For a first, story-focused watch, start with Dragon Ball, continue with either Dragon Ball Z or its tighter recut, Dragon Ball Kai, then watch Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO, and Dragon Ball Daima. Treat Dragon Ball GT as an optional continuity branch after Z, not as a prerequisite for Super. This order introduces the characters and transformations without making you watch duplicated film and television retellings first.
The recommended Dragon Ball story order
The franchise is large enough that a wrong starting point can make major character relationships and transformations feel unearned. The order below follows the practical story progression reflected in the official Dragon Ball chronology and avoids sending a first-time viewer through overlapping versions of the same opening Super-era material.
| Step | Watch | What it contributes | Continuity note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dragon Ball | Goku’s childhood, the first Dragon Ball quest, early martial-arts rivals and the core cast. | The foundation for every later series. |
| 2 | Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Kai | The adult-era conflicts, Saiyan history and the major Z transformations. | Choose one for a first run; watching both in full is optional comparison viewing. |
| 3 | Dragon Ball Super | The post-Z continuation, including divine power, the multiverse and Ultra Instinct. | Toei’s official episode listing runs through episode 131. |
| 4 | Dragon Ball Super: Broly | A Super-era film that expands Saiyan history and continues the post-series storyline. | Place it after the television series for the simplest first watch. |
| 5 | Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO | A later Super-era film with a different character focus and new developments. | Watch after Broly. |
| 6 | Dragon Ball Daima | A later original anime work listed in the franchise chronology. | Use it after the Super-era films in a straightforward viewing plan. |
| 7 | Dragon Ball GT (optional) | A separate continuation branch with its own ending and signature transformation. | Watch after Z if you want that branch; it is not required to understand Super. |
A current guide from GamesRadar+ counted more than 600 episodes and 24 movies across six main series in 2026. That is a guide-published count rather than a permanent total, so it can change when new works are released or classifications are revised.
Why the original Dragon Ball must come first
Dragon Ball is not a detachable prequel. It establishes who Goku is before the Saiyan transformations, why the Dragon Balls matter, how Bulma and the other members of the cast enter his life, and how the series’ martial-arts world functions. Later stories assume you understand those relationships.

Starting with Z gives you spectacular battles immediately, but it also removes the context for Goku’s personality, his friendships and the emotional weight of characters who return in the adult-era story. The childhood series also shows the Dragon Ball quest as an adventure rather than treating the artifacts as a familiar plot device.
Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Kai: choose one main Z route
Z and Kai cover the same broad Z-era story, but they are different viewing experiences. Kai is a recut presentation intended to move more tightly through the core story; Z preserves the original broadcast experience, including its pacing, presentation and associated filler material.
| Decision factor | Dragon Ball Z | Dragon Ball Kai |
|---|---|---|
| Pacing | Original broadcast rhythm, with longer stretches between major plot turns. | Tighter editing aimed at a more direct route through the central story. |
| Filler tolerance | Better for viewers who want the complete original television experience, including material outside the core adaptation. | Usually preferable when you want the manga-adapted storyline with less detour. |
| Presentation | Original-era timing, music and voice-track options vary by release. | Recut timing and release-specific voice and music choices also vary. |
| Best first-watch use | Choose it if broadcast history and a slower, expansive rhythm are part of the appeal. | Choose it if you want to reach the major arcs and transformations more efficiently. |
| Availability | Catalogs differ by country and change over time. Check the current legal service in your region before beginning. | |
Do not alternate between Z and Kai episode by episode. That creates duplicate scenes, inconsistent edits and confusion about which version’s pacing you are following. Pick one complete route, then use the other only if you want to compare how the same material was presented.
What to expect from each stage
1. Dragon Ball: the foundation
Watch the original series in full before moving to Z or Kai. Pay attention to Goku’s changing goals, the way the supporting cast develops and the rules established for the Dragon Balls. Those details explain why later characters make decisions that can otherwise seem abrupt.
2. Z or Kai: the Saiyan and Z-era progression
The Z-era story is where Saiyan identity becomes central and where the first three numbered Super Saiyan stages appear. Whether you choose the original or recut presentation, keep the same continuity order: the Saiyan conflict, the Frieza-era climax, the Cell-era material and the Majin Buu conflict. The transformations are introduced as story consequences, not as a checklist to unlock at the beginning.

3. Super: the post-Z continuation
Dragon Ball Super follows the Z-era story and broadens the setting beyond the earlier world. Its official Toei episode listing ends at episode 131. Watch the television series as one continuous route so that the divine forms, tournament stakes and Ultra Instinct developments arrive in the intended sequence.
4. Broly: the first modern Super film after the series
For a simple first pass, put Dragon Ball Super: Broly after the Super television story. The film adds Saiyan history and continues the modern Super-era narrative without requiring you to interrupt the series for a film whose material may overlap with earlier introductions.

Watch Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO after Broly. It belongs to the later Super-era film sequence and shifts attention to a different group of characters while continuing the post-Z setting.
6. Daima: a later original anime work
Dragon Ball Daima is listed as a later original anime work in the official chronology. Placing it after the Super-era films gives a clean, publication-order-friendly route for new viewers. Because it is not needed to understand the earlier transformations, you can also treat it as a separate later stop once you have completed the main Super path.
7. GT: an optional branch
Dragon Ball GT should be treated as a separate continuity branch. If you want to experience it, watch it after completing Z or Kai. Do not insert GT between Super arcs, and do not wait for GT before starting Super: Super is the post-Z continuation used by the main modern story, while GT’s signature Super Saiyan 4 belongs to GT’s own branch.

Where the films fit without creating duplicate viewing
The early Super-era film material and the television series can cover related opening territory. A first-time viewer generally benefits from finishing the Super television route before moving to the modern films, because that keeps the transformation introductions in one uninterrupted progression and prevents you from watching similar setup twice in immediate succession.
Viewers pursuing strict in-universe chronology can build a film-by-film timeline from the official franchise chronology, but that is a different goal from a clean first watch. Chronological placement can force you to move between series episodes and films, while the recommended order keeps each major presentation together.
There is no need to pause Z or Kai for the later Super films. Finish the chosen Z-era series, complete Super’s listed episodes, then watch Broly and SUPER HERO in that order.
Every major Saiyan transformation in viewing order
| Transformation or state | First relevant story point | How to classify it | Continuity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super Saiyan | Frieza-era climax of Dragon Ball Z | The first major Super Saiyan transformation shown in the main Z story. | Z, Kai and the continuity that leads into Super. |
| Super Saiyan 2 | Cell-era and later Z material | A subsequent numbered Super Saiyan stage developed and showcased during Z. | Z/Kai main continuity. |
| Super Saiyan 3 | Majin Buu conflict | The form Goku displays in his battle with Majin Buu. | Z/Kai main continuity. |
| Super Saiyan God | Battle of Gods material at the beginning of the Super era | A divine-power transformation that opens the path to the later Super forms. | Super-era continuity. |
| Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, also called Super Saiyan Blue | Super-era story after God is introduced | A Super Saiyan transformation using the power of Super Saiyan God; blue hair and eyes define its appearance. | Super-era continuity. |
| Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken | Universe Survival Saga | Goku layers Kaioken over Blue, shown with a red aura over the blue aura. | Super-era continuity. |
| Ultra Instinct Sign | Universe Survival Saga | An incomplete Ultra Instinct state that cannot be held for long. | Super-era continuity. |
| Perfected or complete Ultra Instinct | Later mastery in the same broad tournament storyline | A more complete command of the Ultra Instinct technique rather than a numbered Super Saiyan level. | Super-era continuity. |
| Super Saiyan 4 | Dragon Ball GT | GT’s defining transformation. | GT branch only; do not place it in the Super sequence. |
How to understand the names and categories
Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan Blue are the same form
Different subtitles, dubs, games and merchandise can use different labels. Official Dragon Ball material identifies “Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan” as a Super Saiyan transformation using Super Saiyan God power and calls the blue-haired, blue-eyed version “Super Saiyan Blue.” Treat those names as two labels for the same Blue form, not as separate steps.
Ultra Instinct is a technique and state, not another numbered Super Saiyan level
Ultra Instinct Sign is explicitly incomplete and temporary. The later perfected or complete version represents greater mastery of the technique in the same broad tournament storyline. It should therefore be tracked separately from Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3 rather than added to a simple numbered ladder.

Super Saiyan 4 belongs only to the GT branch
Super Saiyan 4 is essential to understanding GT’s identity, but it is not a missing step between Super Saiyan 3 and Super Saiyan God. Keeping it in GT prevents a common continuity error: mixing a GT transformation into the Super sequence.
A spoiler-conscious way to watch
- Start with Dragon Ball and avoid transformation compilations until you have completed it.
- Choose either Z or Kai before beginning the Z-era run.
- Do not search for a later transformation by name while you are still in an earlier arc; thumbnails and episode titles can reveal major developments.
- Finish Super’s episode 131 television route before watching the modern films if you want the least fragmented experience.
- Watch Broly, then SUPER HERO, and then move to Daima.
- Only add GT when you are ready for a separate branch with its own assumptions and ending.
Common viewing mistakes and fixes
Starting with Super because it looks newer
Problem: You meet an established cast and power system without the childhood and Z-era context that gives their relationships meaning.
Fix: Begin with Dragon Ball, then complete Z or Kai before Super.
Watching Z and Kai simultaneously
Problem: The recut and original versions use different pacing and can make repeated scenes appear to be separate events.

Fix: Select one as your primary route. Save the other for a later comparison.

Putting GT between Super arcs
Problem: GT’s continuity and Super’s continuity are separate, so character states and transformations no longer line up.
Fix: Finish the Super route first, or watch GT as its own post-Z branch without interleaving episodes.
Counting Blue and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan as two transformations
Problem: You create an extra step that official terminology does not support.

Optional manga companion for the Z-era story
If you prefer to compare the animated route with print, VIZ identifies the Dragon Ball Z Complete Box Set as containing all 26 volumes, along with an exclusive poster and collector’s booklet. It is most useful after, or alongside, the Z/Kai portion of the watch because it follows the same broad era rather than replacing the childhood Dragon Ball setup or the later Super material.

Watch Dragon Ball, then one of Z or Kai, then Super, Broly, SUPER HERO and Daima. Add GT afterward only as its own continuity branch.
