For smoother-looking social clips with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, choose portrait or landscape before recording, set the gimbal’s rotational speed for the move, and handle the camera deliberately. Its three-axis mechanical gimbal helps stabilize the camera, while ActiveTrack can keep a selected subject in frame when the mode supports it. Neither feature replaces intentional composition and movement.
Choose the video orientation before you record
Decide whether the clip is for a vertical or horizontal layout before you press record. DJI says the Pocket 3 follows the screen’s orientation by default; you can also choose Landscape, Portrait, or Auto-Rotation in settings. Once a recording starts, its orientation is locked, so changing the screen position mid-clip will not switch the recording format.
For a vertical social post, rotate the screen and confirm portrait framing before recording. For a horizontal video, confirm landscape framing instead. Leave enough room around a person or moving subject to keep the composition usable as they move.
Set up the gimbal for the movement you want
The Pocket 3 uses three-axis mechanical gimbal stabilization. DJI also provides a rotational-speed control: swipe down from the camera view to open Control Center, then tap the walking-person icon. DJI describes the available response as ranging from Default to Fast.

For a controlled pan or a slow walk, begin with a deliberate pace and avoid abrupt turns. Faster response may suit a scene that calls for more energetic camera movement, but it does not make rushed movement look composed. These are practical starting points, not settings DJI identifies as universally best.
Keep the distinction clear: the gimbal stabilizes the camera’s orientation, while your pace and path determine how the shot moves through the scene. Move smoothly, turn your body rather than flicking your wrist, and pause briefly before and after a pan if you want clean edit points.

Use ActiveTrack when keeping a subject framed matters
To start tracking on the camera, double-tap the subject on the screen. To stop, tap outside the tracking frame or press the joystick once. If you are using DJI Mimo, select the subject in the frame; tap the X on the tracking frame to stop tracking.

In those situations—or whenever tracking is unnecessary—aim and frame the camera manually. Tracking can help keep a moving person in shot, but it does not choose the overall composition for you.

Choose handheld movement or a stationary setup
For a moving shot, use the gimbal handheld and keep your movement purposeful. For a static, hands-free composition—such as a talking segment at a desk—a supported DJI Mini Tripod can hold the camera in place. A tripod serves a different purpose from gimbal stabilization: it supports a fixed shot rather than smoothing your movement through a scene.
Keep exposure choices separate from stabilization
For automatic operation, let the camera manage exposure. If you need direct control, DJI documents manual shutter and ISO adjustment in Pro mode: swipe left, enable Pro mode, then choose Exposure > M (Manual). DJI’s documentation does not prescribe one shutter speed as the universal way to make social video look smooth, so choose manual exposure for the control you need rather than treating a specific number as a guaranteed fix.

DJI lists a Magnetic ND Filters Set as a supported accessory. It may be relevant when managing exposure in bright conditions, but it is optional; it does not replace the gimbal or make every exposure choice correct for every scene.

Plan for speech and other sound
The Pocket 3 has three built-in microphones. For a separate wireless microphone option, DJI lists the DJI Mic 2 Transmitter as compatible. Choose based on the recording situation: the built-in microphones may be sufficient for some clips, while a separate transmitter is an option when you want to capture speech with a wireless microphone. The manufacturer’s compatibility listing does not establish that an external mic is necessary or superior in every setting.
Quick pre-recording checklist
- Confirm portrait or landscape framing before recording; orientation locks once the clip begins.
- Set rotational speed in Control Center to suit the planned move.
- Decide whether ActiveTrack is useful and check that the selected mode supports it.
- Use a Mini Tripod for a fixed, hands-free shot; use handheld gimbal movement for a moving shot.
- Choose automatic or Pro-mode manual exposure based on how much control the scene needs.
- If the clip includes speech, decide whether the built-in microphones or a compatible DJI Mic 2 Transmitter fit the setup.
