VLC for Android plays local audio and video, network streams, and DVD ISO files. You can browse media in its library, open sources such as NAS or shared drives, choose available audio and subtitle tracks, and adjust audio with an equalizer and filters. The current version listed by VideoLAN is 3.7.0; which playback and decoding options work depends partly on your device and media.
What VLC for Android can do
VideoLAN describes the app as a full port of VLC media player for Android. Its listed features include a media library with search and history; HLS and DASH network streams; browsing NAS and shared drives; embedded and external subtitles, including ASS and DVD subtitles; multiple audio and subtitle tracks; gestures and headphone controls; and support for Android TV and Chromebooks. It also lists secondary-display playback, 360 video, and 3D audio. These are stated capabilities, not a guarantee that every file, server, or feature will work on every device.
VLC is useful whether your media is stored on the device or comes from a network source. Start with the source that fits your situation:
- Local files: Browse the app’s media library or open a file from device storage. The library can organize available media and provide search and history.
- Network playback: VLC lists HLS and DASH streams as well as NAS and shared-drive browsing. Network access may depend on how the server or share is configured; the feature listing does not establish that every configuration works without setup.
Play a video or audio file
For local playback, open VLC and select the item from its media library, or use the device’s file browser to open a supported file with VLC. The app supports both audio and video. Exact controls and navigation can vary with app version, Android release, device type, and the way the file is opened, so follow the controls shown on your device rather than relying on a particular button name.

During playback, VLC lists gestures and headphone controls among its features. If a file does not play as expected, the cause may involve the file’s encoding, the device’s capabilities, or the playback mode; the available evidence does not establish universal codec or resolution support.
Play a network stream or browse a shared drive
VLC lists HLS and DASH streams and browsing for NAS and shared drives. Use the app’s network-browsing or stream-opening options to reach your source; the precise menu labels and setup steps are not established here and can vary by version. For a share, you may need the server address and any credentials or access permissions required by its administrator. For a stream, use the address supplied by its provider.

A feature listing is not a guarantee that VLC can connect to every server or URL. Network protocols, authentication, firewall rules, and server configuration can affect access. For the current app and linked help resources, use VideoLAN’s official VLC for Android download page.

Choose audio tracks and subtitles
When a video contains multiple audio tracks or subtitle tracks, VLC lists track selection as a supported feature. Open the playback controls and choose from the tracks the file provides. A track will not appear if it is not present or available to the player.

Embedded subtitles
Embedded subtitles are stored inside the media file. VLC lists support for embedded subtitles, including ASS and DVD subtitles. Select an available subtitle track during playback; the track names and controls depend on the file and the app version.
External subtitles
External subtitles are separate files. VLC lists support for external subtitles, but the exact method for associating a file with a video can vary across app versions and how the media is stored. Use the playback subtitle controls or the app’s file-browsing options to select an external subtitle when available. If the desired subtitle is missing, check that the subtitle file is accessible and compatible with the video and player.

Adjust sound with the equalizer and filters
VLC lists an equalizer and audio filters as playback features. They let you adjust sound to suit your listening preferences, but no single setting is best for every recording, speaker, or headphone. The VLC for Android 3.7.0 announcement, dated February 25, 2026, highlights a completely new equalizer and improved settings backup. That release date identifies the announcement, not the origin date of every feature or proof that no newer build exists.

VideoLAN lists multi-core and full hardware decoding, but notes that hardware decoding is not supported on all devices. The Android version listing begins at Android 4.2 (platform-14) or later; below Android 4.3, VideoLAN says software decoding may be the only supported option. Meeting the app’s Android requirement therefore does not guarantee that hardware decoding is available.

Hardware decoding often gives better performance according to VideoLAN, but that is not a promise of better results for every phone, file, or playback condition. If hardware decoding is unavailable or playback has problems, try software decoding if the app offers that option on your device. Results depend on the device and media, and no device-by-device performance test is established here.
Get VLC safely and find help
VideoLAN lists VLC for Android version 3.7.0 and support for Android 4.2 (platform-14) or later on its official download page, which also links to documentation and help resources. Check that page for the current listing and use official channels rather than an unofficial APK source. VideoLAN’s general features page states, “No spyware, No ads, No user tracking.” That is VideoLAN’s publisher statement, not an independently audited privacy finding specific to the Android version.
