To open the admin controls in Space Engineers, first promote your player account in the server’s Dedicated Server Manager or VRage Remote Client. Join the world with that account, then press Alt+F10 to open the in-game Admin Screen (older guides may call it Space Master).
The Admin Screen is only one part of server administration. It changes permissions and gameplay properties for the current session, while the Dedicated Server Manager and Remote Client handle promotion, bans, configuration, monitoring and world-entity lists—even when you are not inside the game.

The Admin Screen is the in-game control panel for a promoted administrator. It is designed for immediate interventions such as helping a player whose grid is stuck, correcting a block setting that is consuming excessive simulation resources, or enabling administrative powers while you work in the world. Administrators commonly use it alongside Spectator Mode to inspect areas without moving a character through them.
It is not the same as the Windows application that runs a dedicated server. The dedicated-server application has its own configuration, console and remote-management interfaces. A useful distinction is:

- Admin Screen: an in-game interface opened with Alt+F10 after your account is promoted.
- Dedicated Server Manager: the official desktop interface for server settings, users, mods, messages, maintenance and remote connections.
- VRage Remote Client: a remote administration client that connects to a running server over its HTTP endpoint, allowing administration without joining the world.
- Torch: optional third-party server software for advanced PC administration, live changes and plugins.
Older community posts may use “Space Master” for the Admin Screen. The current in-game label is Admin Screen, so use that name when looking for current documentation or menu text.
Prerequisites: a running dedicated server and an account you can promote
You do not need to buy a second copy of the game to operate a dedicated server. Keen documents dedicated servers as available to players with an existing Space Engineers account. You can install the official tool from Steam or use SteamCMD when the machine will not run the Steam client.

Install the official server tool
- In Steam, open Library, change the library filter to Tools, and install Space Engineers Dedicated Server. For a Steam-client-free installation, follow Keen’s SteamCMD method instead.
- Launch
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. The server can run as a foreground Local/Console instance while you watch its output, or as a Windows service for unattended operation. - If you create a Windows service, use an account with Windows administrator rights. A service is convenient for a machine that should start the server independently of an interactive desktop session, but the foreground mode is easier when diagnosing startup errors.
The official hosting documentation names GTX Gaming for PC hosting and Nitrado for Xbox hosting. Those are hosting choices rather than requirements: the same administration concepts apply whether the server runs on your own Windows machine or a hosted instance, provided you can reach its manager or remote endpoint.
Decide how you will connect for administration
For a local or hosted installation, the simplest route is the server’s built-in Remote Client connection in Dedicated Server Manager. If you will administer from another computer, you can use VRage Remote Client after the server’s HTTP URL, port and secret key are configured. You can also promote yourself while connected through the manager and then perform in-game actions from the game client.
Promote your player account before pressing Alt+F10
Alt+F10 does nothing for an ordinary player. Promotion is the permission step that makes the Admin Screen available.
Promotion through Dedicated Server Manager
- Start the dedicated server and open its Remote Client connection in Dedicated Server Manager.
- Open Admin Tools, then Chat and Players, then Online.
- Find the player name associated with the account you will use in the game.
- Select that player and click Promote. The manager applies the administrator permission to that account.
- Join the server with the promoted account. Once the world loads, press Alt+F10.
Promotion is account-specific. If you join with a different Steam or console identity, that other identity will not inherit the permission. If the name is not in Online, connect that account to the server first, then refresh the list.

Promotion through VRage Remote Client
VRage Remote Client uses the same administrative player-promotion path, but it must be able to authenticate to the server first.
- Configure the server’s HTTP URL and port in the remote-access settings.
- Enter the server’s secret key in the client connection settings.
- Connect to the running server and open Admin Tools → Chat and Players → Online.
- Select your connected player account and press Promote.
- Join the world with that account and press Alt+F10 to open the Admin Screen.
Keep the secret key private. Keen documents HMACSHA1 authentication for custom clients and specifically warns that the private key must remain private. Treat it like a server password: do not paste it into public chat, screenshots, issue reports or shared configuration files.
Using the in-game Admin Screen
Open the screen and identify its scope
After promotion, press Alt+F10 while connected to the server. The controls affect the current game and the permissions or properties available to your administrator account. They are not a replacement for server-wide configuration in Dedicated Server Manager.
Use Spectator Mode when you need to inspect a large area, locate a missing grid or observe a player without physically piloting a ship. Keep normal gameplay controls separate from administrative actions so you can tell whether a result came from the Admin Screen or from an ordinary block, power or ownership change.

For automatic settings in the Admin Screen, click Submit Changes. Changing a value and closing the panel is not enough; the setting does not become active until it is submitted. After submission, test the result in the affected area or with the affected player.
Understand destructive controls
Advanced Admin Screen options can delete content from the current world. A deletion may affect a grid, character, floating object or another piece of world state and may not be recoverable through an ordinary undo command. Treat every destructive control as a production change: save or back up first, change one thing, submit it, and verify the result.

What belongs in Dedicated Server Manager
The official manager separates server-wide administration from the in-game screen. Its four main areas are Server Settings, Plugins, Remote Client and Console.
Users and permissions
Use the Users controls to manage administrators, bans and reserved slots. Promotion belongs here when you are working through the manager. A player can be online for promotion, while bans and reserved-slot assignments are server policies that should be reviewed independently of any one game session.
Mods
The Mods area manages the active mod set for the server. Mod changes can alter available blocks, scripts and world behavior, so schedule them as server changes rather than experimenting on a live session without a backup.
MotD
MotD controls the message displayed when players connect. Use it to communicate maintenance windows, rules or a planned restart without relying on a moderator to repeat the information in chat.
Maintenance
Maintenance provides automatic restart and automatic update controls. These settings are useful for a long-running server, but a restart still interrupts players; choose a schedule and announce it through the MotD or your normal community channel.
Console and server settings
Server Settings contains the ordinary world and gameplay configuration, while Console exposes the running server’s log and command output. If a change does not appear in the Admin Screen, check the manager’s configuration and console rather than repeatedly pressing the in-game shortcut.

Administer a server without joining the game
Keen describes Remote Client as a way to administer a server without connecting to it in the game. This is useful when the operator is travelling, when the game client is unavailable, or when you want to moderate a server without occupying a player slot.
Monitoring
The Remote Client monitoring view reports simulation speed and gameplay state. Use it to determine whether a problem is a server-wide simulation issue or a single player’s local connection problem before changing settings.
Players and chat
Remote administration exposes global chat plus lists of connected, banned and kicked players. This lets an operator communicate, remove a disruptive connection or review the current moderation state without flying to the player’s location.

World-entity lists
Remote Client administration also lists grids, characters, floating objects, planets and asteroids. These lists are valuable when a player reports a missing grid or when an object is suspected of contributing to a performance problem. Identify the exact entity before taking action; similarly named grids or characters can make an otherwise correct deletion destructive.
Practical administration procedures
Help a stuck grid
- Use Remote Client’s entity list or Spectator Mode to locate the grid and confirm its owner.
- Check the server’s simulation state before changing the grid. A low simulation speed may indicate a broader load issue.
- Open the Admin Screen with Alt+F10 if the intervention is an in-game property or movement correction.
- Change only the setting needed to release or stabilize the grid.
- Click Submit Changes when the setting is automatic, then verify with the owner.
Investigate a performance-intensive block setting
- Record the affected grid, block and player report before editing anything.
- Back up or save the world.
- Apply one corrective setting in the Admin Screen or the appropriate server configuration area.
- Submit the change, then watch simulation speed in Remote Client.
- If performance does not improve, revert the single change before trying another one. This preserves a clear cause-and-effect trail.
Moderate a player
- Open Admin Tools → Chat and Players in the manager or Remote Client.
- Use the online list and chat context to identify the correct account.
- Promote the account only if administrative access is actually needed; otherwise use the relevant kick or ban control.
- Document the action and its duration in your community’s moderation records.
Remove a world object
- Back up the world before opening a destructive control.
- Locate the object in the Remote Client entity list and confirm its type and owner.
- Use the least destructive available action.
- Submit the change if required, then verify that unrelated grids, characters or floating objects remain intact.
Safety rules for live servers
- Back up before broad or destructive changes. Advanced Admin Screen options can delete world content.
- Make one change at a time. Multiple simultaneous edits make it difficult to identify the setting that caused a problem.
- Submit and verify. Automatic Admin Screen settings require Submit Changes; check the affected player or grid afterward.
- Stay within supported ranges. The server documentation warns that numerical values outside the normal user-interface range are unsupported and can seriously affect gameplay or performance.
- Protect remote credentials. Never disclose the Remote API secret key or store it in a public repository.
- Plan restarts and updates. Automatic maintenance can disconnect players, so use a predictable schedule and a visible MotD.
Troubleshooting: why Alt+F10 does not work
You were never promoted
This is the most common cause. Connect the account to the server, open Admin Tools → Chat and Players → Online, select the account and press Promote. Rejoin after promotion if the current session does not receive the new permission.
You promoted the wrong identity
Verify that the player name in the manager belongs to the same account you used to join. A second Steam or console identity, a family member’s account or a test account will not receive your promotion automatically.

The remote connection is not authenticated
For VRage Remote Client, check the HTTP URL, port and secret key. A wrong endpoint or key prevents the client from reaching the player-promotion tools, so correct the connection before troubleshooting the keyboard shortcut.

Another application, overlay or keyboard layout can capture the key combination. Test the shortcut with overlays disabled and confirm that the game window has focus. Do not assume an intercepted shortcut means the server permission is missing; check promotion in the manager first.
You expected a server-wide setting
The Admin Screen is session-focused. For bans, reserved slots, mods, MotD, maintenance, global monitoring or entity lists, use Dedicated Server Manager or Remote Client instead of looking for an equivalent in-game button.

When Torch is worth considering
Torch is not required to use the vanilla Admin Screen or official Remote Client. Its project describes live management, chat and command execution without joining, real-time entity changes, configuration editing and plugins. Those capabilities can be useful for an advanced PC server that needs frequent live operations or extensions not provided by the official manager.

Keep a restorable backup and test the deployment on a copy of the world first. If your requirement is simply to promote an admin, inspect simulation speed or remove a player, the official tools involve fewer moving parts.
Recommended operating pattern
- Use Dedicated Server Manager to configure the server, promote administrators, manage bans and reserved slots, set mods and MotD, and schedule maintenance.
- Use Remote Client when you need monitoring, chat, player lists or entity lists without joining the game.
- Use the Admin Screen for immediate, in-world interventions after the account has been promoted.
- Use Spectator Mode when inspection is safer or faster than travelling as a normal character.
- Use Torch only when its live-management or plugin features justify adopting third-party software and its compatibility has been verified.
This division keeps permissions and server-wide policy in the manager, remote operations in Remote Client, and moment-to-moment gameplay intervention in the Admin Screen.
