If Mail says an email wasn’t sent, open the Outbox, select the message, check the recipient’s address, then tap Send. Apple says that if Outbox isn’t visible in the mailbox list, the email was sent.
Find the unsent email in Outbox
- Open the Mail app and go to the list of mailboxes.
- Tap Outbox.
- Open the email that’s waiting there and verify the recipient’s email address.
- Tap Send to try again.
Apple explains that an email Mail reports as not sent goes to Outbox. See Apple’s instructions for emails you can’t send on iPhone or iPad.
If Outbox isn’t there
Apple says that if Outbox doesn’t appear in your mailbox list, the email was sent. If you sent it only moments ago, you may still be able to cancel delivery with Undo Send. Apple’s iPhone guide says the default window is 10 seconds; you can adjust it in Settings > Apps > Mail > Undo Send Delay. The available delay choices may vary by iOS version. If Mail still can’t send the message
Work through Apple’s recommended checks before changing account settings:

- Check your connection: make sure your iPhone or iPad is connected to the internet.
- Check for a provider outage: ask your email provider whether its service is down.
- Verify your password: if Mail asks for your account password, try signing in to your provider’s website with the same credentials.
- Ask about account restrictions: contact your provider or system administrator about account settings or security requirements such as two-step verification. You may need a special password or authorization.
Apple lists removing and adding the account again as a later troubleshooting option. Before doing that, sign in to the provider on a computer and confirm the email is available there or saved elsewhere. Changing or deleting account settings may remove email previously downloaded to the device.
