Windows 11 still includes the classic player, but Microsoft now calls it Windows Media Player Legacy. It is an optional Windows feature, not a separate installer, and it is different from the newer Media Player app.
Once installed, you can use the legacy player for local MP3, WAV, WMA, AVI, and WMV files, manage a media library, create playlists, rip audio CDs, and burn discs where your hardware and Windows configuration support those functions. It does not add DVD-video playback, and some newer formats require optional codecs or extensions.
Install Windows Media Player Legacy
Windows Media Player Legacy is available as an Optional Feature in some editions of Windows 11. Use the current Windows 11 Settings path rather than older instructions that refer to “Apps & features.”

Install it from Windows Terminal or PowerShell
If the Optional Features interface does not work, install the feature from an elevated terminal. Open Windows Terminal (Admin), Command Prompt (Admin), or PowerShell (Admin), then run one of these commands.
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:"WindowsMediaPlayer" /All
PowerShell equivalent:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName "WindowsMediaPlayer" -All
The name is slightly confusing: Settings displays Windows Media Player Legacy, while DISM and PowerShell use WindowsMediaPlayer.
Tell the classic player apart from the new Media Player app
| Application | How it appears | Typical reason to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Media Player Legacy | Installed as an Optional Feature | Classic library, playlist, CD ripping, burning, and familiar menu layout |
| Media Player | Modern Windows app | Newer interface and modern video playback features, including better support for contemporary video use cases |
Microsoft recommends the newer Media Player app for modern video features such as 4K. Installing the legacy player does not replace or remove that app.
Use the classic player interface
The legacy player can open files directly, organize folders into a library, and play music or video from removable storage. If the traditional menu bar is hidden, press Ctrl+M.
Open a file
- Launch Windows Media Player.
- Press Ctrl+O, if the Open command is available in your version, or use File > Open after pressing Ctrl+M.
- Browse to the audio or video file and select it.
You can also right-click a compatible file in File Explorer and choose Open with > Windows Media Player. To make it the default for a file type, go to Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for the extension such as .mp3 or .wmv, and select Windows Media Player.
Add folders to the media library
The player monitors the folders included in its music, video, or picture libraries. If files are missing, check the library locations in the player’s organization settings and add the folder containing the media. Files do not have to be copied into a special Windows Media Player folder; the library stores information about files in their existing locations.

Restore a damaged library
If songs or videos appear duplicated, disappear from the library, or show stale information, restore the library database:
- Press Ctrl+M to show the menu bar.
- Choose Tools > Advanced > Restore Media Library.
Restoring the library rebuilds its catalog; it does not recreate media files that have been deleted or moved to an unavailable location.
Clear playback history
To remove the player’s recent-file and playback history, open Tools > Options > Privacy, select Clear History, and select OK. If the menu bar is hidden, press Ctrl+M first.
Reset the player’s database manually
Use this when restoring the library from the player does not resolve persistent catalog problems. Close Windows Media Player first.

- Restart Windows Media Player and allow it to rebuild the database.
This can remove the player’s catalog information and custom library state. Your music, videos, and other original media files remain in their normal folders.

Understand format and codec support
Microsoft lists MP3, WAV, WMA, AVI, and WMV among the common formats supported by Windows Media Player. Windows also has built-in support for a broader set of audio and video formats, including AAC, M4A, FLAC, ALAC, MPEG-4/H.264, VC-1, VP8, and Motion JPEG. Support can vary according to the codec inside the file, not just its filename extension.
A file named .mp4, for example, can contain video or audio encoded in a way the player cannot decode. To inspect a file, right-click it in File Explorer, select Properties, and open the Details tab.
For additional formats, Microsoft lists these optional extensions:

AC-3 and Dolby Digital on Windows 11 24H2
Beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2, AC-3/Dolby Digital is no longer included by default. A computer manufacturer may have preinstalled the codec, and an upgrade from an earlier Windows installation may retain it. Otherwise, an AC-3-encoded file may fail to play or may play without sound.
What to do when playback fails
Stuttering, freezing, skipping, lag, and silence can result from an incompatible file, a missing or damaged codec, an outdated Windows component, a damaged library, a driver problem, third-party media software, or a network issue during streaming.
| Symptom | Likely area to check |
|---|---|
| One file will not play | File codec, corruption, DRM protection, or an unsupported format |
| Many local files fail | Windows components, codecs, drivers, or the player installation |
| Audio is missing from one video | Audio codec, especially AC-3 on some Windows 11 24H2 systems |
| Streaming fails | Internet connection, hosting server, firewall, or network configuration |
| Library items are duplicated or missing | Corrupted media library database |
Error codes in the 0xC00D11xx family commonly point to missing or outdated codecs. Codes such as 0xC00D0BC2, 0xC00D36FA, 0xC00D10B3, and 0xC00D1059 are associated with playback problems. 0xC00D0FEA generally concerns problems playing or downloading media, often involving the network or hosting server. 0xC00D1163 can indicate a digital-rights-management problem with protected content.

Run Microsoft’s troubleshooter
Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Media Player > Run. The option may not appear on every Windows configuration, but it is the first built-in diagnostic to try when available.
Repair or reset the installation
Try the application repair controls at Start > Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > Windows Media Player > … > Advanced options. Select Repair first. If that does not help, select Reset.
Resetting removes custom settings and preferences, but Microsoft states that it does not delete your media files or the library.
Reinstall the Windows media feature
If repair and reset fail, reinstall the feature through Control Panel:
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Programs > Turn Windows features on or off.
- Clear Media Features and select OK.
- Restart the PC.
- Return to the same dialog and reselect Media Features.
- Select OK, then restart again.
For broader Windows component corruption, open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
sfc /scannow

- No DVD-video playback: Microsoft explicitly says DVD playback is not included.
- Not available in every edition: Microsoft offers the feature only in some Windows 11 editions.
- Codec support is not universal: Newer, protected, or unusual files may need a Microsoft Store extension or another compatible player.
- Windows 10 is no longer supported: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows Media Player Legacy remains available in Windows 10, but the operating system no longer receives free security fixes or technical support from Microsoft.
FAQ
Is Windows Media Player Legacy still available in Windows 11?
Yes. Microsoft still offers it as an Optional Feature in some Windows 11 editions. It is installed through Settings rather than downloaded as a separate installer.
Best Value
Why can’t I find Windows Media Player in Optional Features?
Search for the current feature name, Windows Media Player Legacy. Use Start > Settings > System > Optional Features > View features. Availability can also depend on your Windows 11 edition.
What is the difference between Media Player and Windows Media Player Legacy?
Media Player is the newer Windows app. Windows Media Player Legacy is the classic player installed as an Optional Feature, with the older library and menu-based interface.

The Bottom Line
Install the classic player from Settings > System > Optional Features > View features by selecting Windows Media Player Legacy. Use it for its familiar library and menu tools, but keep the newer Media Player app available for modern video formats and features. If playback fails, check the file’s codec before rebuilding the library or reinstalling the Windows feature.
