To watch a YouTube video from your iPhone on a TV, open the video in the YouTube app, tap the Cast icon, then choose your TV or streaming device. For normal Cast discovery, both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi, and YouTube needs Local Network permission on iOS 14 or later. If they are on different networks, link the TV with a code instead.
Choose a connection method

YouTube says its app is already available on most smart TVs, game consoles, and streaming devices; Apple TV also has an App Store installation path. You may be able to use a device you already own, so check whether your TV or streaming device supports YouTube before considering additional hardware. YouTube’s device download guidance lists its general options.

Cast to a TV on the same Wi-Fi
- Connect your iPhone and your TV or streaming device to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the YouTube app on the TV or streaming device.
- Open the YouTube app on your iPhone and play the video.
- Tap the Cast icon in the video player.
- Select your TV or streaming device from the list.
You can also start from the YouTube app’s home page: tap the three-dot menu beside a video’s title, choose Play on different device, then select the target. Casting from YouTube in a mobile browser is not supported.

On iOS 14 or later, YouTube needs Local Network access to discover nearby streaming devices. If access is off, Cast discovery will not work. To enable it, open Settings on your iPhone, select YouTube, and turn on Local Network. You can also start casting in YouTube and follow its permission prompt. Each YouTube app you use for casting needs its own permission.

Link a TV with a code when the devices use different Wi-Fi
- On the TV or streaming device, open YouTube, go to Settings, select Add a device, and note the numeric blue code.
- On your iPhone, open YouTube and tap Cast.
- Tap Add a device, enter the code, and tap Link.
- Select the linked TV or streaming device to start watching.
After linking, reconnect to a saved TV from the iPhone by opening YouTube and going to Profile picture > Settings > General > Watch on TV, then tapping LINK beside the TV.
Use your iPhone while YouTube plays on the TV
Your iPhone remains a companion during TV playback. You can engage with the video, read its description, browse or queue other videos without interrupting what is currently playing. YouTube also lets you move a video to another TV or streaming device.

To use your iPhone as a remote, tap Cast > Remote. Most TV remotes are supported. If the remote feature does not work with your TV, check the TV manual for Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) support and enable CEC if the TV offers it.
Fix common “TV not found” and casting problems
- The TV does not appear in Cast: For ordinary casting, confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi. On iOS 14 or later, also check Settings > YouTube > Local Network.
- The devices are on different networks: Use the TV-code linking steps rather than expecting ordinary Cast discovery to find the TV.
- You see a casting error with a YouTube Kids profile: YouTube warns that a YouTube Kids profile on a TV, streaming device, or game console may cause casting errors. Switch to a different profile.
- You use a supervised account: Some YouTube features may be unavailable with supervised accounts.

Disconnect or remove a linked TV
To stop the active connection, tap Cast on the iPhone and choose Disconnect. To remove code-linked devices, go to Profile picture > Settings > General > Watch on TV > Delete Devices. This removes all linked devices, not just one selected TV.
