You can’t restore consumer Skype for Web on a Chromebook: Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025. For personal chats and contacts, Microsoft’s recommended route is to sign in to Teams Free with your Skype credentials. Microsoft says eligible chats and contacts transfer automatically, though some conversation types are excluded.
What “Skype for Web” support means for a Chromebook
Microsoft’s Skype for Web compatibility page listed desktop Google Chrome version 87 or higher as supported for messaging and calls. That is legacy browser-compatibility information, not evidence that consumer Skype remains available. A supported browser cannot bring back a service Microsoft has retired.
Microsoft separately listed ChromeOS M53 or higher for the Skype Android app on Chromebooks. That threshold applies to the Android app, not to Skype for Web in Chrome. Both requirements are historical guidance in light of the retirement; see Microsoft’s system requirements and Skype for Web browser requirements for the original distinctions.

Sign in using the credentials for your Skype account. Microsoft says Skype users can use those credentials to sign in to Teams Free.

Check your transferred contacts and chats in Teams. Transfer is automatic according to Microsoft, but it does not include every conversation type. Microsoft identifies exclusions including private conversations and Skype-to-Skype for Business history; consult its guidance for the complete list and current account instructions.

If you have a remaining Skype balance or subscription
Microsoft says the Skype Dial Pad remains available to eligible users with existing paid access through the Skype web portal and Teams Free. This is a limited residual option, not a way to reopen ordinary Skype messaging or calling for everyone. New Skype subscriptions, Skype Numbers, and Skype Credit purchases are no longer available. Check Microsoft’s retirement and account guidance before relying on residual access; eligibility and access depend on the account.

No: Microsoft says the consumer Skype retirement did not affect Skype for Business. Work or school accounts follow a separate product and support path, so use the instructions from your organization rather than treating them as personal Skype accounts.

What Chromebook troubleshooting can—and can’t—fix
Updating Chrome, changing Chromebook settings, or replacing a webcam cannot restore retired consumer Skype. Microsoft’s published compatibility details do not establish Chromebook camera permissions, microphone settings, cache clearing, or network changes as fixes for this retirement-related issue. If you are troubleshooting a remaining eligible Dial Pad session, use Microsoft’s account-specific guidance rather than assuming generic browser steps will restore Skype.
