Active registered voters in Imperial County are mailed a vote-by-mail ballot; you can return it by mail, at an official county drop box, at the Registrar of Voters’ Office, or at any county Vote Center. To check whether it was mailed, received, and counted, enroll in California’s free Where’s My Ballot? service. For help, call the Registrar of Voters at (442) 265-1060.
Who receives a vote-by-mail ballot?
Imperial County says it mails a ballot to every active registered voter 29 days before Election Day. You generally do not need to request one if you are actively registered. If you have moved or are unsure of your registration status, check your information through the county elections site or the state’s voter registration service before relying on delivery.
The county currently lists the November 3, 2026 General Election. Mailing schedules, return instructions, locations, and hours can vary by election, so use the county’s election page for the specific election you plan to vote in.
How to return your ballot
Complete the ballot, place it in the supplied return envelope, seal the envelope, and sign it where directed. Imperial County’s 2026 election announcement says postage is not required for a mailed ballot. An unsigned envelope or a signature that does not match the county’s records can delay or prevent counting.

| Return method | Deadline and practical considerations |
|---|---|
| The county says the ballot must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by the Registrar within seven days after the election. The California Secretary of State advises mailing at least five days before Election Day to help ensure an Election Day postmark. Postal transit adds uncertainty compared with hand delivery. | |
| Official county drop box | Use a drop box listed by Imperial County for that election. The county’s 2026 announcement said boxes would be open 24 hours beginning May 4 and close at 8:00 p.m. on that election’s Election Day; those dates are specific to that election, not a standing schedule. |
| Registrar’s Office or county Vote Center | Hand delivery avoids postal transit. The county’s 2026 election notice gives 8:00 p.m. on Election Day as the cutoff. Check the current election listing for addresses and hours. |
Imperial County moved to Vote Centers in 2026 under the Voter’s Choice Act, replacing traditional polling sites. Voters may use any county Vote Center for in-person voting and assistance. Check the county’s current listings before travelling.
How to track your ballot
- Go to Where’s My Ballot?, California’s free ballot-notification service.
- Enroll to receive automatic updates by email, text message, or voice call.
- Use the notifications to follow ballot mailing, receipt, and processing status. The California Secretary of State says the service is available in every county and is provided by BallotTrax.
If you cannot use the online service, the Secretary of State’s ballot-status page lists the Imperial County Registrar at (442) 265-1060. County officials can confirm whether a ballot arrived and was counted; if it was not counted, you can ask for the reason.

What to do if your ballot has not arrived or shows a problem
Ballot did not arrive
Check your registration and mailing address, then contact the Registrar of Voters at (442) 265-1060 or votersupport@co.imperial.ca.us. The county’s election page has current instructions for the election. Do not wait until the return deadline if you need a replacement ballot or another way to vote.

Imperial County says it notifies voters when an envelope is unsigned or a signature does not match its records, and provides forms to address these issues. Follow the notice and respond promptly; contact the Registrar if the instructions or deadline are unclear. Check the tracker or confirm with the county rather than assuming the ballot was accepted.

Which return method should you choose?
- Choose mail if convenience matters most and you can mail early enough to meet both the postmark and receipt rules.
- Choose a drop box or Vote Center if you prefer hand delivery and can reach a currently listed location before its deadline. This avoids postal transit, but site hours and availability are election-specific.
- Track after returning the ballot if you want confirmation of receipt and processing. Contact the county if status remains unclear or indicates a problem.
For current dates, drop-box locations, Vote Center addresses, and operating hours, consult the Imperial County Registrar of Voters before acting.
