To watch live TV channels over Wi-Fi, connect a supported television, streaming device, computer, or phone to the internet, then open a live-TV service app. Wi-Fi carries the stream; the service supplies the channel lineup, and a subscription is usually needed for a bundle of live channels. If you only want local broadcast channels, an over-the-air antenna is a separate option.
What you need to watch live TV over Wi-Fi
- An internet-connected device: Use a supported smart TV, streaming device, computer, or mobile device. App availability depends on the exact TV or device model, so check the service’s compatibility page before subscribing. Hulu lists select Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and smart TV models; YouTube TV lists computer, smart TV, streaming device, and mobile viewing categories. Hulu’s Live TV page and YouTube TV’s device information describe supported categories.
- A live-TV service: Install its app and sign in with an eligible subscription. Hulu says viewers need a subscription, supported device, and high-speed internet connection.
- A suitable internet connection: Provider speed recommendations are useful starting points, not guarantees of smooth playback in every home.
How to get live channels on your TV
- Check the service’s device-compatibility page for your exact television or streaming-device model.
- Look up the channel lineup for your ZIP code before paying. Local affiliates and available channels can vary by address and subscription.
- Subscribe to a service that carries the channels you want, then install its app from the TV or device’s app store.
- Connect the TV or streaming device to your home Wi-Fi, open the app, and sign in.
- Start a live channel and check playback. If it buffers, test the connection near the TV and account for other devices using the same network.
Hulu provides a ZIP-code lookup and notes that live channels vary by area and subscription; Sling also offers a local-channel lookup. Check the current lineup directly with the provider before choosing a plan.

A streaming service sends channels through your internet connection and app. Channel bundles generally require a subscription, and local channel availability depends on the service and your location.

Free local broadcast channels
An over-the-air (OTA) antenna receives broadcast signals directly; it does not use Wi-Fi and does not unlock cable channels. Reception depends on where you live and the signal conditions at your home. Sling describes an optional setup that connects an antenna through compatible AirTV equipment to add available local channels to its guide. Check Sling’s local-channel and antenna information for availability and setup details.

Internet speed and household bandwidth
Providers publish different connection guidance. Hulu recommends a sustained download speed of 8 Mbps for live streams and 16 Mbps for 4K content, according to its speed guidance dated September 28, 2026. Sling states that it needs a reliable connection of at least 3 Mbps. These are provider recommendations or requirements, not a promise that a given connection will perform well under every household’s conditions. For a useful check, run a speed test on the device or in the room where you watch, especially if the router is far away. Other people streaming, downloading, or gaming can also compete for bandwidth. If playback is unstable, try moving the device closer to the router or using a wired connection if the device supports it.

Check local channels, devices, and household rules before subscribing
- Channel and affiliate availability: Enter your ZIP code in the provider’s lineup tool; a national channel list does not establish what is available at your address.
- Exact device support: Confirm the model, not just the brand or operating system. Supported apps can differ across generations of the same TV or streaming device.
- Home-network rules: Hulu requires a designated Home network for Live TV on living-room devices. Review Hulu’s Home network guidance if household members will watch in different locations.
- Simultaneous viewing: YouTube TV states that a plan supports up to three devices streaming at once; some additional in-home screen options are tied to add-ons. Check its current plan and account information for applicable limits.
- Plan and add-on details: Compare the current price, channel lineup, and any add-ons on the provider’s own pages before signing up, since packages and terms can change.
