To volunteer online, choose a candidate, party, or campaign-aligned organization, then find its official website and ask about remote roles currently available. Campaigns may need help with calls or texts, voter information, email and web outreach, digital communications, or other skills-based work—but each organization sets its own openings, training, tools, and eligibility. No specific campaign’s live 2026 openings are established here.
How to find and join an online campaign opportunity
- Choose who you want to support. This could be a candidate, political party, or campaign-aligned organization.
- Find the organization’s official website. Navigate to its volunteer page yourself, and check that the signup form is controlled by the organization before entering personal information.
- Ask about remote work that is available now. Confirm which tasks are open, whether volunteers outside the district or state can participate, what training is required, and what schedule or minimum commitment is expected. No particular campaign’s current openings or residency rules are verified here.
- Submit the official signup form and watch your email. A form submission may be only the first step; wait for instructions before assuming you are assigned to a shift.
- Choose a task and schedule you can sustain. Follow the campaign’s directions, approved scripts, and tool requirements.
What online work might a volunteer do?
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) describes certain uncompensated internet activity for federal elections, including sending or forwarding email, linking to a website, creating, maintaining, or hosting a website, and other internet communications. These are legal examples, not a guarantee that a campaign is recruiting for any particular task. Read the FEC’s volunteer activity guidance.
The FEC’s February 2024 guide for political party committees describes voter registration and get-out-the-vote outreach through email, telephone, phone banks, SMS, and MMS. These are channels used in campaign operations; they do not mean every campaign offers all of them as remote volunteer shifts. See the FEC Campaign Guide for Political Party Committees.

How to compare remote volunteer roles
If an organization offers more than one option, ask about the differences before signing up:
- Task: What will you do, and is the work calls, texts, writing, research, data entry, design, or something else?
- Time: Is there a scheduled shift or flexible asynchronous work? How long and how often is the expected commitment?
- Training and support: Is onboarding provided? Are there approved scripts and a coordinator to contact if a voter asks a difficult question?
- Tools and privacy: Does the campaign provide a platform? Will your personal phone number be visible, and what information will you handle?
- Eligibility: Does the campaign accept volunteers outside the area, and does it apply age, residency, or role-specific screening?
Federal rules to know before volunteering
Uncompensated volunteer services
For federal elections, the FEC says an individual may volunteer personal services without making a contribution as long as no one compensates the individual for those services. The FEC also describes certain uncompensated internet activity as exempt from contribution and expenditure treatment under the Act and from FEC registration or reporting requirements. Those statements concern the federal rules and activities the FEC describes; they are not a complete guide to state or local requirements. Review the FEC’s current volunteer guidance.

Foreign nationals
Under the FEC’s federal guidance, a foreign national may volunteer without compensation but may not participate in campaign decisions involving election-related activity or serve in campaign management. Ask the campaign for instructions about any specific role and its screening requirements. See the FEC guidance.

Employer equipment and paid work time
Campaign services performed during paid working hours can generally amount to a contribution by the employer. The FEC describes limited incidental use of corporate or labor facilities as no longer than one hour per week or four hours per month. Separately, an employer may permit an individual’s volunteer internet activity when internal policies are followed, normal paid work is completed, the activity does not increase overhead, and it is not coerced or conditioned on support for a candidate or party. The FEC’s 2026 candidate operations webinar also says work computer and time use is subject to employer rules and the employee must not be compensated for the activity. Read the FEC volunteer guidance and the 2026 Candidate Committee Operations webinar materials.
As a practical precaution, use your own time and equipment unless your employer’s written policy clearly permits campaign activity. Check applicable rules before using workplace resources to create campaign materials.

Paid promotion is different from unpaid volunteering
The FEC distinguishes uncompensated volunteer internet activity from paid political placement or promotion. Its guidance says paid independent expenditures require disclaimers, and coordination with a campaign can bring a communication under contribution rules. The FEC assesses coordination using payment, content, and conduct. Do not assume that paying to boost political content or running a separate ad is covered by the volunteer internet exemption. Read the FEC’s guidance on making independent expenditures.
