To check a company, first identify the exact legal or trade name, the service it claims to provide, and any registration number. Search that information in SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory, matching the result’s category and identity details. Then search SEBI’s Enforcement Orders database and read each underlying order, including its procedural type, findings, directions and later appeal or court history. Use SCORES only as supplementary complaint context: it is a grievance-facilitation platform, not the registration register or a complete disciplinary database.
What a SEBI check can—and cannot—tell you
SEBI registration is not a single company-wide status. SEBI regulates different types of market intermediaries, and a firm may appear in one category without being authorised for every service it advertises. A brokerage, investment adviser, research analyst, portfolio manager, registrar or other intermediary has a category-specific regulatory entry.
That makes the service claim your starting point. A company that sells software, education or an unregulated service may not be expected to appear in the intermediary directory at all. Conversely, a business soliciting money or investment decisions under a regulated label should be checked against the category it claims.
The check is an identity-and-authority exercise, not a general reputation score. A genuine registration can belong to a different group company, a genuine business can have an enforcement record, and a complaint can concern conduct that has not been adjudicated. Keep those questions separate throughout your review.

Three official record types answer different questions:

A name appearing in one source is therefore a lead for verification, not a verdict about the business. Save the page address and the date you checked it, because directory contents, complaint views and enforcement indexes can change.
Step 1: Record exactly what the company claims
Before searching, copy the details from the company’s website, agreement, invoice, email or sales message. Keep the original spelling and punctuation, then note plausible variants.

- Trade or brand name used with customers.
- Claimed SEBI registration number, if one is displayed.
- The regulated service being offered—for example, investment advice, research, broking or portfolio management.
- Registered office, website domain, telephone number and other identity particulars shown in the solicitation.
Also preserve the exact wording of the claim. “SEBI registered,” “SEBI approved,” and “associated with a SEBI-registered broker” can describe different situations. The directory check must be made against the entity that will sign the contract, receive funds or provide the service, not merely against a parent, affiliate or familiar logo.
Do not assume that a familiar brand name is the legal entity. A group can operate several companies, and an impostor can copy a genuine intermediary’s name. The identity comparison later in the process is what separates a genuine match from a misleading one.
Step 2: Search SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory
Search by member or trade name
- Open SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory.
- Choose the search for member name or trade name.
- Enter the exact legal name first. Search again using the trade name and reasonable spelling or punctuation variants.
- Review the category and all identity particulars returned for each result.
The directory lists multiple intermediary categories. A result is relevant only when its category matches the service the business is offering. For example, a registration in one intermediary class does not automatically authorise investment advice, portfolio management or another separate activity.
Do not stop at the first similarly named result. Compare every plausible result and eliminate entities by legal suffix, address, registration number and trade name. If the directory gives several records for related businesses, identify which one appears in your agreement and payment instructions.

Search by registration number
- Select the directory’s registration-number search.
- Enter the number exactly as supplied, including any letters, separators or leading zeroes.
- Compare the returned legal name, trade name, category and other particulars with the documents and contact details of the business approaching you.
A registration number that returns a different legal entity, category or spelling is a warning requiring clarification. Do not rely on a logo, a screenshot or a number printed in a presentation when the official record does not match. Ask the firm to explain any mismatch in writing and provide the contracting entity’s own number.
How to handle no result
A blank result is not proof of fraud and is not proof of clean conduct. First check whether you searched the legal entity rather than only a brand, whether the number was transcribed correctly, and whether the firm is claiming a service that actually falls within a SEBI intermediary category. Search known variants and review the category filters.
If the business is presenting itself as a SEBI-regulated intermediary and still cannot be matched after those checks, pause before sending money or sharing sensitive documents. Ask the firm for its exact legal name and registration number in writing. Treat an inability or refusal to provide them as a material risk signal, while keeping the conclusion limited to the fact that you could not verify the claimed registration.

Use identity particulars, not just a name match
Compare the complete entry with the solicitor:
- Legal name and trade name.
- Registration number.
- Intermediary category.
- Address and other listed particulars.
- The entity named in contracts, payment instructions and correspondence.
SEBI’s directory is the authoritative starting point for intermediary registration. A separate SCORES entity-status page notes that its identity data is collected from stock exchanges or the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, warns that inaccuracies may occur, and marks non-authenticated companies with an asterisk. That makes SCORES useful for a secondary identity check, not a replacement for the directory.
As a dated sense of scale, the directory displayed 4,998 registered stock brokers in the equity segment on October 12, 2026. That figure is only a category count on that date: it is not a count of unique firms across every SEBI class and says nothing about the status of the company you are checking.
Step 3: Search SEBI’s Enforcement Orders
Run broad searches first
- Open SEBI’s Enforcement Orders search interface.
- Search the exact legal entity name in the entity-name field.
- Repeat with the trade name, former name and sensible spelling variants.
- Use title and keyword searches when the entity-name search is incomplete—for example, where a group company, director or related party is named in the order.
- Open every potentially relevant result instead of relying on the result headline or search snippet.
The enforcement interface supports title, keyword and entity-name searches. Search variations matter because an order may identify a subsidiary, former name, director or other related party rather than the brand used in a sales conversation. A result associated with a person or affiliate is a reason to read the document, not automatic proof that the contracting company was the respondent.
A search result means SEBI has published a document associated with that search term; it does not, by itself, establish that the entity was found liable. Check the named parties and the operative paragraphs before drawing any conclusion.
Distinguish the order types
SEBI’s enforcement index includes different procedural records, including adjudicating-officer orders, Chairperson or Member orders, settlement orders, Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) orders and court orders. They are not interchangeable.

Read the document, not only the index
For each relevant order, record:
- The exact entity and individuals named.
- The document date.
- The order type.
- The conduct alleged, admitted or established, using the order’s own wording.
- Any monetary penalty, disgorgement, restraint, suspension, directions or other operative relief.
- Whether the document says it is interim, final, consent-based, settled or otherwise limited.
Read the reasoning as well as the final directions. The background may describe allegations, while the concluding paragraphs state what SEBI actually ordered. A precise report might say that SEBI published an adjudicating-officer order dated on a particular day imposing the penalty stated in that document. It should not compress every record into “SEBI found the company guilty,” especially where the document is a settlement, an appeal or a procedural direction.
Step 4: Check what happened after an order
Enforcement search results are a moving list. An order can be followed by an appeal, a stay, a modification, a reversal, a settlement or another order. Before describing an old action as currently operative, search later SEBI records and relevant SAT or court records for the same entity and proceeding.
Keep the procedural timeline separate:
- Identify the original SEBI order and its date.
- Look for a later appellate or court record naming the same party or proceeding.
- Check whether the later document changes, stays, confirms or otherwise addresses the original directions.
- State the latest status you can support from the dated documents, rather than assuming the first order is the final word.
Match the case number, party names and dates where available. A similarly titled matter may involve a different entity. If no later record is found, say only that you found no later record in the searches performed; do not convert that limited result into a claim that no appeal or stay exists.
The general directory and index cannot establish the current status of an unnamed company’s case. That conclusion requires a company-specific search using its exact identity.

SEBI describes SCORES as “an online grievance redressal facilitation platform provided by SEBI.” It covers grievances concerning listed companies, SEBI-registered intermediaries and market infrastructure institutions. Its guidance asks investors to approach the company or intermediary first.

What a SCORES record means
A complaint is an investor’s grievance within the platform’s process, not a regulatory finding that the allegation is true. Conversely, no visible complaint does not prove that an entity has no enforcement history or that no investor has complained elsewhere.
SCORES’ entity-status data carries an explicit accuracy warning because information is collected from stock exchanges or the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. An asterisk identifies non-authenticated companies in that display. Use the page to help identify an entity and understand complaint handling, then verify registration in the Recognised Intermediaries directory and disciplinary action in the Enforcement Orders records.
Current and legacy SCORES access
The current SCORES notice says the old site stopped accepting new complaints on March 28, 2024. Some complaints that were pending on that date remain viewable in the old system. Do not interpret the legacy site’s inability to accept a new complaint as evidence that no grievance process exists, and do not treat an old visible complaint as a current enforcement order.
Limits on complaints
SCORES’ FAQ says the platform cannot consider, among other cases, anonymous complaints, incomplete or unspecified complaints and unsupported allegations. Those limits are another reason not to treat the platform as an exhaustive database of misconduct. A complaint that falls outside the platform’s scope may never appear there, regardless of its merits.
How to write a defensible verification result
When you finish the searches, separate three conclusions instead of issuing one broad label:
- Registration: state whether the exact entity appears in the relevant category, with its listed registration details.
- Enforcement: list each relevant dated order, its type and operative result, then note any later appellate or court development you verified.
- Complaints: describe SCORES information as grievance context and identify its scope and data caveat.
Use qualified language when the evidence is limited: “I could not match the claimed registration in the directory after checking the supplied legal name, trade name and number” is accurate. “The company is fraudulent” is a much broader conclusion that these searches alone do not establish.
For your records, retain the URL, access date, search term, result category, registration number and downloaded order or complaint reference. Note whether a page was a current or legacy portal. This makes a later update possible without confusing a changed portal display with a changed legal outcome.
Common mistakes and fixes
Searching only the brand name
Problem: the legal entity is registered under another name, or an unrelated business shares the brand.
Fix: obtain the legal name from the contract or invoice, search it and compare the complete particulars.
Matching a number without checking the category
Problem: a genuine registration is treated as authorisation for a different service.

Fix: match the directory category to the exact activity being offered.

Confusing a parent, affiliate or individual with the contracting company
Problem: an order or registration for a related party is reported as though it belonged to the entity taking your money.
Fix: compare the exact named party, legal suffix, address and contract entity in every record.
Treating a search snippet as the outcome
Problem: a headline omits the order’s procedural posture or later history.
Fix: open the dated document, record its directions and search for later appeals, stays or court records.

Calling every order a conviction
Problem: settlement, appellate and court records are described as though they were the same adjudication.
Fix: name the order type and report only the result the document states.
Assuming no search result means a clean record
Problem: a missed spelling variant, former name or related-party record creates false reassurance.
Fix: repeat searches with legal, trade and former names, then state the limits of the search you actually completed.

Fix: use SCORES for grievance-process context and rely on the registration directory and enforcement documents for their respective questions.
What the published directory count means

A practical decision rule
Proceed only after the business identity, claimed service and directory category line up. Treat enforcement records according to their exact procedural status and verify later developments before describing an action as current. Keep complaint information in its proper SCORES context. If the identity cannot be matched or the firm cannot explain a category mismatch, stop the verification process rather than relying on branding, screenshots or an unsupported assurance.

Does no result in SEBI’s directory prove that a company is fraudulent?
No. Recheck the legal name, trade name, number and claimed service. A company may not be a SEBI intermediary, but an entity claiming regulated status that cannot be matched should be treated cautiously until its identity and category are clarified.
What does a SCORES complaint mean?
It means an investor grievance appears within SEBI’s facilitation process. It does not establish that the allegation is true, and the absence of a visible complaint does not prove that the company has no complaints or enforcement history.
