Before forwarding an event notice or holiday claim, pause and check who originated it, whether its details match the date and place, and whether an independent, relevant source confirms it. If you still cannot verify it, wait rather than share it as fact.
Pause: urgency is not evidence
A message that feels urgent, surprising, or emotionally charged is a reason to slow down, not proof that it is accurate. The World Health Organization recommends pausing to consider who authored information and what its source is; Australia’s communications regulator advises checking official sources or fact-checking services and not sharing when doubt remains. Check the source and organiser
Who is organising the event?
Look for a named organiser that can be contacted or checked: for example, a local council, community group, venue, or recognized organization. Follow the notice to that organizer’s own website or account, rather than relying on a forwarded screenshot or a repost. A logo, polished flyer, or large number of shares does not establish who created the information.
Is this the original notice?
Copies of one flyer are not independent confirmations. Trace the claim to its original source, then look for evidence from a separate source that has checked the details. The House of Commons Library’s guide to checking facts describes fact-checking as tracing claims to their original source or comparing them with other sources.

Check the exact date, place, and status
Compare the notice against the source that is responsible for the event or observance. Check each detail, not just the headline:
- Name: Is the event or holiday named accurately?
- Date and year: Does the notice refer to the current year? An old announcement may be recirculated without its original context.
- Time and location: Do the time, venue, and any local details match the organizer’s current information?
- Status: Has the event been postponed, changed, or cancelled?
- Publication context: When was the post or image first published, and does it actually describe this year’s event?

For an unfamiliar holiday, find a relevant authority
There is no single calendar or authority that can verify every holiday claim. The appropriate source depends on the particular tradition and community. Look for confirmation from a relevant cultural or religious institution, civic body, or local organization with a clear connection to the observance. Check that its description and date apply to the community and location named in the post; do not assume one institution speaks for everyone.

Look beyond the account making the claim
Search separately for the event name, organizer, date, and venue. A second page that simply copied the same announcement adds no independent evidence. Prefer a primary source or genuinely independent reporting, and check whether the source explains where its information came from.
Check a photo or video’s context
If the notice relies on an image, consider whether it could be old or from another place. Indiana’s Department of Homeland Security recommends reverse image searching as one way to check image context. Slovenia’s government guidance also emphasizes checking original dates and context. A matching image alone does not confirm that the event is happening now.

If you cannot confirm it, do not present it as fact
If the organizer, date, venue, or claimed observance remains unverified, wait for confirmation or do not share the claim. If you need to ask your community for help, make the uncertainty clear and avoid repeating unsupported specifics as established facts. A pause is safer than amplifying a notice that may be outdated, mislabelled, or wrong.
