Use the inner screen when a task benefits from a larger layout, the outer screen for ordinary folded-phone use or sharing a translation, and tabletop mode when you need hands-free viewing or a supported camera angle. For two apps at once, unfold the Pixel Fold and use split screen.
When to use each screen
The Pixel Fold’s inner display is useful when an app can take advantage of a larger layout or when you want more room for viewing. Google identifies Drive, Docs, and Sheets as Workspace apps optimized for full-screen mode, and also highlights editing photos taken with the Fold and watching movies. App behavior varies, so do not assume every app will use the larger display in the same way. Google’s full-screen mode guide lists the supported examples.
The outer screen is handy when the phone is folded, and it can show translations to someone facing you during a supported Google Translate conversation. For a two-app workflow, unfold the phone and use split screen. For hands-free viewing or some camera tasks, position the phone in tabletop mode.

Split screen keeps two apps visible together on the unfolded display. Google documents three ways to start it:

- Use the taskbar: Open an app, then slowly swipe up from the bottom edge to reveal the taskbar. Drag a second app from the taskbar to one side of the screen.
- Use Overview: Slowly swipe up from the bottom edge and hold to open Overview. Select Split, then choose the second app.
- Use an app icon: From Home or All apps, long-press an app icon and choose Split.
To return to a single app, drag the center divider to either edge of the display. Swiping up to Home exits split screen. See Google’s split-screen and app-switching instructions if the controls differ from what you expect.
Save a frequently used app pair
If you regularly use the same two apps together, open Overview and choose Save app pair beneath the focus tile. You can add the saved pair to Home or the taskbar, so the combination is easier to launch again.

Switch between apps with the taskbar
While the phone is unfolded, slowly swipe up from the bottom edge to show the taskbar, then tap the app you want. You can add or rearrange taskbar apps by long-pressing an app in the app library and dragging it into position. Google notes that apps in a split-screen pair can still be used when the phone is folded.

- Open Google Translate and unfold the phone.
- Choose Conversation, then Face to face.
- Choose Dual Screen.
- Begin speaking; translations appear on the outer display for the other person to read.

Select the content, fold the phone into an L shape, and set it on a surface with the cover screen facing down. To leave tabletop mode, unfold the phone fully or close it.

Take a tabletop group photo
Open Camera, fold the phone into an L shape, and place it with the screen facing the photographer and the rear cameras facing the subject. Google says the tabletop photo feature is available only in select apps; its instructions include using a 3- or 10-second timer. The exact behavior therefore depends on app support.
