If you mean using your phone to unlock or sign in to a Windows 10 PC, Microsoft’s current instructions do not describe Phone Link as a lock-screen sign-in method. Phone Link pairs a phone with your PC so you can use supported phone features from Windows. For signing in to Windows itself, Microsoft documents passwords, PINs, Windows Hello biometrics, and registered security keys.
What “use your phone to log into Windows 10” can mean
There are two different tasks that are easy to confuse:
- Connect a phone to your PC: Use Microsoft Phone Link to access supported phone features on the computer. Setup pairs the devices; it does not make the phone a Windows lock-screen authenticator. Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup describes pairing and permissions.
- Sign in to the PC: Use a Windows sign-in method such as a password, PIN, Windows Hello face or fingerprint, or a registered security key. Microsoft’s Windows account access guidance lists password, PIN, and biometric sign-in.
The steps below cover both meanings so you can choose the one you need.
Link an Android phone to a Windows 10 PC
Check compatibility
Microsoft’s Phone Link support page lists these requirements for Android: a PC running Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, an Android device running Android 10 or later, and both devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Microsoft recommends using the latest Windows version for the best experience. Phone Link does not support work or school accounts, and the page also says it does not currently support multiple Android profiles. See Microsoft’s requirements.

Pair the devices
- On the PC, open Phone Link.
- On the Android phone, install or open Link to Windows and sign in with the same Microsoft account used in Phone Link.
- In Phone Link, choose the option to pair using a QR code. Scan the code with Link to Windows on the phone. Microsoft also provides a manual pairing option using a code.
- Follow the prompts on both devices and allow the permissions you want Phone Link to use.
After pairing, Phone Link can show supported features such as messages, calls, photos, notifications, and apps. What is available depends on the device and the permissions you grant; pairing alone does not enable every feature.
Link an iPhone to a Windows 10 PC
Check compatibility and privacy
Microsoft lists Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or later, Bluetooth Low Energy support on the PC, and iOS 16 or later as requirements for iPhone pairing. Some features require multiple permissions. Microsoft warns that granting message access can expose sensitive information, including two-factor-authentication SMS messages, in Phone Link. Review the requested access before allowing it. Microsoft’s Phone Link setup page explains the requirements and permissions.

Pair the iPhone
- Open Phone Link on the PC and choose iPhone.
- Follow the pairing prompts and scan the displayed QR code using the iPhone camera.
- Complete Bluetooth pairing on both devices, then approve the requested permissions on the iPhone.
This connects the phone to Phone Link; it does not turn the iPhone into a Windows 10 lock-screen sign-in method.

Sign in to Windows 10 with Windows Hello instead
For a Microsoft account on Windows 10, Microsoft lets you require Windows Hello sign-in instead of using the account password on that device. This is a Windows sign-in setting, not a Phone Link feature.

- On the PC, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Under the Microsoft account section, turn on Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts.
- At the next sign-in, use the Windows Hello method configured on the PC: face, fingerprint, or PIN.
Microsoft says that after enabling this setting, the password option is no longer available for that device account; only Windows Hello face, fingerprint, or PIN gestures are offered. The setting is available when you use a Microsoft account. See Microsoft’s passwordless Windows instructions.
Use a security key as another Windows sign-in option
Microsoft also documents signing in at the Windows 10 lock screen with a registered security key. Choose the security-key sign-in option, insert the key, and enter its PIN. This is a physical alternative to password or Windows Hello sign-in—not a way to log in with a phone. Microsoft’s pages explain security-key sign-in and security-key setup.

Don’t confuse Windows 10 phone account sync with PC sign-in
Microsoft has a legacy guide for adding a Microsoft account to a Windows 10 phone so it can sync with a PC. Its phone path is App list > Settings > Accounts > Email & app accounts > Add a Microsoft account. That process sets up the account on the phone; it does not make the phone an authenticator for signing in to a Windows 10 PC.
