When Windows 11 feels slow, open Task Manager and watch the Processes tab while the problem is happening. Sorting by CPU, Memory, Disk, or Network quickly shows which familiar app is consuming resources; the separate Startup apps tab is the right place when the delay occurs mainly after sign-in.
Start with the Processes tab during the slowdown
Task Manager is a built-in monitor, not a benchmark. It reports what processes are using right now, so a screenshot taken after the computer recovers may miss the cause. Microsoft’s performance guidance says that monitoring CPU, memory, and disk usage can help identify processes that may be slowing a PC. Read the figures while you can feel the lag, then compare them with what you were doing at that moment. Microsoft Support explains this monitoring approach.
- Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or right-click the Start button and choose Task Manager.
- Choose Processes. If the compact view is shown, select More details first. The list includes the current CPU, Memory, Disk, and Network columns.
- Sort the list. Select a column heading once to put the largest current users at the top. Select it again to reverse the order. Check each relevant column instead of assuming the first item in one column explains every kind of slowness.
- Watch while reproducing the problem. Note the app at the top, what you were doing, and whether its use stays high or falls immediately. A demanding task can legitimately produce a high reading; a short spike is different from sustained pressure.
- Cross-check the system view. Open Performance for overall CPU, memory, disk, Wi-Fi, and GPU activity. This tells you whether the computer as a whole is under pressure and whether the app-level reading matches the system-level picture. Microsoft documents these views in its Windows system-configuration guidance: System configuration tools in Windows.
Leave Task Manager open for several minutes if the slowdown is intermittent. Watch whether the same process rises each time, whether several processes rise together, and whether the graphs return to normal when the action ends. Writing down the app name and the time of each spike gives you a more reliable pattern than trying to remember a single number.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A high number is evidence of activity, not proof that one app is the sole cause. Compare the process list with the time of the slowdown and with the type of work being performed before taking action.

What each resource column tells you
Use the column that matches the symptom. The same app may be responsible for different resources at different times, and a high reading can be normal for a task that you intentionally started.
| Column or view | What it measures | How to use the clue |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Current processor load attributed to processes. | Sort by CPU during the lag. Check whether the same familiar app remains near the top rather than reacting to a momentary spike. |
| Memory | Current memory used by processes. | A large share is a clue that memory pressure may be involved, but one reading cannot establish that the installed memory is insufficient. |
| Disk | Current disk activity. | High activity can accompany a sluggish interface. It does not, by itself, prove that a drive is failing or justify buying an SSD. |
| Network | Data transfer attributed to processes. | A program transferring data may explain network-related sluggishness even when local CPU use is modest. |
| Performance | System-level CPU, memory, disk, Wi-Fi, and GPU activity. | Use the graphs to see whether the pressure is system-wide or limited to one process. |
CPU: distinguish work from a runaway process
Video encoding, compiling, rendering, and other intensive jobs can use substantial CPU by design. If the computer responds normally when the job finishes, the high reading describes expected work rather than a fault. If an app continues consuming CPU after its task should be complete, note its name and how long the use persists. That pattern is a stronger reason to close the app, update it, or investigate its own settings than a single peak.
Compare CPU use with the app’s visible state. A browser tab playing video or a file being converted can explain a busy processor; an idle window that remains at the top through repeated checks deserves closer attention. Do not assume that the first process listed is harmful simply because it is doing the most work at that instant.
Memory: treat the percentage as a clue, not a diagnosis
Memory use reflects all open programs and background processes. Closing an unneeded, recognized app can reduce pressure, but Task Manager alone cannot tell you that a hardware upgrade is required. Look for a repeatable relationship between the slowdown and a particular app or group of apps. If the list changes after you close one, observe whether the computer actually becomes responsive before drawing a conclusion.
Check whether the slowdown appears only when several large programs are open. A single high-memory entry may be normal for the work you chose, while many moderate entries can create the pressure. Record what was open before closing anything so you can reproduce the situation and verify whether the change helped.
Disk: activity is not the same as drive health
A busy disk can make windows open slowly or delay an app’s response. Task Manager is showing activity, not testing the physical condition of the drive. Do not infer a failing drive or an automatic need for an SSD from the percentage alone. First identify which process is reading or writing during the slowdown and whether the activity stops when that work ends.

Network: separate transfer delays from local processing
Sorting by Network can reveal a process that is sending or receiving data. That may account for a slow online action while CPU, memory, and disk remain ordinary. Conversely, a network-heavy process does not automatically explain a generally slow desktop; use the Performance graphs and the timing of the symptom to separate those cases.

For a useful comparison, check the same view before, during, and after the slowdown. First note the top few entries when the PC feels normal. Reproduce the action that causes the lag, then sort by the resource that appears related. Finally, wait for the operation to finish and see whether the values fall. This three-point check helps distinguish a process that causes the pressure from one that merely reacts to it.
Change one thing at a time whenever possible. If you close three programs or disable several startup entries together, you may improve the symptom without learning which change mattered. A short note containing the app name, resource column, approximate duration, and result after closing it can make recurring troubleshooting much easier.
What you can safely close
End a process only when you recognize the app and know you are not using it. Save work first, then select the app in Processes and choose End task. Closing an ordinary program can release its CPU, memory, disk, or network activity, but it can also discard unsaved changes or interrupt an operation.
- Close a familiar app that is not needed and is persistently consuming the resource associated with the slowdown.
- Keep a demanding app open when its high use is the work you intentionally started; wait for the operation to finish if possible.
- Do not end an unknown Windows process merely because its number is high. A system process may be required for Windows or another program, and stopping it can cause instability or data loss.
- If ending a known app does not help, reopen it only after noting whether the symptom returns. That observation is more useful than repeatedly ending random processes.
Task Manager readings locate pressure; they do not prove that the selected app is the only cause. If several processes rise together, use the Performance tab to determine whether the bottleneck is broader than one application.
If the PC is slow after sign-in, inspect Startup apps
A computer that is responsive after a few minutes but slow immediately after signing in has a different investigation path. In Task Manager, open Startup apps. This list shows enabled programs that launch with Windows and a startup-impact label. Microsoft also provides the same control in Settings > Apps > Startup. The labels describe measured startup activity, not the overall health of the PC. See Microsoft’s Configure Startup applications in Windows instructions.

- Select Startup apps in Task Manager.
- Review the Status and Startup impact columns. Focus first on enabled apps with higher impact that you recognize.
- Select a program and choose Disable only when you do not need it to launch automatically. Disabling startup does not uninstall the app; it prevents automatic launch.
- Restart or sign out and observe the next sign-in and normal work. Change one or a small, clearly related group at a time so you can tell what helped.
- If the program is needed at startup, leave it enabled and investigate the app itself rather than disabling it blindly.
Microsoft’s startup-impact definitions
Microsoft defines these labels using the app’s measured total CPU and disk use during startup. The figures below are Microsoft’s published definitions; they are not universal thresholds for every kind of slowdown.
| Label | Microsoft’s definition | What it means for your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Low Impact | Total CPU use under 300 milliseconds and total disk use under 292 kilobytes. | Lower measured effect on startup; still disable it if you do not need automatic launch. |
| Medium Impact | CPU use under 1 second but above 300 milliseconds, or disk use under 3 megabytes but above 292 kilobytes. | A possible contributor to sign-in delay, especially when several such apps start together. |
| High Impact | CPU use over 1 second or disk use over 3 megabytes. | Prioritize a recognized app here when the problem is concentrated at sign-in. |
| Not Measured | The app is enabled, but no impact measurement is available. | The absence of a measurement is not evidence that the app is harmless or harmful; decide based on whether you recognize and need it. |
| None | The startup app is disabled. | It is not currently launching through this startup list. |
The thresholds measure startup behavior only. A program marked Low Impact can still use substantial CPU later during normal use, and a Not Measured item can still deserve review if you do not recognize it. Treat the label as a way to prioritize testing, not as a score for the entire computer.
Match the investigation to the symptom
| What you notice | First place to look | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The desktop becomes slow while you are working. | Processes, sorted by CPU, Memory, Disk, or Network while the lag is present. | This connects current activity with the moment the symptom occurs. |
| Windows is slow mainly immediately after sign-in. | Startup apps and their impact labels. | These entries affect the boot/sign-in experience rather than every later slowdown. |
| One brief spike appears and then disappears. | Observe again while reproducing the task. | A short, legitimate burst does not establish a persistent problem. |
| The same resource stays high repeatedly. | Performance plus the corresponding process column. | Repeated pressure may indicate a broader software or system issue that needs more troubleshooting. |
This timing-and-persistence test prevents a common mistake: disabling a startup app to fix a slowdown that actually occurs hours later, or ending an active work process because it briefly reached the top of the CPU list.

Optional: use Efficiency mode carefully
Task Manager can display a green double-leaf icon for Efficiency mode. Microsoft says the mode limits resources used by a process or process group when high CPU use is detected. To try it, select an eligible process in Task Manager and use the Efficiency mode command shown for that process. It is an optional experiment, not a replacement for identifying why the process is busy.
Efficiency mode can cause instability for certain processes. If the app becomes unreliable, behaves unexpectedly, or loses needed responsiveness, turn the mode off for that process and reassess. Do not confuse this Windows Task Manager feature with Microsoft Edge’s separate energy-saving features; Edge documents those independently at Learn about performance features in Microsoft Edge.
Escalate only when the basic evidence is persistent
Use a clean boot for a recurring, unexplained startup problem
If the PC repeatedly starts slowly and disabling recognizable startup apps does not identify the cause, a clean boot can isolate whether a startup app or service is involved. Microsoft’s procedure disables services and startup items and then restarts Windows. Because that can temporarily remove functionality, it is an advanced troubleshooting step rather than the first response to every slow PC. Follow the steps in Microsoft’s clean-boot guide, test the symptom, and restore normal startup after troubleshooting.

Do not jump from a high reading to a hardware purchase
Persistent high CPU, memory, or disk readings can be signs that a PC needs broader attention. Microsoft lists such persistent pressure among possible signs that a computer may be due for replacement, while also recommending software troubleshooting. The readings do not identify a particular upgrade by themselves: they cannot establish that you need more RAM, an SSD, a cooling product, or a repair tool. First document which resource stays high, which process is involved, when the symptom occurs, and whether closing or disabling a recognized app changes it. Review Microsoft’s broader guidance in How to know it’s time for a new PC.

Task Manager is strong at answering, “What is using resources right now?” It can connect an active app with CPU, memory, disk, or network pressure, show system-wide graphs, and prioritize programs that affect sign-in. It is not a complete diagnosis of software bugs, drive health, malware, thermal problems, or hardware adequacy. A high value can be legitimate, a low value can miss a problem that has already ended, and an impact label applies to startup measurement rather than all-day behavior.
Use the simplest safe sequence: observe the lag, sort the matching resource, identify a familiar process, close it only if it is not needed, and verify whether the symptom changes. For sign-in delays, review Startup apps separately and test one recognized change at a time. If high readings persist across repeated observations or no process explains the behavior, move to broader Windows troubleshooting instead of assuming Task Manager has proved a specific upgrade is necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I see which app is using the most CPU or memory?
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, choose Processes, and select the CPU or Memory column heading to sort from highest to lowest. Check the list while the slowdown is happening, then see whether the same familiar app remains high rather than reacting to a brief spike.
What should I do if my PC is slow only after signing in?
Open Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, review enabled programs and their Startup impact labels, and disable only recognized apps you do not need to launch automatically. Restart or sign out, then check whether the next sign-in improves. Startup labels describe sign-in activity, not all later performance.
Recommended Free Tools
Is it safe to end a process with high CPU use?
Only end a process when you recognize the app, have saved your work, and are not using it. Do not stop an unknown Windows process solely because its number is high; it may be required by Windows or another program and stopping it can cause instability or data loss.

What do Low, Medium, and High startup impact mean?
Microsoft defines Low Impact as total CPU under 300 milliseconds and disk under 292 kilobytes. Medium is CPU under 1 second but above 300 milliseconds, or disk under 3 megabytes but above 292 kilobytes. High is CPU over 1 second or disk over 3 megabytes. These are startup measurements only.
Should I turn on Efficiency mode for a busy app?
Efficiency mode is optional. Task Manager may show a green double-leaf icon and offer the mode for a process using substantial CPU. It limits resources, but Microsoft warns it can cause instability for some processes. Turn it off if the app becomes unreliable, and do not confuse it with Edge’s separate energy-saving feature.
When should I try a clean boot?
Use a clean boot only for a recurring, unexplained startup problem after ordinary Startup apps checks have not identified the cause. Microsoft’s procedure disables services and startup items and restarts Windows, which can temporarily remove functionality. Restore normal startup after testing.
Does a high disk or memory reading prove I need an upgrade?
No. Task Manager identifies current activity but does not prove that a drive is failing or that you need more RAM, an SSD, cooling equipment, or a replacement PC. Document persistent readings and the related process first, then pursue broader troubleshooting.
The Bottom Line
Use Task Manager as an observation tool: check Processes during the lag, match the symptom to CPU, memory, disk, or network, and close only familiar apps you do not need. For sign-in delays, test Startup apps separately. Persistent pressure warrants broader Windows troubleshooting, but a high reading alone does not prove a specific hardware upgrade is necessary.
