Telegram synchronizes cloud chats, media, and files across your devices. Secret Chats work differently and are covered below. Telegram notes that its FAQ may not reflect every recent interface change, so button and menu labels can vary by platform.
Find someone and send a message
Find a contact or search by username
Start a new message and choose a person from your contacts who uses Telegram. You can also search for a username. A public username makes an account discoverable in global search and lets people contact its owner without knowing their phone number. That convenience can also invite unsolicited messages, so use a username only if you are comfortable being easier to find.
Send text, photos, videos, or files
Open the person’s conversation, type a message, and send it. Use the attachment control in the conversation to choose a photo, video, or file. The exact icon and menu placement depend on the app and platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

-
One check: Telegram says the message reached its cloud; the recipient has been notified if they allow notifications.
-
Two checks: The recipient opened Telegram and opened the conversation containing the message.

Choose between a group and a channel
| Feature | Best for | How people participate |
|---|---|---|
| Group | Conversation among members | Members can discuss with one another. Groups can have administrators and invite links. |
| Channel | Broadcasting updates to subscribers | Owners or teams publish posts. By default, posts appear under the channel’s name and photo, not an individual poster’s name. |
Public channels can be found by username. Private channels require an invitation or link. Telegram says public group and channel content is accessible to everyone, so do not treat a public post as private.
Set basic privacy preferences
Decide who can see your phone number
Open Telegram’s privacy settings and review the phone-number visibility control. The exact path and label can differ between iOS, Android, and Desktop. Telegram says phone-number visibility is configurable, but people who already have your number saved may still see it.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Choose whether to use a public username
A username makes it possible for people to find and message you without your number. If you prefer fewer unsolicited contacts, consider not setting a public username or limiting where you share it.
Be cautious with public content and bots
Telegram says public group and channel content is accessible to everyone. Bots are programs made by outside developers, not private Telegram staff. In a group, a bot in privacy mode sees messages directed to it; some bots can be configured to see all group messages. Telegram indicates broader access in the group’s member list. Check that indication and avoid sending sensitive information to a bot you do not trust.
Understand cloud chats and Secret Chats
| Chat type | Telegram’s description | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud chat | Client-server/server-client encrypted and stored in Telegram’s cloud | Chat history syncs across connected devices. |
| Secret Chat | End-to-end encrypted and tied to the devices where it was created | The chat does not appear as cloud history on a newly connected device. |
These are Telegram’s own product descriptions, not an independent security audit. The choice is principally between cross-device synchronization and device-specific end-to-end encryption.
