Use the Scanner to inspect suspicious doors, walls, and other points of interest, then use the map to remember where to return. A scan can indicate that a door needs a key or that a wall can be destroyed with explosives; the key or tool—not the scan—opens the route. The exact benefit of Scanner upgrades for finding hidden items has not been confirmed, so do not rely on an upgrade to reveal every secret automatically.
What the Scanner does during exploration
The developer interview on the Epic Games Store describes the Scanner as part of the game’s map-and-exploration workflow. It can mark a door that needs a key or a wall that can be destroyed with explosives. The game’s official description also presents the Scanner and tools unlocked during play as ways to open branching paths and hidden areas.
In practice, treat a scan as information about a point of interest and a reminder to revisit it—not as a substitute for the item needed to pass. A review from GamesRadar+ describes the Scanner providing clues such as notes and keycard requirements, and tracing power lines through walls to nodes that open doors. Those examples illustrate how scans can help you understand a blocker; they do not confirm what a Scanner upgrade changes.
How to use scans and map markers
- Scan points of interest. When you encounter a suspicious door, wall, or other feature, use the Scanner to inspect it. Note any requirement or information the scan reveals.
- Keep track of blocked routes. Use the map markers to remember doors and walls you cannot pass yet. The developer’s interview specifically describes marking key-locked doors and walls that need explosives.
- Find the required item or tool. A marked route is a lead for later, not a route the Scanner has already opened. Continue exploring until you have the relevant key or explosive tool.
- Return to the marked location. Once equipped with what the blocker requires, revisit it and try the route again. This backtracking is part of how the game’s branching paths and hidden areas are explored.
What Scanner upgrades are confirmed to do
The available sources do not establish the precise effect of a Scanner upgrade on hidden-item discovery. A recently updated Scanner guide likewise says the final-game upgrade effects have not been confirmed. There is no supported basis here to claim that an upgrade increases scan range, makes hidden items glow, or automatically identifies every secret.

For now, use the Scanner’s confirmed exploration and mapping functions, and treat any upgrade-specific behavior as unverified unless the game itself or a reliable current source clearly describes it. The sources also do not establish upgrade locations, costs, or exact upgrade steps.

Some blocked points of interest are part of the route to hidden areas, but a scan alone does not grant access. Keeping track of these locations helps you return when your equipment changes instead of repeatedly trying to pass the same blocker without the required item.
The developer interview notes that map secrets include hidden rooms and that finding them is part of reaching 100 percent completion. That makes markers useful for thorough exploration: they help you distinguish a location to investigate later from one you can access now.
