Use VS Code’s Chat view to turn a coding request into a reviewed plan, then use the Agents window as a task board for supervising one or more agent sessions. A reliable operating loop is Plan → Implement → Verify → Review: describe the outcome and constraints, answer the agent’s questions, inspect its proposed files and tests, approve an implementation path, and then review the evidence and diff before you finish.
What VS Code’s AI agent task board does
VS Code provides two related surfaces for agent work. The Chat view is the focused workspace beside your editor. It is useful when you are actively editing, debugging, or testing one project and need the conversation and code context together. The Agents window is the monitoring board for delegated work. It brings sessions from several projects into one interface so you can assign work, select a session, inspect its conversation, and review files, changes, validation, and available Git actions.
The board is not a replacement for code review. It gives you a central place to see what an agent did and what evidence it produced. You still decide whether the plan fits the project, whether tool actions should be allowed, whether tests are meaningful, and whether the final diff is safe to merge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the right surface before you start
| Surface | Best use | What you can monitor | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat view | Frequent editing, debugging, or testing in one project | Conversation, code context, and immediate changes | It is less suited to a portfolio-style view across projects |
| Agents window | Assigning and monitoring sessions across projects | Sessions, chat, files, changes, validation, and Git actions | Some features and harnesses are experimental or limited |
A practical pattern is to begin a task in Chat, create and review its plan there, and then use the Agents window when you need to watch several sessions or projects. Return to the focused Chat view when a single implementation needs close, interactive attention.

Plan a coding task in Chat
Planning is the point at which you define what “done” means before an agent changes files. VS Code’s planning guidance describes the purpose as clarifying requirements, comparing approaches, and identifying risks before implementation.
- Open the project in VS Code. Make sure the workspace contains the code, configuration, and tests the agent will need. If you have multiple repositories open, confirm that the active workspace is the one you intend to change.
- Open Chat. Choose Copilot as the session target when that is the session you want to use. The exact available targets depend on your sign-in and configured providers.
- Enter
/planfollowed by the request. You can also choose Plan from the agent-mode picker. In a Copilot session, planning may be invoked automatically when you explicitly ask for a plan, but using/planmakes the intent unambiguous. - State the outcome, constraints, and verification criteria. Tell the agent what behavior should exist, what it must not change, project conventions it must follow, and how success will be checked.
A request that gives only a feature name leaves important decisions implicit. A stronger planning prompt identifies the user-visible result, boundaries, and evidence you expect:
/plan Add CSV export to the existing reports screen. Reuse the current authorization and date-filter services, do not change the database schema, preserve the existing JSON endpoint, and add automated coverage for empty, single-row, and multi-row exports. Verify with the relevant unit tests, the API test suite, and a manual browser check of the download filename.
You do not need to prescribe every file. The agent should investigate the project and propose where the change belongs. Your job is to make the desired result and limits testable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Answer the planning agent’s questions
The Plan agent researches the workspace before presenting its proposal. It may ask clarifying questions about ambiguous requirements, compatibility, error handling, or project conventions. Treat those questions as design decisions, not interruptions.
- Resolve assumptions. If the request could mean two different behaviors, choose one explicitly. For example, say whether an export should use the current filter or all records.
- Explain priorities. Tell the agent whether backward compatibility, performance, minimal scope, or a particular user experience is most important when trade-offs exist.
- Point to authoritative project patterns. Mention an existing component, service, test fixture, or command that the change should follow rather than asking for a new convention.
- Ask for trade-offs when the choice matters. Request a comparison of alternatives if the agent proposes a migration, dependency, broad refactor, or behavior change.
- Supply missing verification details. If the project has a required linter, type checker, integration suite, or manual flow, name it so the plan includes it.
Do not approve a plan that relies on an unanswered product decision. The implementation can be technically coherent and still deliver the wrong behavior if the requirement remains ambiguous.
Review the plan before allowing implementation
The agent produces a plan describing implementation steps, relevant files, decisions, dependencies, and verification steps. Review the plan card before selecting an implementation action.
Check the proposed scope
- Does the plan touch the smallest reasonable set of files?
- Does it identify the actual entry points, data flow, and tests rather than generic folders?
- Does it preserve interfaces or configuration that the request says must remain stable?
- Are generated files, migrations, dependency changes, or broad refactors justified?
Check project fit
- Does the plan follow the repository’s existing architecture and naming conventions?
- Does it reuse existing utilities and validation instead of introducing parallel implementations?
- Does it account for permission, error, empty-data, and compatibility cases that the project already handles elsewhere?
Check verification
- Are the proposed tests tied to the requested behavior?
- Does the plan include the project’s relevant unit, integration, end-to-end, lint, or type checks?
- Is there a manual check for behavior automated tests cannot prove, such as a download, visual state, or deployment configuration?
- Will the results distinguish a passing test from a test that never ran or was skipped?
Use the plan-review card to submit overall feedback or inline comments. Review the updated plan after the agent responds; do not assume that a clarification automatically changed every dependent step.

Understand the available approval actions
Depending on the session, the card can offer Implement Plan, Approve Plan Only, Implement with Autopilot, or Reject. These choices have different consequences:
- Implement Plan moves from the reviewed design into the implementation workflow.
- Approve Plan Only records that the plan is acceptable without starting implementation, useful when another person or process will execute it.
- Implement with Autopilot delegates more of the execution sequence, so it requires a higher level of confidence in scope, permissions, and verification.
- Reject stops the proposal when the requirement, scope, or approach is not acceptable.
Approval of the plan and approval of individual tool actions are separate decisions. A plan can be approved while you still review or deny file edits, terminal commands, or other actions as they occur.
Open the Agents window
Open the monitoring board from the title bar with Open in Agents, run the Chat: Open Agents window command, or launch it with:
code --agents
The browser entry point is https://insiders.vscode.dev/agents. The documented browser flow requires GitHub sign-in. Availability of providers and actions can differ between the desktop and browser experiences.

Read the task board
The Agents window is organized around a sessions list and several inspection areas. Select a session to make it active; the surrounding panels then show information for that session.
Sessions list
Use the sessions list to identify which work is waiting, active, or ready for review. Give each request a precise outcome in its opening prompt so similarly named sessions are distinguishable. When several projects are involved, confirm the project or workspace associated with a session before approving an action.

Chat panel
The Chat panel contains the agent’s questions, plan, implementation messages, command output, and reported validation. Read the sequence rather than jumping directly to the final statement. A claim that tests passed is useful only when you can see which tests ran and whether they covered the changed behavior.
Files panel
The Files view shows the workspace associated with the selected session. Use it to verify that the agent is working in the intended project and to locate the files named in the plan. It is particularly useful when an agent reports a change but the affected path is not obvious from the conversation.
Changes panel
The Changes view can show different scopes of work:
- Branch changes associated with the current branch context.
- Uncommitted changes that have not been committed.
- All changes available for the session’s working context.
- Last turn changes made during the most recent agent turn.
Start with Last turn when you need to understand the immediate effect of an agent response. Switch to Uncommitted or All to assess the complete review scope before committing or opening a pull request. A clean last turn does not mean the branch is clean; an earlier agent turn may have left related edits.
Follow Plan → Implement → Verify → Review
Plan
Capture the outcome, constraints, affected area, and verification method. Let the agent inspect the repository and ask questions. Review its proposed files and decisions before implementation.

Implement
Choose the implementation action that matches your confidence and supervision needs. For a narrow, well-understood change, normal implementation keeps the interaction focused. For a thoroughly reviewed sequence where unattended progress is acceptable, the session may offer Autopilot. Continue to inspect tool approvals instead of treating automation as a substitute for judgment.
Verify
Ask the agent to run the relevant tests or exercise the application. Verification should include the commands or checks named in the plan, not only a newly created happy-path test. Inspect the reported output for:

- the exact command or task that ran;
- the number and status of tests, checks, or scenarios;
- warnings, skipped cases, retries, or environment limitations;
- failures that the agent may have worked around rather than fixed;
- manual steps still required outside the test suite.
If a test cannot run because a service, secret, browser, or fixture is unavailable, record that limitation and perform an alternative check where possible. Do not describe an unexecuted check as passing.
Review
Review the diff in the Changes panel and, when necessary, open the files in the editor. Compare the actual edits with the approved plan. Look for accidental formatting churn, unrelated refactors, changed generated artifacts, altered configuration, weakened validation, or tests that assert implementation details instead of user-visible behavior.
After the diff and validation are satisfactory, the Agents window can expose configured workspace tasks, terminal commands, commit actions, and pull-request creation or follow-up options. Use those actions only after confirming the repository, branch, authoring context, and review requirements.
Monitor several coding sessions without losing context
When assigning work across projects, use a consistent review order for every session:
- Select the session and confirm its project in the Files panel.
- Read the latest Chat messages for blockers, questions, and reported commands.
- Inspect Last turn changes to see what just happened.
- Inspect the broader Uncommitted or All view before judging the complete diff.
- Check validation output and note anything that was skipped or unavailable.
- Return to the session for feedback, approval, or a narrower follow-up request.
Keep requests independent when possible. A session that changes an API contract should not silently depend on an unrelated session’s local edits. If two sessions touch the same files, stop and reconcile the scope before accepting both sets of changes.
Use descriptive prompts such as “Add pagination to the admin audit table” rather than “Fix admin.” The clearer the session objective, the easier it is to identify the correct card when several agents are active.

Prerequisites and current limitations
| Area | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Session providers | The Agents window documentation lists GitHub Copilot, Claude API or BYOK, Codex with an existing ChatGPT sign-in, and other BYOK configurations. Availability depends on your configured account and provider. |
| Plan mode | The agents dropdown currently does not include the Plan agent. Start planning with /plan in a Copilot or Claude session; Copilot may also enter planning when you ask for a plan. |
| Browser access | The documented browser entry point requires GitHub sign-in. |
| Automations | VS Code documentation labels Automations as preview. Preview behavior, labels, and supported actions may change. |
| Experimental features | Some Agents window features and harnesses are experimental or limited, so a control or workflow shown in one environment may not be available in another. |
These limitations affect how you start and supervise work, not the core review discipline. If a provider or automation is unavailable, use the Chat view to plan and implement, then inspect the resulting files and tests through the tools your installation supports.

Troubleshoot common task-board problems
The Plan option is missing
Do not search only the agents dropdown. Start a supported Copilot or Claude session and enter /plan. In Copilot, asking explicitly for a plan may also trigger planning automatically. If the command is not recognized, verify that the intended session target and sign-in are active.
The wrong project is being changed
Stop the session before approving more actions. Select the session, inspect the Files panel, and verify the workspace root. If the agent has already edited files in the wrong project, use the Changes view to identify the complete scope and revert or move the work deliberately rather than copying isolated snippets.
The plan is too broad
Submit feedback that names the files or subsystem that should remain out of scope. Ask the agent to separate required changes from optional cleanup and to explain any dependency or migration. Review the regenerated plan before implementation.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe agent says verification passed, but the result is unclear
Ask for the exact commands, test counts, and relevant output. Check for skipped tests, retries, missing services, or a manual step that was not performed. Then inspect the diff to ensure the tests exercise the changed path rather than merely compiling it.
You cannot find what changed
Use Last turn first, then widen the Changes view to Uncommitted or All. The session’s latest turn may contain only part of the work, while earlier turns or another agent may have changed additional files.
A browser-based board does not open
Use the documented entry point and complete the required GitHub sign-in. If the browser experience lacks a control available on desktop, continue in the desktop Agents window or focused Chat view and treat the two surfaces as complementary rather than identical.
A repeatable checklist
- Open the intended project and Chat.
- Choose the appropriate session target.
- Enter
/planor select Plan. - Describe the outcome, constraints, and success checks.
- Answer clarifying questions and resolve assumptions.
- Review scope, files, decisions, dependencies, and verification.
- Give feedback or select an implementation action.
- Use the Agents window when you need a cross-project monitoring board.
- Inspect Chat, Files, and the appropriate Changes scope.
- Run and read the relevant tests or application checks.
- Review the complete diff, not just the latest turn.
- Only then use configured commit or pull-request actions.
This workflow keeps the agent useful without making it opaque: planning exposes intent, the board exposes progress, verification supplies evidence, and the final diff remains the basis for your approval.
