For sharper portraits with the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max, put good light on the subject, keep the face in focus, and hold the phone steady. Try Portrait mode, then check the face and blur edges before relying on the result. For distant subjects, start with the telephoto camera’s approximate 4× optical framing or Huawei’s 8× optical-quality zoom; use digital zoom up to 100× only when you need the extra reach, since Huawei does not claim that every zoom level retains equal detail.
What the Mate 90 Pro Max camera offers
Huawei lists three rear cameras: a 50 MP main camera with a variable F1.4–F4.0 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS), a 40 MP ultrawide camera, and a 200 MP large-sensor telephoto camera with OIS and tele-macro. All three use RYYB sensors, and autofocus is listed. The listed focal lengths are 24 mm for the main camera, 13 mm for the ultrawide, and 89 mm for the telephoto. The available features include Portrait mode, variable-aperture blur, AI pose recommendations, AI-assisted composition, Night Portrait, and High-Resolution mode. These are tools to try, not guarantees of sharper photos or better results in every scene. Give the subject enough light
Place the subject where their face is well lit. In dim light, steady the phone and ask the subject to pause during capture. OIS is specified for the main and telephoto cameras, but it cannot guarantee sharpness when a person moves.

Focus on the face and check the eyes
Keep the face within the focus area and confirm that the eyes look sharp in the captured image. Autofocus is listed, but the specification does not mean every frame will focus exactly where you want.
Try Portrait mode, then inspect the result
Portrait mode and variable-aperture blur can help create a portrait look. Review the subject’s outline and the background blur: if edges appear distracting or unnatural, take a standard photo as a comparison. Huawei lists these features but does not publish test results establishing that they improve every portrait.

Use some distance for a natural perspective
When space permits, step back and use moderate telephoto framing rather than moving very close to the face. This is general portrait guidance, not a tested distance recommendation for this phone. Huawei’s rear-camera specifications list these zoom modes but do not provide independent image-quality measurements across them. For a distant subject, begin with the telephoto framing or optical-quality step, hold the phone firmly, focus, and review the result at full size. If detail matters, avoid assuming that a larger zoom number means a sharper image.
When the Ruiying Z10 module applies
Huawei describes the Ruiying Z10 modular camera as offering a 24–240 mm range and 10× continuous optical zoom. Its photography and video functions require the Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition, according to Huawei’s product page. It is an optional, edition-specific accessory; the listed camera system already includes portrait and zoom capabilities, and Huawei does not say standard-edition owners need the module for ordinary portraits or zoom photos.

Huawei’s buying guide identifies HarmonyOS 7.0 as applicable to Mate 90 series buying guidance and lists covered device editions. It does not provide a camera tutorial or menu-by-menu instructions.
