Spotify DJ is a personalized listening session that selects music around your taste and listening history, then adds spoken commentary about tracks and artists. It is a Premium feature: open Search in Spotify, search for “DJ,” and tap it, or look for DJ on Home. Once it starts, you can ask for a different kind of music, choose a suggestion, or tap the DJ control to change the mood.
What Spotify DJ does
Spotify describes DJ as a personal music companion that can play familiar favorites, bring back tracks you have not heard in a while, and introduce new releases. Spoken commentary provides context about music and artists. Spotify says its suggestions combine AI with insights from global editorial experts, but it does not publish a technical specification of how tracks are ranked or how much each input affects a session.

DJ is a listening session, not simply a request box: its selections are based on your history and preferences, and you can steer the session as it plays. Spotify’s February 2023 introduction explains the feature’s personalized approach: Spotify Debuts a New AI DJ, Right in Your Pocket.
How to find and start DJ
- Open Spotify and go to Search.
- Search for DJ, then tap the DJ result to start the session.
- On mobile, you can also look for DJ on the Home page.
Spotify documents both Search and Home as starting points. The precise placement can vary by device or rollout; if DJ is not visible on Home, try Search. Spotify Support’s current instructions are on its DJ help page.

How to steer a DJ session
When DJ is playing, Spotify Support lists four ways to change what you hear:
- Type a request describing what you want to hear.
- Tap the microphone and speak a request.
- Choose a personalized suggestion shown in the session.
- Tap the DJ control again to change the mood.
Requests can describe a genre, mood, artist, or activity. Spotify’s examples include “Surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before” and “Give me some electronic beats for a midday run.” Treat these as starting points, not exact commands: Spotify says it uses your request along with listening history, preferences, and other signals, so a prompt does not guarantee a particular track or outcome. DJ requests and Ask DJ are related, but different
DJ requests steer the music session. Spotify’s newer Ask DJ conversational experience adds the ability to ask for recommendations or music facts and context, including questions about what is playing. Spotify’s examples include “Start a session with new releases for my Sunday” and “When was this song first released?”

Who can use DJ, and where is it available?
Spotify Support labels DJ as a Premium feature. Market and language availability depend on Spotify’s rollout and can change, so a feature being described in an announcement does not mean it is available to every Premium subscriber in every country.
In an announcement dated May 7, 2026, Spotify said DJ was expanding to Premium users in Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, South Korea, Switzerland, and additional markets, bringing reported availability to more than 75 markets. The announcement also introduced French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese. Spotify Support says DJ is available in a limited number of languages and that the language can be changed through the DJ menu. Check the feature in your app and Spotify’s current support information for your location rather than treating that dated list as exhaustive. Spotify’s May 2025 announcement said DJ requests were available in English to Premium listeners in more than 60 markets where DJ was available. It also described voice requests in Android Auto after granting DJ microphone access on the phone. These are details from that dated announcement, not a guarantee about every current platform or market.
What beta status means for listeners
Spotify described DJ requests as being in beta in May 2025 and said non-music requests, such as requests for audiobooks or podcasts, would not produce results. Ask DJ is a separate conversational expansion announced in April 2026; Spotify’s warning for that experience is that answers may not be accurate or complete. Neither description guarantees that a particular music request or question will work as phrased.

Spotify reported in May 2026 that DJ had helped shape a more personalized listening experience for 94 million Premium users since its 2023 launch. That is Spotify’s figure for users reached, not a satisfaction score or a measure of how often each person listens. In May 2025, Spotify also said DJ listener engagement “has nearly doubled over the past year,” without defining the engagement measure. These company-reported figures describe Spotify’s claims, not independently measured outcomes.
