Follow the site manager’s current instructions, stay on designated visitor routes, and leave archaeological material and structures undisturbed. Rules differ from one place to another, so check the official site information before you go.

Follow the site’s rules and stay on permitted routes

Archaeological sites vary in condition, sensitivity, and visitor access. Managers may set opening schedules, fees, booking requirements, group limits, or access restrictions to protect a place. UNESCO’s World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Programme describes these as tools used for individual properties, not universal rules for every site (UNESCO World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Programme).

Use marked paths and follow signs, barriers, staff directions, and closure notices. Routes can be designed to keep foot traffic away from vulnerable surfaces or sensitive areas. ICOMOS’s International Cultural Heritage Tourism Charter (2022) describes site-specific measures including limiting group sizes, restricting entry, closing sensitive areas, and requiring advance bookings.

  • Do not cross barriers or enter closed areas, even if a shortcut or photograph seems tempting.
  • Keep to the route authorized for your ticket or tour; do not assume a path used by other visitors is open to everyone.
  • Follow local instructions on where to walk, gather, or wait, and ask staff if a sign or route is unclear.

Leave archaeological finds and structures untouched

Leave stones, pottery, bones, inscriptions, and other possible finds where they are. Do not remove, rearrange, mark, or trade archaeological material. If you notice an object that appears newly exposed or out of place, tell site staff rather than handling it. UNESCO’s Recommendation on International Principles Applicable to Archaeological Excavations (1956) addresses protection of archaeological heritage and measures against antiquities trade that undermines it.

This is practical visitor guidance, not a claim that one legal rule applies at every destination. Local laws and site regulations differ; follow the rules set by the relevant authority.

Be a respectful guest at living and sacred heritage

Some archaeological places are also sacred, ceremonial, or part of the continuing life of a community. Treat the people connected to a place as hosts, follow their guidance, and respect requests about access, behavior, and photography. ICOMOS’s charter emphasizes host-community participation, community rights, and respect for the values and lifestyles connected to heritage places (ICOMOS International Cultural Heritage Tourism Charter (2022); see also ICOMOS, Heritage at Risk from Tourism (2001)).

Ask before photographing people or ceremonies, and do not photograph restricted interiors or activities. Photography permissions vary by site, and a camera being allowed in one area does not mean it is allowed everywhere.

Choose interpretation that is accurate and considerate

Good interpretation helps visitors understand both the place and the responsibilities that come with visiting it. ICOMOS says responsible heritage tourism should provide “accurate and respectful interpretation, presentation, dissemination and communication” (International Cultural Heritage Tourism Charter (2022)).

Where available and suitable, consider a local guide or a tour that explains the site in context and respects community guidance. When comparing routes or experiences, check that access is authorized, stays clear of fragile or closed areas, offers careful interpretation, and engages host communities respectfully.
