VS Code Remote – SSH lets you use your local VS Code window to work directly in a VPS folder. VS Code installs a VS Code Server on the VPS, so source code, terminals, language services, extensions, and debugging run remotely while your computer provides the editor interface.
The reliable setup order is: prepare a supported Linux VPS and SSH access, verify ordinary SSH from your computer, install the Remote – SSH extension, connect with the same SSH account, and then open the remote workspace. If ordinary ssh user@hostname does not work, Remote – SSH will not work either.

What VS Code Remote – SSH does
Remote – SSH opens a folder on a remote machine, virtual machine, or container that has a running SSH server. On the first connection, VS Code installs its server component on the remote operating system. Your local VS Code window remains the user interface, but commands and development tools execute on the VPS.
That means the project does not need to be copied to your computer. The integrated terminal starts on the VPS, language servers inspect the VPS filesystem, and Run and Debug launches programs in the remote environment. A project can therefore use the VPS’s operating-system packages, runtime, database access, network location, and CPU without maintaining a second local checkout.

Microsoft describes the extension as opening a remote folder and taking full advantage of VS Code’s feature set; it also notes that source code does not need to be on the local machine because commands and other extensions run directly on the remote machine.
Check the VPS and local prerequisites
Check both ends before installing anything. Remote – SSH is not an SFTP browser: it needs a shell-accessible host and a supported server environment.

| Local computer | Visual Studio Code, an OpenSSH-compatible client, and the Remote – SSH extension | The local window starts the SSH connection and displays the remote workspace. |
| VPS | A running, supported OpenSSH server and a user account that can log in | The extension uses SSH to start and manage the remote VS Code Server. |
| VPS operating system | A glibc-based Linux system with kernel 4.18 or newer, glibc 2.28 or newer, and libstdc++ 3.4.25 or newer | These are the current general Linux prerequisites for the prebuilt remote server. |
| VPS utilities | /bin/bash, tar, and either curl or wget |

Alpine Linux is not supported as a Remote – SSH host. It is supported for other scenarios such as Dev Containers and WSL, but that does not make it a compatible Remote – SSH server. On ARM hosts, the core connection can work while individual extensions that contain x86-native binaries fail.
VS Code release 1.99, released in March 2025, made prebuilt servers require glibc 2.28 or later. If an older VPS reports a glibc mismatch, upgrading the operating system is usually safer than replacing system libraries manually.
Prepare SSH access on the VPS
1. Confirm the connection details
Record the VPS public address or DNS name, the Linux username, the SSH port, and the firewall or cloud security-group rule that permits your address. A nonstandard SSH port is fine, but you must use it consistently in both ordinary SSH and VS Code.
Make sure the SSH service is running and that the account has a home directory. Remote – SSH cannot operate on hosting that offers only FTP or SFTP without shell access.

ssh-keygen -t ed25519
Accept the default file location or choose a dedicated filename. Protect the private key with a passphrase. RSA 4096 is a fallback for legacy systems that cannot accept Ed25519:
ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096
3. Install the public key for the VPS account
Place the contents of your public-key file, normally ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub, on the VPS in that account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file. You can use an existing administrative login or your provider’s console to create the directory and file. On the VPS, permissions should be restrictive:
chmod 700 ~/.ssh
chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
Do not copy the private key to the VPS. The private key stays on your local computer; SSH proves possession of it when you connect.

4. Test ordinary SSH before opening VS Code
From a local terminal, run the exact account and host combination you will use in VS Code:
ssh user@hostname
If the SSH service listens on another port, test it explicitly:
ssh -p 2222 user@hostname
Confirm that you receive a shell prompt on the VPS, then run uname -a, free -h, and checks for /bin/bash, tar, and curl or wget. Fix DNS, routing, firewall, account, key, and permission problems at this stage. VS Code adds another layer, so using it before basic SSH works makes diagnosis harder.
Install Remote – SSH and connect
- Install the Remote – SSH extension in your local VS Code installation.
- Open the Command Palette and run Remote-SSH: Connect to Host….
- Enter the same value that worked in your terminal, such as
user@hostname. If you use a nonstandard port, select or configure the corresponding SSH host entry. - If VS Code cannot identify the operating system, select the remote platform manually when prompted. Choosing the wrong platform can prevent the server from starting.
- Wait while VS Code downloads and installs VS Code Server on the VPS. Open View > Output, choose the Remote – SSH channel, and watch the installation messages.
- After the connection opens, choose File > Open… for a folder or File > Open Workspace… for a workspace file stored on the VPS.
The first connection can take longer because the server package must be installed. Later connections normally reuse the installed server until an update or cleanup requires another installation.

Verify where your code and tools run
Use Terminal > New Terminal after the remote window opens. The prompt should identify the VPS, and commands such as pwd, hostname, and git status should refer to the remote filesystem and account.
Install project runtimes, package managers, dependencies, linters, language servers, and debuggers in the remote environment. For example, a Python virtual environment, Node package installation, compiler, or database client used by the project must be available on the VPS. The local machine does not automatically provide those tools to a remote terminal.
Use the normal VS Code Run and Debug controls once the required debugger and project configuration exist on the VPS. Build output, temporary files, generated artifacts, and application processes are remote unless you deliberately configure a separate local workflow.
Allow the network traffic Remote – SSH needs
SSH itself must be reachable from your local computer to the VPS. In addition, VS Code Server installation requires outbound HTTPS access to update.code.visualstudio.com and vscode.download.prss.microsoft.com. Depending on where the download is performed, the VPS may need access to those endpoints as well as your local computer.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Installing extensions through the VS Code interface can require marketplace.visualstudio.com and *.gallerycdn.vsassets.io. Corporate proxies, egress firewalls, and restrictive VPS policies can therefore allow the initial SSH login while still blocking server or extension installation.
After setup, client-server communication travels through an authenticated, secure SSH tunnel. Password authentication is supported, but key-based authentication is recommended for convenience and security. Remote – SSH does not save passwords or alternate authentication tokens.
On shared Linux or macOS SSH hosts, the optional setting Remote.SSH: Remote Server Listen On Socket can improve isolation by having the remote server listen on a Unix socket rather than a network-facing port. Review the effect on your host’s account and permission model before enabling it for multiple users.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
SSH times out or the host cannot be found
- Run
ssh user@hostnameoutside VS Code. - Check that the hostname resolves to the current VPS address.
- Verify the VPS firewall, provider security group, local network, and SSH port.
- Confirm that the SSH daemon is running and listening on the expected interface.
A timeout normally indicates DNS, routing, firewall, or cloud security-group configuration rather than an editor problem.
Permission denied or key authentication fails
- Confirm that you are using the correct Linux username; the provider’s dashboard username is not always the same as the SSH account.
- Check that the public key is in that user’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keys, not another account’s file. - Correct ownership and permissions on the home directory,
.ssh, andauthorized_keysif the log reports “bad permissions.” - Use the same private key that corresponds to the installed public key, or select it through your SSH configuration.
VS Code cannot install the remote server
Open the Remote – SSH output channel and read the first error rather than only the final connection failure. Check the VPS for /bin/bash, tar, and curl or wget, then verify the kernel, glibc, and libstdc++ versions against the prerequisite table.
If the VPS cannot download the server, allow the documented HTTPS endpoints. Alternatively, configure remote.SSH.localServerDownload so VS Code downloads the server on the local computer and transfers it to the VPS. The remote account still needs permission to unpack and run the transferred files.
The platform is detected incorrectly
Reconnect and select the correct remote platform when prompted. A Linux VPS should not be identified as another operating system. Inspect the output channel for the platform VS Code selected and correct the SSH host entry if necessary.
The connection works but an extension fails
Extensions installed in a remote window run on the VPS, not automatically on your local computer. Install the remote-compatible version from the Extensions view. On ARM systems, an extension with an x86-native binary may have no compatible build even though the VS Code Server itself starts. Replace it with a platform-neutral extension or use a supported architecture.
The VPS is too small for the project
One gigabyte of RAM is the documented minimum for a remote host, not a guarantee that a large language server, compiler, container, and application will remain responsive together. The recommended baseline is 2 GB RAM and two CPU cores. Monitor memory and CPU on the VPS while indexing or building; increase resources or reduce simultaneously running services when the remote window becomes sluggish.
The host is Alpine Linux or SFTP-only
Alpine Linux is not a supported Remote – SSH host, and an SFTP-only account lacks the shell and server model the extension requires. Use a supported glibc-based distribution with OpenSSH and shell access, or choose a different workflow designed for file transfer.

Understand file-transfer alternatives
Remote – SSH is for interactive remote execution, not for synchronizing a local project with a server. Your local tools do not automatically see the VPS filesystem.

| Edit and run code in the VPS environment | VS Code Remote – SSH | Requires a supported shell host, SSH access, and a remote VS Code Server. |
| Browse or make occasional single-file edits from a local filesystem view | SSHFS | Convenient for browsing and single-file work, but slower for bulk operations. |
| Move many files so local tools can read or write them | rsync | Better suited to bulk transfers, but it is synchronization rather than an interactive remote development session. |
Choose Remote – SSH when the important requirement is that terminals, language services, debugging, and application processes run on the VPS. Choose SSHFS or rsync when a local application must operate on a local-mounted or synchronized copy.
Use a VPS setup checklist
- Supported glibc-based Linux distribution; not Alpine for Remote – SSH.
- Kernel 4.18 or newer, glibc 2.28 or newer, and libstdc++ 3.4.25 or newer.
- At least 1 GB RAM; 2 GB and two CPU cores recommended.
- OpenSSH service, shell account, and known SSH port.
- Ed25519 key installed in the correct account’s
authorized_keys, with restrictive permissions. - Successful standalone
ssh user@hostnametest. - Inbound SSH permitted by the VPS firewall and provider security group.
- Outbound HTTPS permitted for VS Code Server and, when needed, extension downloads.
- Remote platform selected correctly in VS Code.
- Project runtimes, dependencies, linters, and debuggers installed on the VPS.
Choose the right VPS for Remote – SSH
When provisioning or comparing VPS options, evaluate the complete development path rather than only the advertised CPU and memory. Confirm that the provider offers a documented Linux distribution meeting the runtime-library requirements, gives you OpenSSH shell access and key management, permits inbound SSH and required outbound HTTPS, and offers enough CPU and RAM for the project and its extensions.
Architecture is also a compatibility decision. An ARM VPS can reduce the choice of extensions that depend on x86-native binaries. If the project depends on such tooling, verify extension support before committing to the architecture.
Finally, decide whether your work is primarily interactive remote execution or local bulk-file processing. That decision determines whether Remote – SSH, SSHFS, rsync, or a combination best fits the workflow.
Bottom line
To develop on a VPS with VS Code, make ordinary SSH reliable first, use a supported glibc-based host with sufficient resources and download access, then connect through Remote-SSH: Connect to Host…. Once VS Code Server is installed, the editor is local but the project, terminal, extensions, language services, and debugging run on the VPS.
