same Wi-Fi network, open the service, choose Cast or AirPlay, and select the receiving device. | Casting is separate from installing a TV app. Compatibility, Wi-Fi, and network permissions are required. |
| Streaming-device app | A supported streaming media player connected to the TV | Connect the player, install the service app, sign in, and use the on-screen live guide. | Do not assume every player works with every service. Check the service’s current supported-device list for the exact model and software version. |
If your television already has a supported app, that is usually the simplest route. If the TV’s software is too old, a supported streaming player can add a newer app platform. Casting is useful when you do not want to install an app on the television, but it depends on both devices and the same local network.
Before you subscribe: check the four things that determine whether it will work
1. Confirm the channel requirement
Write down the channels or local stations you actually watch, including sports, news, regional stations, and specialist networks. Live-TV services have different lineups, and a service that works perfectly on your device may still be unsuitable if it lacks a required channel. Do not treat a general service name as proof that a particular channel is included.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
2. Check the exact device and operating system
Search the provider’s compatibility page using the television model number, streaming-player model, or phone operating-system version. “Smart TV” is a category, not a guarantee that every current app is available. Manufacturer updates matter: Sling, for example, states that its app is compatible with listed devices and software versions that continue to receive operating-system updates from the manufacturer.
3. Check location rules
Local channels and some live-TV features can depend on your location. Hulu states that location data is required to access Live TV on mobile devices with a Live TV subscription. Allow the app’s location permission when prompted, and use the service’s documented location settings rather than attempting to bypass them.
4. Calculate the current total cost
Compare the current recurring subscription charge, taxes or regional fees shown at checkout, and any hardware you must buy. Channel lineups and plan prices change, so a price or channel list found in an older article is not a reliable current comparison. The available support information does not establish a complete current price or channel-by-channel comparison for Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, Sling TV, or Fubo.
How to watch live TV on a smart TV
Step 1: Identify the television’s software platform
Open the TV’s Settings or System menu and note the manufacturer, model number, and software version. The wording differs by brand. You need this information if the app store cannot find the service or if support asks which version you are running.

Step 2: Update the TV before installing the app
Run the television’s built-in software update check while it is connected to the internet. An update can add app-store support, fix sign-in problems, or provide security fixes. If the TV no longer receives manufacturer updates, do not assume a newly released app will install; use a supported external streaming player instead.
Step 3: Open the correct app store
From the TV home screen, open its app store or app marketplace and search the exact service name. Read the publisher name and description before installing. YouTube TV’s official help instructions specifically warn that “The YouTube TV app is different from the YouTube app.” Installing the standard YouTube app will not give you the YouTube TV live guide.
Step 4: Install and sign in
- Select the service’s official app and choose Install, Get, or Add.
- Open it after installation.
- Use the on-screen code or remote control to sign in, following the method offered by the service.
- Complete any household, home-location, or permissions prompts required by the subscription.
Step 5: Open the live guide
Choose the menu item labeled Live, Guide, or Live TV. Select a channel to start playback. The guide may show programs currently airing and upcoming broadcasts; the exact layout is service-specific.

- Recheck the model number and the service’s supported-device list.
- Install all pending TV software updates and restart the television.
- Confirm that the TV’s region is set to the country where the service is offered.
- Check whether the provider supports only newer models or operating-system versions.
- Use a supported streaming media player connected by HDMI if the TV platform is no longer supported.
How to watch live TV on a phone or tablet
Step 1: Install the service’s mobile app
Use the device’s official app store to search for the exact live-TV service. Open the app listing, verify the publisher, and install it. A browser may provide account management, but the dedicated app is normally the intended route for mobile playback.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Step 2: Sign in and allow required permissions
Sign in with the account that has the live-TV subscription. If the service requests location access, read the prompt carefully and allow it when you want mobile Live TV to function. Hulu states that location data is required for Live TV on mobile devices, so refusing that permission can prevent access to the live portion of the subscription.
Step 3: Select Live TV
Open the app’s Live, Guide, or Live TV section, then choose a channel or program. Use Wi-Fi when possible to reduce mobile-data use. If you are on a cellular connection, picture quality may change as the service adapts to available bandwidth.
When mobile playback does not work
- Confirm that the account includes live TV rather than only an on-demand plan.
- Turn on location services and the app’s location permission if the provider requires them.
- Update the app and the phone’s operating system.
- Sign out and back in if the account appears to have the wrong subscription.
- Test on Wi-Fi to separate a mobile-network problem from an account or app problem.
How to cast live TV from a phone or computer to a TV
Casting sends playback control from a phone, tablet, or computer to a compatible television or streaming receiver. It is not the same as installing the service’s app directly on the TV.
Requirements
- A service that supports Cast or AirPlay on the sending device.
- A compatible receiving TV or streaming device.
- Both devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- An active sign-in and, where applicable, a live-TV subscription.
Cast from a phone or tablet
- Connect the phone or tablet and the receiving TV or player to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the live-TV service app and sign in.
- Start a live program or open the live guide.
- Tap the Cast icon or choose AirPlay, depending on the service and device.
- Select the receiving TV or streaming device from the list.
- Use the phone’s playback controls, or the receiver’s remote if the service supports remote control.
YouTube TV’s device instructions describe this same-network process: open YouTube TV, select Cast or AirPlay, and choose the receiving device. The sender and receiver must be compatible and have network access.

- Open the service’s supported website or desktop experience and sign in.
- Start the live channel.
- Choose the browser or service’s Cast or AirPlay control, then select the receiver.
If the receiver does not appear
- Verify that both devices are on the same network name, not one on a guest network and one on the main network.
- Turn off a VPN or network isolation feature temporarily if it prevents local-device discovery.
- Restart the app, sender, receiver, and router.
- Confirm that the receiver supports the service’s casting method; not every smart TV supports every Cast or AirPlay implementation.
- Install the service app directly on the TV or streaming player if casting remains unavailable.
How to use a streaming device when the TV app is unsupported
What counts as a streaming device
A streaming media player is a small device that connects to the television, usually through HDMI, and provides its own app store and operating system. It can be useful when the built-in TV platform is old, slow, or missing the live-TV service.
Setup procedure
- Connect the player to an HDMI input and to power.
- Switch the television to that HDMI input.
- Complete the player’s network and account setup.
- Install any available system update.
- Open the player’s app store and search for the chosen live-TV service.
- Install the app, sign in, and open its Live or Guide section.
Check the service’s own supported-device page before buying. The category “streaming media player” does not mean that every model is universally compatible. Support can depend on the exact model and the software version still maintained by its manufacturer.
How to choose among live-TV services
| Decision factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Channels | Does the current plan include every channel and local station you need? | A compatible app cannot compensate for a missing network. |
| Devices | Does the service support your exact TV, phone, player, and casting method? | Support differs by model and operating-system version. |
| Location | Does the service require a home location, mobile location permission, or regional availability? | Live and local programming can be restricted by geography. |
| Total cost | What is the current recurring charge, and will you need new hardware? | Promotional or outdated prices can give a misleading total. |
| Viewing habits | Will you watch mainly on one TV, several devices, or while traveling? | The most convenient app and permissions depend on how you watch. |
Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, Sling TV, and Fubo all publish service or device information, but the available evidence does not establish a universal winner. Choose only after checking your channels, location, current devices, and the provider’s current terms.

“I installed the wrong app.”
Check the app’s full name and publisher. This is especially important for services with a separate live-TV product; YouTube TV explicitly distinguishes its app from the standard YouTube app.

“The TV says my device is unsupported.”
Record the exact model and software version, then compare them with the provider’s current compatibility list. Update the TV if updates are available. If the manufacturer no longer supports the operating system, move the app to a supported streaming player.
“The live guide is missing on my phone.”
Verify that your account includes live TV, update the app, and enable location access if required. Hulu identifies location data as a requirement for mobile Live TV access.
“Casting worked before but the TV is not listed now.”
Put both devices on the same non-guest Wi-Fi network, restart them, and check that local-device discovery is allowed. Confirm that the receiving device and service still support the selected Cast or AirPlay method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Playback stops or quality drops.”
Test the same program on a stable Wi-Fi connection, close other high-bandwidth activity, and restart the app. If only one device fails, update or reinstall its app. If every device fails, check the service’s status information and your internet connection before changing hardware.
“Local channels are wrong or unavailable.”
Review the account’s home or service location settings and make sure the device is being used in an area where the service offers those stations. Do not infer nationwide availability from another viewer’s channel list.
Privacy, permissions, and account security
Live-TV apps can request location, network, and account permissions. Location may be necessary for regional programming and mobile access, but you should understand what you are granting. Install apps only from the television, phone, or streaming device’s official store, use a unique password, and sign out of shared or temporary devices. Avoid entering account credentials into an app whose publisher does not match the service you selected.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the channels and local stations you need.
- Record the exact TV, phone, tablet, or streaming-player model.
- Check the provider’s current device and operating-system support.
- Confirm that the subscription is offered in your location.
- Check mobile location requirements if you will watch on a phone or tablet.
- Compare the current recurring cost rather than an old promotional price.
- Choose direct TV installation, mobile viewing, casting, or an external player.
- Update the device before installing the app.
- Install the exact official app and sign in.
- Open Live or Guide and test a channel before relying on the setup.
What to expect as support changes
App availability is not permanent. A television that works today may stop receiving a service when its operating system is no longer updated, while a streaming player may gain or lose support after a software change. Recheck compatibility when replacing a device, changing services, or troubleshooting an app that previously worked. The instructions and service details summarized here reflect United States examples available as of October 13, 2026; providers can change device support, channel lineups, location rules, and pricing after that date.
