Spotify’s Jam and Mix features do different jobs: Jam is a live shared listening queue, while Mix adds transitions to a playlist you created. Blend combines friends’ listening tastes in a playlist, and Spotify Mixes are personalized recommendations. Use the steps below for the feature you mean.
Choose the Spotify feature you want

How to start and manage a Spotify Jam
A Jam lets the host and guests contribute songs to one queue while listening together, either in person or remotely. Spotify states that Premium is required to start and host a Jam. See Spotify’s Start or join a Jam help page for current support details.
Start a Jam on mobile
- Start playing music or open a public playlist.
- Tap Connect device.
- Tap Start a Jam.
- Tap Invite, then share the invitation link or QR code with guests.
Start a Jam on desktop
- Open the three-dot menu for a track or playlist, or right-click it.
- Select Start a Jam.
- Select Invite and share the QR code or link.
Join a Jam
Open the host’s invitation link, scan the QR code, or—with Spotify Bluetooth enabled—bring your phone near the host’s phone. Spotify’s guidance describes this nearby-phone method as working within about 1 meter. Choose in-person or remote listening, then tap Join. Remote joining requires Premium. A Free user can join in person and add songs when the host has Premium.
Use a TV or car for in-person listening
Spotify on a TV supports in-person Jam playback through the TV speakers. Open the queue’s Queue & Jam view to show the QR code for guests to scan or share. Host settings on that device can control whether guests manage playback or volume and whether invitations are automatic.

Spotify also documents in-person Jams through Android Auto and CarPlay. Its current Android Auto guidance calls for Android Auto 14.5 or later and Spotify app version 9.0.50 or later; these are Spotify’s stated support requirements, not a guarantee that every vehicle or setup will work. In the car, the host can review or remove guests and manage the queue.
Choose a speaker and set guest controls
Spotify says Jam works with smart speakers and most Bluetooth speakers. The host can restrict guest playback controls so that guests can add songs without changing what is playing. Shared volume control is supported on Chromecast and Amazon Cast, but not on Bluetooth devices or Apple AirPlay. If starting a Jam fails, Spotify advises checking that the host has an active Premium subscription and that the intended speaker is selected. For volume control, check that the playback device supports it and that the host setting permits it.

How to add transitions with Playlist Mix
Playlist Mix—also described by Spotify as Mixed Playlists—adds transitions between songs in a playlist you created. Spotify’s Mixed Playlists instructions say the feature is for Premium. The Mix control applies Auto transitions, and the editor lets you adjust individual transitions.

- On desktop or mobile, open a playlist you created.
- Select Mix to apply Auto transitions across its tracks.
- To customize a transition, select the transition row between songs.
- Adjust volume, EQ, or an effect such as a low-pass or high-pass filter, then save.
Each song displays its BPM and Song Key while the playlist is mixed. You cannot edit transitions in Offline mode. Turn Mix off to play the playlist normally; turn it on again to restore the saved transitions.

Understand Mix playback limits
- Premium listeners hear the transitions; Free listeners hear the playlist as a regular playlist.
- Mixed playlists can play with transitions on speakers and other devices over Bluetooth.
- When played through Spotify Connect, a mixed playlist plays as a regular playlist rather than using its transitions.
How to create a Blend with friends
Blend is a persistent shared playlist based on participants’ listening activity, not Jam’s real-time queue. Spotify says it updates daily and allows up to 10 invited friends. Profile pictures and usernames may appear in social recommendation playlists. See Spotify’s Social recommendations in playlists help page.
Create a Blend on mobile
- Open Your Library.
- Tap Plus, then choose Blend.
- Tap Invite and share the link.
Create a Blend on desktop
- Go to Search → Browse all → Made for You.
- Select Create Blend, then Invite.
- Share the invitation link with friends.
Where to find Spotify Mixes
Spotify Mixes are personalized playlists, not a feature for adding transitions to your own playlist. Spotify lists Daily, Artist, Mood, Decade, Genre, and Niche Mixes. Find them at Search → Browse all → Made for You. The Spotify Mixes help page describes these personalized categories.

Which playback route should you use?
- For a shared live queue: start a Jam and invite guests by link or QR code. Use the host’s supported speaker or car setup.
- For transitions in a playlist you made: turn on Playlist Mix, then play directly or over a supported Bluetooth route. Avoid Spotify Connect if you need the transitions.
- For a playlist reflecting a group’s listening: create a Blend; it is a refreshed shared playlist rather than a live session.
- For personalized sets by theme: browse Spotify Mixes in Made for You.
