Watch House of the Dragon seasons 1, 2, and 3 first, then watch Game of Thrones seasons 1 through 8. That is the clearest season-level chronological order. HBO describes House of the Dragon as taking place 200 years before Game of Thrones. No official episode-by-episode guide establishes a reliable reason to interleave the shows, so finish each series in its own season order.

The 200-year figure is HBO’s broad description of the series’ setting. It should not be treated as an episode-level calculation or as a promise that the shows can be synchronized by counting years between individual installments. The available official material does not provide exact in-universe start and end dates for every episode.

Watching all three released seasons of House of the Dragon before beginning Game of Thrones therefore gives you the simplest chronological experience without asking you to guess where an individual episode belongs.

Once season 1 is complete, play House of the Dragon season 2 from its first episode through its finale. Keeping the season intact preserves the show’s own narrative progression and avoids inventing an episode sequence that HBO has not published.
3. Watch season 3 of House of the Dragon
Season 3 is the third prequel season in the chronological plan. HBO announced it as an eight-episode season released weekly, with the announced finale date of August 9, 2026. If you are watching after the weekly run, use the service’s season listing and complete all available episodes before moving to Game of Thrones.

4. Begin Game of Thrones with season 1
After finishing the prequel, start Game of Thrones season 1. This is the point at which the watch moves from the earlier Targaryen history to the later story. Keep the series in its published season order.
5. Finish Game of Thrones seasons 2 through 8
Proceed one season at a time: season 2, season 3, season 4, season 5, season 6, season 7, and season 8. There are eight Game of Thrones seasons in total, so season 8 is the endpoint of this two-series timeline watch.
Why you should not interleave episodes
A mixed list might sound more precise than a season-level order, but the official information available for these shows does not establish one. HBO’s description gives the prequel’s broad placement 200 years earlier; it does not publish a table matching each House of the Dragon episode to a specific point between Game of Thrones episodes.
Interleaving without authoritative dates creates several avoidable problems:
- False precision: placing an episode between two others can imply a timeline calculation that has not been documented.
- Broken story flow: switching series in the middle of a season interrupts each show’s own arc and presentation.
- Unnecessary spoilers: a fan-made order may expose a connection or piece of background earlier than either show intends.
- Harder tracking: a season-by-season plan is easy to resume after a break, while a custom mixed list is easy to lose.
For these reasons, the chronological recommendation is deliberately simple: complete House of the Dragon, then complete Game of Thrones.

Chronological order versus release order
There are two sensible ways to approach the franchise, depending on what you want from the first viewing.

As of October 13, 2026, HBO Max’s U.S. help information says that House of the Dragon seasons 1 and 2 and all eight seasons of Game of Thrones are available there. The same information records that House of the Dragon season 3 premiered on June 21, 2026.
That listing is specific to the United States and to the date it was checked. Streaming catalogs can change, and the availability statement does not establish that every season is offered in every country. Before starting, search the service for each season rather than assuming that a listing seen in one region applies elsewhere.
- Confirm that House of the Dragon seasons 1, 2, and 3 appear in your regional catalog.
- Confirm that all eight Game of Thrones seasons are available.
- Check the season and episode labels before pressing play, especially if a service displays a combined franchise page.
- If season 3 is not yet listed in your location, do not replace it with a made-up interleaving order; wait for availability or continue with the seasons you can legitimately access.

HBO announced House of the Dragon season 3 as an eight-episode season with weekly releases. The announced finale date was August 9, 2026. If you watched during the weekly run, mark each episode as it became available and wait for the next scheduled release. If you are watching after the run, use the completed-season listing where available and keep the episodes in their numbered order.
Optional companion reading: Fire & Blood
HBO identifies George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood as the source material for House of the Dragon. The book is optional companion reading, not a prerequisite for understanding the television series.
You can choose among three approaches:
- Watch first: See all three seasons without outside context, then read the book if you want additional background.

- Write down the series and season before you start an episode.
- Record the episode number after you finish it, rather than relying on a service’s autoplay history.
- Do not mark a season complete until its finale has finished.
- Move to the next season only after checking that the service has not restarted playback from an earlier episode.
- When House of the Dragon season 3 is complete, create a new tracker line for Game of Thrones season 1 instead of combining both shows under one label.

Stopping after the first two prequel seasons
Season 3 belongs before Game of Thrones in the stated chronological sequence. If it is available in your region, finish it before starting the later-set series.
Assuming a service’s franchise landing page is a timeline guide
Catalog interfaces often group related programs for convenience. Use the season list above as your guide and verify the individual season label before playing.
Searching for an episode-level crossover order
