To use walkie-talkies, turn on both radios, set them to the same channel, and match or disable any CTCSS/DCS code on both. Press and hold push-to-talk (PTT) while speaking, then release it to listen. Take turns: radios on a shared channel cannot carry both sides of a conversation at once.
Set up both radios
- Check the radio and its service. Find the model and service on the radio or in its manual, and check which channels and rules apply. Controls and permissions vary by model and radio service. Motorola’s Talkabout support page lets you select a series to find its manual.
- Turn on the radios and set volume. On the Midland T71/T75, turn the power/volume knob clockwise to switch on and adjust volume. The control may differ on other models; use the relevant manual for its exact steps.
- Choose the same channel. Set both radios to one channel, and check for existing traffic before you start speaking. There is no universally best channel or general-purpose meaning for ordinary numbered channels.
- Match the code or turn it off on both. If either radio uses a CTCSS or DCS code, set both radios to the same code, or disable the code on both. These settings can filter which incoming transmissions open the speaker; they do not make a conversation confidential.
For the Midland T71/T75 family, the 2025 guide lists 36 GMRS/FRS channels, 121 privacy codes (38 CTCSS and 83 DCS), and 10 NOAA weather channels. Those are specifications for that product family, not universal counts for walkie-talkies.
Talk and listen with push-to-talk
- Hold down the PTT button and wait a brief moment before speaking.
- Speak clearly at a steady, ordinary volume, then release PTT when you have finished. The Midland guide describes the controls as “Hold PTT to talk” and “Release to listen.”
- Listen for the reply. On the cited Midland guide, the TX icon indicates transmission and RX indicates reception. Do not keep PTT held while expecting to hear the other radio.
- Take turns and leave a short pause between transmissions so the other person can respond.
Use clear, considerate radio etiquette
- Listen briefly before transmitting so you do not interrupt someone already using the channel.
- Say who you are calling, then identify yourself if the group needs that context. Keep each transmission short and clear.
- Use plain language, speak at a normal volume, and avoid holding the microphone directly against your mouth.
- Do not monopolize the channel with unnecessary chatter; pause between messages for replies or urgent traffic.
- Give emergency communications priority. U.S. GMRS rules state: “Operators of GMRS stations must, at all times and on all channels, give priority to emergency communications.”
- Do not use a privacy-code setting as a reason to share sensitive personal information.
Understand channels and licensing in the United States
U.S. FRS and GMRS are separate personal radio services. Federal rules describe FRS as primarily for short-distance two-way voice communications between individuals. FRS units normally communicate with other FRS units and may also communicate with GMRS stations. GMRS rules permit plain-language voice communications for personal or business activities and give emergency communications priority on all channels.

Licensing depends on the service and equipment, so identify what your radio is authorized to use and check current FCC requirements before transmitting. The Midland T71/T75 guide says an FCC license is required for that model’s GMRS channels 1–7 and 15–22; do not apply that model-specific note to every radio or configuration. Rules differ outside the United States.

What “privacy codes” do—and do not do
CTCSS and DCS codes are tone or digital-code settings used to filter incoming transmissions through a radio’s speaker. The Midland guide calls its menu option “Privacy Code,” but the label does not mean the conversation is encrypted or confidential. The cited material does not establish that these codes prevent other listeners from receiving a transmission.
How far do walkie-talkies reach?
There is no single reliable distance for all walkie-talkies. Performance depends on the radio, terrain, obstructions, antenna position, interference, battery condition, and permitted power settings. The Midland T71/T75 guide says optimal range is in open areas or over water and recommends high power and fully charged batteries for best performance. Treat advertised model-specific distances as conditions-dependent claims, not guaranteed range.

Troubleshoot when you cannot hear the other radio
- Confirm both radios are switched on and set to an audible volume.
- Check that both radios are on the same channel.
- Match the CTCSS/DCS code on both radios, or disable it on both.
- Check that the batteries are charged.
- Move within workable range and, if possible, reduce obstructions or interference.
The Midland T71/T75 troubleshooting table specifically recommends checking that channel and code settings match and verifying range when there is no reception.
Choosing radios for a beginner setup
If you do not own radios yet, an “FRS walkie-talkie two-pack” is a product category to consider for a basic U.S. setup, not a tested recommendation. Check the service and licensing obligations, compatibility with the other user’s radio, ease of channel and code controls, battery and charging type, durability or weather resistance, and accessory connector compatibility. Headsets, replacement batteries, and chargers must be compatible with the exact radio model; the Midland T71/T75 guide lists headsets and rechargeable packs for that family.
