For an Owlet Dream Sock, turn off and remove the sensor, then clean it with a soft toothbrush dipped in diluted mild laundry detergent—never soak it. The fabric sock can be submerged in the solution. Rinse away all detergent and let both parts dry completely before using them. Care differs by model: Owlet says the Smart Sock 2 sensor is not washable.
Check your Owlet model first
Do not apply one generation’s cleaning method to another. Owlet’s Smart Sock 3 FAQ says the Smart Sock 2 sensor is not washable, while the Smart Sock 3 sensor and fabric sock are washable according to their model instructions. The current Dream Sock washing guide gives a specific method for cleaning its sensor without submerging it.
If you have an older Owlet model, use the instructions for that model rather than adapting the Dream Sock method. An older official manual describes different sensor-cleaning directions, including running water, which should not be combined with the current Dream Sock instructions: Owlet product manual.
What you need for a Dream Sock
- A small amount of mild laundry detergent—the kind you already use for the baby’s clothes.
- A clean, soft-bristled toothbrush.
- A clean, dry towel.
- A sink or basin for the fabric sock.
Use cool-to-lukewarm water. Owlet advises against hand soap, antibacterial soap, and dish soap, which can be too drying or irritating with prolonged contact against a child’s skin.

How to clean the Dream Sock sensor and fabric
- Turn off and separate the sensor. Follow the instructions for your specific product, remove the sensor from the fabric sock, and confirm its light is off. Owlet says to clean the sensor only when it is off.
- Make a mild detergent solution. Add a small amount of mild laundry detergent to cool-to-lukewarm water.
- Submerge only the fabric sock. Do not put the Dream Sock sensor into the water or soak it.
- Brush the sensor gently. Dip the toothbrush bristles into the solution and tap off excess water. Brush the sensor gently in a circular motion.
- Brush away detergent and soil. Rinse the toothbrush under running water, tap off excess, and brush the sensor again. Repeat, rinsing the brush frequently, until dirt, oils, and detergent residue are gone.
- Dry the sensor completely. Press it gently into a dry towel, then leave it on the towel to air-dry. Do not place it wet on the Base Station, use it damp on the baby, or dry it with direct sunlight or heat.
- Wash and rinse the fabric sock. Gently wash it in the detergent solution, then rinse under running water until no soap remains. Blot with a towel and lay flat or hang to dry.
- Wait until both pieces are fully dry. Resume use only when the sensor and fabric sock are completely dry.
How often to wash it—and when to replace parts
Owlet recommends washing the Dream Sock sensor and fabric sock at least every two weeks. Its guide says dirt, oils, and bacteria buildup, harsh or drying soap, and detergent left behind can contribute to irritation under the sensor. Rinsing thoroughly matters as much as choosing a mild detergent.
Replace the sock or sensor if the sock has stretched or is separating, the fabric or sensor windows are ripped, warped, or otherwise damaged, or the hook-and-loop fastener no longer latches properly.
