To monitor your Windows 11 PC with Sniffnet, install the Windows build that matches your device, install Npcap in WinPcap API-compatible mode, then select the PC’s active network adapter in Sniffnet and start monitoring. Sniffnet summarizes connections and traffic; it is not a firewall and does not show packet payloads in the app.
What Sniffnet can monitor
Sniffnet is a desktop network-monitoring app designed to inspect traffic on the computer running it. Its documented features include traffic statistics and live charts, local-network connection information, remote-host geography, domain and ASN details, service and protocol identification, and identification of programs generating traffic. See the Sniffnet project README for the current feature set; labels and features can change between releases.
It is intended for understanding activity on your own PC, not monitoring a separate remote computer. Filters narrow what Sniffnet displays, but they do not block packets or prevent an application from connecting. Use Windows Firewall or another firewall when your goal is to allow or block network traffic. The official FAQ explains these limits.
Install Sniffnet and its Windows dependency
-
Download Sniffnet from its official project page or GitHub releases. Choose the Windows package matching your PC’s architecture: x64, ARM64, or x86.

-
Open the downloaded installer and follow its prompts. If Windows warns about running the downloaded file, the project’s Windows installation guide says to choose “Keep anyway” to continue.
-
If the Sniffnet installer indicates Npcap is missing, use its “Open Npcap website” option to obtain and install Npcap, then complete the Sniffnet installation.
-
During Npcap setup, select “Install Npcap in WinPcap API-compatible Mode.” Sniffnet requires Npcap on Windows. The Npcap SDK and LIB environment setup described on the dependencies page are for developers building Sniffnet, not ordinary users.

Choose an adapter and start monitoring
-
Open Sniffnet and choose the network adapter associated with the connection you want to inspect. Depending on your PC, adapter choices may include Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or a VPN interface; availability and behavior vary by device and configuration.
-
Start monitoring from the app. Use its Overview to get a broad view of traffic and its Inspect view to examine individual connections. The current interface and exact control labels can vary by release.
-
Apply filters when you want to focus the displayed activity on selected traffic. Remember that filtering changes what you see in Sniffnet; it does not alter or stop the underlying network traffic.
The project’s analysis setup guide organizes setup around choosing a source, configuring filters, and exporting a PCAP capture.

Sniffnet is useful for spotting traffic patterns, seeing which programs are generating bandwidth, and reviewing connection details such as protocols or remote-host information. It is not a full packet-payload viewer: the app does not display the contents of packets in its interface. Its process-identification capability was introduced in Sniffnet 1.5, according to the project FAQ, so check your installed version if you do not see it.
For payload-level analysis, export a packet capture from Sniffnet and open it in Wireshark. Sniffnet supports exporting PCAP files; the FAQ states that it can import PCAP, PCAPNG, and CAP files as well. Wireshark offers deeper packet analysis, while Sniffnet focuses on a more approachable live overview and connection inspection.

Sniffnet cannot start a capture or reports a missing dependency
Confirm that Npcap is installed and that its setup used WinPcap API-compatible mode. If the problem remains, consult the Windows installation guide and the dependency instructions.
The error says “libpcap returned invalid UTF-8”
The official FAQ’s documented workaround is to enable “Beta : use unicode utf8 format” in Windows regional options. This recommendation applies to that specific error, not unrelated capture failures.
The interface has graphical glitches
The project README and FAQ describe switching the ICED_BACKEND environment variable to tiny-skia as a rendering workaround. It is not a general performance improvement. Consult the FAQ for current guidance.
A control or feature is missing
Check the installed Sniffnet version and the current project documentation. Sniffnet is actively evolving, and UI labels or feature availability may differ across releases.
