Usually, you can’t plug USB-C headphones directly into an Android phone’s 3.5mm headphone jack. The jack sends analog audio, while USB-C headphones receive digital audio. To connect them, use the phone’s USB-C port if it supports digital USB audio, or find a converter specifically designed to take analog audio from the jack and send it as USB digital audio. A standard USB-C-to-3.5mm headphone adapter does the opposite.

Why the two connections do not work directly

A 3.5mm headphone jack provides analog audio. USB-C headphones use a digital USB audio interface; Android’s accessory specification says permitted USB headsets use that digital interface. The connectors therefore carry audio in different forms, and a simple plug or passive adapter cannot make them interchangeable. Android Open Source Project’s USB headset specification describes the USB headset requirement.

Choose a connection route

Route What it does What to check
Use the phone’s 3.5mm jack Sends analog audio to compatible 3.5mm headphones. It does not directly support a digital USB-C headset.
Connect the headphones to the phone’s USB-C port Sends digital audio over USB-C. Check that the exact phone supports USB-C digital audio and USB host/audio operation. Some devices may also require enabling USB audio in sound settings.
Use a 3.5mm analog-input-to-USB-C digital-audio interface Could convert the phone’s analog jack output into USB digital audio for the headphones. Confirm the device explicitly accepts analog audio input and outputs USB digital audio, and that it works with the phone’s USB host/audio mode.
Use a USB-C-to-3.5mm DAC dongle Converts digital audio from a phone’s USB-C port to analog audio for 3.5mm headphones. This is the reverse direction, so it does not connect USB-C headphones to the phone’s headphone jack.

Check whether your phone supports USB-C headphones

  1. Identify the exact phone model. Look up its manufacturer specifications or ask the manufacturer whether it supports USB-C digital audio and USB host/audio operation. A USB-C-shaped port alone does not confirm that it can send audio to the headphones.
  2. Check the sound settings. Look for an option to enable audio through USB-C. Google says some devices require this setting. The label and location can vary by phone.
  3. Connect the headphones to USB-C and test playback. Google’s Pixel guidance says audio plays through a plugged-in accessory. If you hear nothing, check the volume and confirm that the phone and headphones support digital audio together. Google Pixel Support: Listen to music, calls & more on Pixel.

If you want to use the 3.5mm jack, verify the converter’s direction

Before buying a converter, check its technical specifications rather than relying on the connector names in a product listing. For this setup, it must take analog audio from a 3.5mm input and deliver USB digital audio to the headphones. It must also work with the phone’s USB host/audio support.

The commonly sold USB-C-to-3.5mm DAC adapter is intended for the opposite setup: a phone sends digital audio from USB-C, and the adapter supplies analog audio to conventional 3.5mm headphones. Samsung’s guidance for applicable Galaxy devices calls for a DAC-compatible USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter, while Android’s documentation describes digital-to-analog conversion for this adapter type. Neither establishes that it can take output from a 3.5mm jack and drive USB-C headphones. Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter
  • The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
  • Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.

Official documentation does not establish a universally compatible analog-input-to-USB-C converter. Ask both the phone and converter makers about compatibility with your exact models before purchasing.

Check calls and microphone support separately

Successful music playback does not guarantee that calls or the headphone microphone will work. Google notes that some devices do not support calls with USB-C earbuds. If calls matter, verify support for calls on the phone and microphone input through the chosen converter as well as basic audio playback. Google Pixel Support: Set up & use your Pixel USB-C earbuds.

Troubleshoot a connection that has no sound

  • Confirm the audio path. Check that you connected USB-C headphones to a phone USB-C port that supports digital audio, or that your converter accepts analog input from the 3.5mm jack and outputs USB digital audio.
  • Check settings and volume. Enable USB-C audio if the phone has a relevant setting, then raise the volume and test playback again.
  • Separate playback issues from call issues. If music works but calls or microphone input do not, check phone call support and the converter’s microphone path.
  • Ask about the exact models. If specifications are unclear, ask the phone and accessory makers about USB Audio Class support, USB host mode, analog input, and call/microphone support.
