Confirm the exact website address through a brand contact route you already trust before you shop. A copied logo, polished design, search result, social ad or HTTPS lock does not prove that a jewellery site is operated by the brand. Check the seller independently, read its terms and choose a payment method with a dispute process.
How to check whether a jewellery website is official
- Confirm the exact domain independently. Read the full web address carefully, including spelling and any extra words or characters. Check it against a brand website or contact route you already know is genuine, such as a previously verified account or established brand document. If a message might be real, the FTC advises contacting the company using a website or phone number known to be genuine—not details supplied only in the message or on the suspicious page. - Navigate to the brand yourself. If you arrived through an email, text, sponsored search result or social ad, open a fresh browser tab and reach the brand using a trusted route. Compare the address with the one in the promotion. Ads can impersonate real companies and lead to counterfeit goods, a different product or no delivery. FTC online shopping advice.
- Cross-check the seller’s identity and reputation. Search the exact seller name and website address with terms such as “review,” “complaint” and “scam.” Look at several independent sources rather than relying on testimonials or star ratings shown on the seller’s own website; reviews can be fake or manipulated. The FTC recommends checking reviews across a range of sites and searching for complaints.
- Read the offer and terms before paying. Check delivery timing, returns, refunds, return shipping and fees. A surprisingly low price for an expensive brand-name piece is a warning sign: the item could be counterfeit or stolen. It is a signal to investigate, not proof by itself.
- Understand what HTTPS does—and does not—tell you. HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the site. It does not verify the seller’s identity or establish that the site belongs to a jewellery brand; scam sites can use encryption too. FTC online shopping advice.
- Choose a payment method with a route to challenge the charge. Prefer a credit card when available. Do not proceed if the seller insists on gift cards, a wire transfer, a payment app or cryptocurrency; recovering money through these methods can be difficult. The FTC also recommends keeping purchase records.
- Save evidence of the transaction. Keep the seller’s name and address, item and order details, date and amount, advertised shipping promise, return policy, receipts, emails and payment records. These details can help if you need to raise a problem with the seller or payment provider.
How to assess a jewellery listing separately from the website
A genuine website and an authentic item are different questions. Even when a domain is confirmed, check what the listing says about precious-metal quality and purity and whether gemstones, diamonds or pearls are natural, manufactured or treated. Those descriptions help you assess the item; they do not establish who operates the website. The FTC’s online shopping guidance advises consumers to learn the terminology used for precious metals and gemstones.

When to stop, and what to do if you already paid
- Pause before entering payment details if you cannot independently confirm the domain, the seller’s identity is inconsistent, the terms are unclear or the seller demands a hard-to-recover payment method.
- If something goes wrong, contact the seller and your payment provider. Use the contact details from a verified source where possible, and give your payment provider the records you saved.
- For U.S. consumers, report suspected fraud to the FTC. The FTC’s shopping and phishing guidance is U.S.-specific; consumers elsewhere should use their own country’s consumer-protection and payment-dispute channels.
