If your TV has HDMI but no antenna/coax input, connect the antenna to an external digital TV tuner or converter box, then connect the box to the TV with HDMI. The antenna still uses coax to reach the tuner; HDMI carries the tuned picture and sound to the television. Readers who mean they cannot use coax anywhere in the setup should know that this documented approach is not coax-free.

First, check whether the TV really has an antenna input

Look along the back and sides of the television, and check its manual. An antenna input may be labeled “ANT,” “ANT/CABLE,” “RF,” or “Antenna,” and it may be easy to overlook on a side panel or separate connection box. If you find one and the TV has a built-in tuner, connect the antenna there and scan for channels. TCL’s antenna setup instructions describe scanning the TV’s antenna input for active channels.

Some antennas use 300-ohm twin-lead wire rather than 75-ohm coax. For an antenna input that takes 75-ohm coax, a 300-to-75-ohm adapter may be needed. That adapter only handles the antenna wiring connection; it does not tune channels or convert an antenna signal to HDMI. See TCL’s setup guidance.

Choose the connection that matches your TV

TV and antenna setup Connection What to check
TV has an antenna input and built-in tuner Antenna to TV antenna input Scan for channels in the TV’s menu; use a 300-to-75-ohm adapter only if the antenna’s twin-lead wiring requires it. TCL
TV has HDMI but no antenna input Antenna to external tuner or converter box; box HDMI output to TV HDMI input The box must support the broadcast standard used in your region, and the TV must accept HDMI. Xumo; Philips
TV has only an antenna input, and you want to connect another device’s video output An RF modulator may feed that device’s audio/video output to the TV’s antenna input This is the reverse of connecting an antenna to a TV without an antenna input. Picture quality may be poorer through an RF modulator. Funai Service’s Magnavox manual

Connect an external tuner to a TV with no coax input

  1. Check the TV’s available inputs. Confirm that the TV has an HDMI input, and note which HDMI port you plan to use. A tuner with HDMI output is suitable only if the TV accepts HDMI.
  2. Choose a compatible tuner or converter box. Check that it has an antenna input and HDMI output, and that it supports the over-the-air broadcast standard used in your region. Availability and compatibility depend on the region and model; the cited sources do not validate a specific box for every market.
  3. Connect the antenna to the box. Attach the antenna lead to the tuner’s antenna input—ordinarily by coax. Do not connect the antenna to an HDMI port.
  4. Connect the box to the TV. Run an HDMI cable from the tuner’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the television. Philips documents this antenna-to-box and box-to-TV connection pattern.
  5. Select the correct HDMI input. Use the TV’s input/source control to choose the HDMI port used for the box.
  6. Scan for channels on the tuner. Follow the box’s manual: an external tuner may have its own channel-scan procedure. If the antenna is connected directly to a TV’s antenna input, use the TV’s channel-scan menu instead. TCL’s instructions cover scanning a TV antenna input.

What HDMI, adapters, and modulators can—and cannot—do

An antenna signal needs a compatible tuner to select broadcast channels. In this setup, the external box performs that tuning, and HDMI carries the box’s output to the TV. Philips’s antenna guidance for HDMI-connected accessories addresses the distinction between an antenna connection and an HDMI accessory connection.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • HDMI is not an antenna input. It carries the external tuner’s output; it does not receive or tune antenna broadcasts by itself.
  • A simple coax adapter is not an HDMI converter. A 300-to-75-ohm adapter can connect certain twin-lead antenna wiring to a 75-ohm antenna input, but it cannot replace a tuner. TCL
  • An RF modulator solves a different problem. It can send an external device’s audio/video output to a TV that has only an antenna input; it does not provide the antenna-to-HDMI path described above. Its use may reduce picture quality. Funai Service’s Magnavox manual

If there is no compatible input

If the TV has neither an antenna input nor a video input compatible with the tuner, there is no universal connection established by the manufacturer instructions cited here. Check the exact TV and tuner manuals before buying anything. A chain of converters may be required, and whether it works depends on the inputs, outputs, and signal formats each device supports.

Troubleshoot a missing picture or channels

  • No signal from the tuner: Confirm the antenna is connected to the box’s antenna input, not to the TV’s HDMI port or another connector.
  • The TV shows the wrong screen: Select the HDMI input connected to the tuner.
  • The tuner is connected but finds no channels: Run the tuner’s channel scan as its manual directs, and verify that it supports the local broadcast standard.
  • You expected a coax-free connection: The documented setup still uses coax between the antenna and the external tuner. It uses HDMI only between the tuner and TV.
  • The antenna lead does not fit: Check whether it is 300-ohm twin-lead or 75-ohm coax. An impedance adapter may address a twin-lead-to-75-ohm input connection, but it will not perform tuning or signal conversion. TCL
