To verify a high-value video game collectible, identify its exact release, compare its parts and seal with reliable examples, check any grading certificate with the issuer, and assemble records that support its ownership history. These steps answer different questions: a matching game and package can support identification, a registry can confirm a grading record, and only documentation can help establish provenance. None alone proves the whole story.
1. Identify the exact release before comparing it
Start by recording the platform, title, region, publisher, edition or printing, and any claimed variant. Packaging and included materials can differ across regions and releases, so a comparison with a vaguely similar copy may lead you astray. CGC’s video game reference guides describe variants and regional differences; its complete-in-box guide outlines expected components such as the box, cartridge, manual, and game-specific inserts.
Use a reference for the specific release, not just the game title. Then list what the seller says is included and compare each item with the expected components. Note missing pieces, substitutions, inconsistencies in printing or materials, and signs of handling or repair. A correct set of components supports identification; it does not establish when the items were assembled or who owned them.
2. Assess the claimed factory seal
Do not treat “sealed” on a listing, an attractive shrink wrap, or a sealed designation as conclusive proof that a game has never been opened. Plastic and seal styles vary by console and publisher. CGC recommends comparing a claimed seal with known copies of the same game; its resealed-game guidance explains why game-specific comparison matters.

Look for inconsistencies in the wrap and its seams against appropriate examples, and consider whether the packaging shows signs of handling or repair. Repackaging can use either authentic or non-authentic plastic after a game has been opened, so the material alone cannot settle the question. A 10x jeweler’s loupe may help you inspect small packaging details, but it cannot authenticate a game by itself.
3. Verify the grading record separately from the physical item
For a CGC-certified game, enter its certification number in the official verification lookup. Compare the record’s description and grade with the game and holder in front of you. CGC says the lookup can help confirm that a holder is genuine and has not been tampered with. A matching entry is useful evidence about the certification record, not a complete history of the item’s ownership.

4. Read the grading guarantee and exclusions
CGC states that video games are inspected by at least two professionals and are guaranteed authentic unless the label says otherwise. Its guarantee excludes video-game designations such as Sealed, New, and Complete/Complete-in-Box, as well as playability and internal contents. The stated compensation limit is $10,000 per video-game collectible under the guarantee; it is not a market-value estimate or an industry-wide standard. A grade or designation is not the same thing as a documented, unbroken chain of ownership. Keep the scope of the service distinct from the question you are trying to answer: a certificate lookup checks a record and holder, grading addresses the item within the service’s terms, and provenance requires records about ownership and history.

5. Build a provenance file and check it for consistency
Ask the seller for records that can connect the item to its claimed history. This is a practical checklist, not a universally prescribed video-game provenance standard.
- Original receipt or invoice, if available.
- Seller and prior-owner details, where available.
- Prior auction or sale records.
- Dated photographs and any documentation that accompanied the collectible.
Compare dates, descriptions, edition or variant claims, and any serial or certification details across the records. Gaps or mismatches do not automatically prove an item is inauthentic, but they weaken the support for a particular ownership history. Treat undocumented parts of the story as unverified rather than filling them in with assumptions.

6. Check the transaction terms before paying
Read the live auction or seller terms and the conditions for the specific lot before committing money. Heritage’s published video-game auction terms, revised August 1, 2024, state that bidders are responsible for reaching their own conclusion about provenance and authenticity before bidding. For the covered video-game terms, a challenge must be made in writing within 30 days of the auction close; remedies are limited. Terms can change, so confirm the current terms and lot conditions rather than relying on an older copy.
7. Escalate uncertainty on a high-value purchase
If the item is expensive and important questions remain, ask a specialist with experience in the relevant console and release to inspect the exact collectible and its records. Compare possible routes by what they actually assess: the game, its components, its seal, the holder, or its ownership documents; whether the review is in person or based on photographs; the expert’s release-specific experience; and the written guarantee, exclusions, cost, timing, shipping risk, and dispute window.

These routes are not interchangeable. A registry lookup does not authenticate every physical detail; a physical examination does not necessarily establish ownership history; and documents can support a history without proving the seal or contents. CGC’s service announcement describes using forensic devices and X-ray equipment to examine sealed games and individual components for hidden details and alterations. That describes CGC’s process, not a promise that every alteration can be detected.
In that October 13, 2022 announcement, CGC Senior Video Games Grading Finalizer Matt McClellan said: “Collectors, especially those new to the space, often don’t realize how frequently games are manipulated or altered to create a more appealing package.” This is CGC’s characterization, not a measured rate of counterfeiting or resealing.
