An Apple threat notification means Apple believes your account or device was individually targeted by mercenary spyware. Apple calls these alerts high-confidence, but says it cannot be absolutely certain. Verify the alert by signing in to account.apple.com yourself, then follow Apple’s guidance and seek expert help. Do not use links or contact details in a suspicious message to verify it.
What does an Apple threat notification mean?
Apple says it sends these alerts when it believes someone may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware, based on who they are or what they do. The attacks are unusually sophisticated, expensive, and directed at a small number of people. Apple has cited journalists, activists, politicians, and diplomats as examples of people historically associated with such targeting; the list is not exhaustive.
Apple describes its notifications as high-confidence alerts, while acknowledging that its investigations cannot establish absolute certainty. The company does not publish its detection criteria, saying that disclosure could help attackers adapt. Nor does it attribute a notification or attack to a named attacker or geographic region. The alert is serious, but it is not a complete forensic account of what happened or who was responsible.
Apple says the vast majority of users will never be targeted by mercenary spyware. It reported that, since 2021, it had sent notifications multiple times a year as it detected attacks and had notified users in more than 150 countries. Those are Apple’s figures, published in its support guidance on August 13, 2026; they are not an independent count or proof of the circumstances of any individual alert.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
How can you tell if an Apple spyware alert is real?
Notification formats can vary by device model and software version. Apple says an alert may appear on an iPhone Lock Screen or in Settings, arrive by email at an address associated with your Apple Account, or appear as a banner at the top of account.apple.com after sign-in. Apple’s current guidance also says targeted users are notified directly on iPhone and by email from Apple Threat Notifications (threat-notifications@email.apple.com). Do not rely on the sender address alone: email can be spoofed, and delivery details can change.
- Open a browser yourself. Type account.apple.com into the address bar or use a trusted bookmark; do not follow a link in the message.
- Sign in and check for the notification. A banner at the top of your account page is Apple’s recommended way to verify the alert.
- Do not provide credentials or install anything from a message. Apple says its threat notifications never ask you to click a link, open a file, install an app or profile, or disclose your Apple Account password or verification code by email or phone.
If a message asks for any of those actions, treat it as suspicious. Do not reply, download an attachment, or follow instructions telling you to “verify” the alert through a supplied link or phone number.
What should you do if Apple says you were targeted?
Take the alert seriously and use the guidance included with it. Secure your accounts and devices, enable Lockdown Mode if appropriate, and get help from a specialist. Apple specifically recommends Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline for rapid-response assistance; Apple says it is available around the clock. Outside organizations can offer tailored advice, but Apple cautions that they do not know what triggered your particular notification.

If you believe you face a credible risk of targeted attacks even without receiving a notification, Apple says you can enable Lockdown Mode. A notification is not a prerequisite for using it.
Should you turn on Lockdown Mode?
Lockdown Mode is an optional, high-friction security setting intended for the very few people who may face highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. It reduces potential attack surface by strictly limiting certain apps, websites, and features. That can change ordinary device use: Apple identifies tradeoffs affecting connectivity, device management, FaceTime, Mail, Messages, Safari, and WebKit.

For iPhone, Apple’s support page gives the path as Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode. Read the on-screen explanation before enabling it, and consider the impact on the apps and services you rely on. Apple’s documentation covers supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch operating systems; supported versions and protections can change, so check your device’s current software and settings.
Apple says later operating-system releases add protections and recommends updating devices before enabling Lockdown Mode to get the complete set of protections. Its iPhone guidance also says all of your devices need Lockdown Mode enabled for complete protection. It is not a routine setting Apple says everyone needs: the added restrictions are aimed at people with a reason to believe they may be targeted.

What security steps make sense for everyone?
Apple’s baseline recommendations apply even if you have never received a threat notification:
- Keep your devices’ operating systems up to date.
- Protect devices with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID.
- Use two-factor authentication and a strong Apple Account password.
- Turn on Stolen Device Protection.
- Install apps from the App Store.
- Use strong, unique passwords and passkeys where available.
- Avoid links and attachments from unknown senders.
These steps strengthen everyday account and device security; they do not establish whether spyware is present or replace expert response to a credible targeted-risk concern.

Can an iPhone be infected with spyware?
Apple’s threat notifications address suspected individual targeting with mercenary spyware, not ordinary security warnings or a general claim that every iPhone is infected. Apple says most users will never face this kind of attack. If you receive a verified notification, follow its instructions and get specialist support rather than treating a consumer security app or diagnostic tool as a confirmed way to detect or remove mercenary spyware.
