To verify a business’s GST registration, use the official GST Portal’s public Search Taxpayer tool. Search by the GSTIN or UIN, then compare the returned name, address and registration status with the invoice or vendor details you were given. The basic lookup does not require signing in.

How to check a GSTIN on the official GST Portal

  1. Go to gst.gov.in and open Search Taxpayer.
  2. Select Search by GSTIN/UIN and enter the identifier. In the pre-login search, complete the displayed CAPTCHA and select Search.
  3. Review the taxpayer profile returned by the portal. The GST Portal manual describes this as a lookup available without logging in. GST Portal: Search Taxpayer manual

What to compare in the result

Use the profile to check whether the identifier returns a record and whether the record matches the business or supplier you are dealing with. The public result can include the GSTIN/UIN, legal name, trade name, effective registration date, constitution of business, principal place of business, cancellation date when applicable, and return-filing details. GST Portal: Search Taxpayer manual

  • Name: Compare the legal or trade name with the invoice, vendor onboarding record, or other business details supplied to you.
  • Address: Check whether the principal place of business is consistent with the information you have.
  • Status: Review the registration status and any cancellation information shown. The manual also notes that an auto-suspended status and its effective date may appear. GST Portal: Search Taxpayer manual
  • Filing details: Use the filing table and select a financial year to view the available return information. A return-filing-frequency view is also described in the manual. These are portal-reported filing details, not a complete audit of the supplier.

If the GSTIN returns no record, or the name, address, or status does not fit the details you received, pause the transaction or vendor setup and ask the business to clarify or correct the GSTIN information. GSTN describes the utility as a way to verify GSTIN authenticity, check handwritten invoices, avoid vendors using fake GSTINs, and help suppliers correct GSTIN reporting errors. GSTN Welcome Kit

What a GSTIN lookup can—and cannot—establish

A result from the GST Portal is evidence of the registration details shown by the system. It does not by itself establish that a business is trustworthy, that a particular invoice or transaction is genuine, or that the supplier has met every tax obligation. Treat filing information as one diligence check, and verify the transaction and supplier independently when the stakes warrant it.

The public lookup is not the same as the information visible after signing in. According to the GST Portal manual, logged-in users may see additional fields such as proprietor, director or promoter names, e-way bill history, annual aggregate turnover, and tax-payment information. Do not assume those fields are part of an anonymous GSTIN search. GST Portal: Search Taxpayer manual

How to find GST registrations associated with a PAN

The GST Portal also documents Search by PAN under Search Taxpayer. The function can show GST registrations available on the searched PAN. GSTN describes it in guidance for people seeking to identify and report registrations they believe were created through misuse of their PAN; it should not be treated as a route for third parties to obtain private taxpayer information. How a business can download its own registration certificate

  1. Sign in to the GST Portal using the business’s account.
  2. Open Services > User Services > View/Download Certificates.
  3. Choose the issued registration certificate to download it as a PDF. Certificates are listed in descending chronological order; if registration details have been amended, an updated or amended certificate is also displayed. Certificate retrieval is for the signed-in taxpayer’s own account. For checking another business’s GSTIN, use the public Search Taxpayer lookup instead.

Is a non-government GSTIN lookup useful?

IRIS IRP documents a secondary GSTIN-details tool that can return information such as trade name, legal name, address and PIN code. It says changes are reflected after they appear on the GST Portal. For the authoritative verification flow, use the GST Portal first; a secondary tool is an alternative interface, not a substitute for checking the official record. IRIS IRP: GSTIN details
