On a supported Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K, press and hold the Siri/Siri Search button on the remote, say what you want, and release. Siri can locate an exact movie or episode, or discover titles by genre, actor, director, topic, popularity, or age suitability. Results come from participating apps, so the titles and services you see depend on your country, language, device settings, and which providers support Apple TV search.

What Siri can search for on Apple TV

Siri handles two kinds of requests. You can name a specific title when you already know what you want, or describe the type of program you would like to discover. Apple’s examples include movie and show titles, topics, genres, actors, directors, popularity, and age appropriateness.

  • Exact titles: Find a movie, series, season, or episode by name.
  • Genres: Ask for comedies, dramas, documentaries, horror, or another category.
  • People: Search for movies starring an actor or directed by a filmmaker.
  • Topics: Describe a subject, such as cars, space, cooking, or history.
  • Audience suitability: Ask for shows or movies that are suitable for children.
  • Popularity and mood: Request popular comedies or funny horror movies.

Siri understands more wording than the examples listed in Apple’s guides. If one sentence produces no useful result, try the title alone or use a shorter description rather than concluding that the content cannot be found.

Check that your Apple TV supports Siri

Siri search is available on Apple TV HD and on Apple TV 4K models beginning with the first generation. Support also depends on the language and country or region selected for Apple TV. A person who already owns one of these models does not need a new Apple TV simply to use voice search.

Confirm language and region support

Apple maintains a list of countries, regions, and languages in which Siri on Apple TV is available. If Siri is missing or the remote does not respond, compare the device’s Language and Region settings with that list. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also says the Apple Account billing country or region must match a supported country or region selected for the feature.

Identify the correct remote control

On current Apple TV documentation, the button is called the Siri/Search button. Depending on the remote and software wording, you may simply see a Siri icon. It is the button you hold while speaking, not a normal tap-and-release search control.

How do I ask Siri to find a movie on Apple TV?

  1. Wake the remote. Make sure the Apple TV is on and the Siri Remote is close enough to communicate with it.
  2. Press and hold the Siri/Siri Search button. Keep holding it while you speak; do not release before finishing the request.
  3. Say the title or request. Use a direct phrase such as Find Dune, or ask to play a named movie or show.
  4. Release the button. Apple TV processes the spoken request after you let go.
  5. Choose the result. If several movies or shows have similar names, Siri presents choices. Select the title and then the provider or playback option shown.

For an episode, you can be specific: Play Episode 3 of Season 1 of [TV show]. Replace the bracketed text with the actual series name; the brackets are not spoken.

Useful Siri phrases for finding movies and shows

Natural wording is supported, but these patterns make the intent clear:

Goal Example request What to expect
Find a known movie Find [movie title] Siri returns matching titles and may show more than one provider.
Open a known show Find [TV show] Select the series, season, or episode from the results.
Play a particular episode Play Episode 3 of Season 1 of [TV show] Siri attempts to go directly to that episode.
Browse a genre Show me popular comedies Discovery results are based on available participating apps.
Search by cast Find movies starring [actor] Results are filtered around the named performer.
Search by subject Find documentaries about cars Siri looks for documentaries matching the topic.
Combine mood and genre Search for funny horror movies The result set combines the descriptive terms where supported.
Ask for a recommendation What should I watch? Siri offers available viewing suggestions after voice recognition is configured.

Try one or two meaningful attributes first. Adding many conditions can make a request harder to interpret, while a simple phrase such as “comedies” or the exact title often gives a clearer starting point.

How to discover something without knowing the title

Start with the strongest filter

Say the category that matters most: a genre, actor, director, subject, or age group. For example, “Find documentaries about cars” is more useful than a vague request for something interesting because it gives Siri a topic and a format.

Add a second attribute when needed

If the first result set is too broad, combine two ideas: “popular comedies,” “funny horror movies,” or “TV shows that are good for kids.” You can also search by a person, such as “movies starring [actor].”

Change the wording after an unhelpful result

Siri recognizes many phrases beyond Apple’s published examples. Rephrase a failed query with fewer words, name the title directly, or substitute a familiar genre term. A single unsuccessful attempt does not prove that a movie or service is unavailable.

Can Siri search Netflix or other apps?

Apple TV’s general search checks participating content apps rather than every streaming catalog automatically. The provider list and the titles returned vary by country or region, and an app must support Apple’s search integration for its content to appear. Some results may open an app you already have; others may identify a provider where you can watch the title.

Therefore, Siri is best treated as a cross-app discovery tool, not a guarantee that every service or subscription catalog is indexed. If a particular provider does not appear, check Apple’s regional provider information for your location. You may also need that provider’s app and an active subscription to play a result; Siri search itself does not include the right to watch paid content.

Why a familiar streaming service may be missing

  • The service may not participate in Apple TV’s search system.
  • The service may be available in another country but not in yours.
  • The title may have left that service or be unavailable under your region’s licensing.
  • The app may not be installed, or the provider may require you to sign in before playback.
  • Your Apple TV language, region, or Apple Account billing region may not match the supported configuration.

These conditions explain why two Apple TV owners can speak the same request and receive different providers or no matching provider at all.

How to search YouTube with Siri

YouTube is a special case. Include the word “YouTube” in the request, for example, Search YouTube for Minecraft. Siri opens YouTube, or asks you to install it, and places the query into YouTube’s own search screen.

The general Apple TV Search app does not search YouTube. If you simply ask for a video without naming YouTube, the result may not come from YouTube’s catalog. Saying the service name tells Siri which app should handle the query.

What to do when Siri does not respond

Check Siri settings

  1. Open Settings on Apple TV.
  2. Choose General.
  3. Select Siri.
  4. Verify that Siri is enabled and review the selected language and region.

Compare those choices with Apple’s current list of supported Siri countries, regions, and languages. Also verify that the Apple Account billing country or region matches the supported location selected on the device, as required by Apple’s troubleshooting guidance.

Hold the button for the whole request

Siri listens while the button is held. Pressing it briefly, speaking after releasing it, or covering the microphone area can result in no query being submitted. Hold the button, speak at a normal pace, and release only after the sentence is complete.

Test with a short request

Use a known title or a basic phrase such as “comedies.” If that works, the earlier issue was probably the wording or the specificity of the request. Try the title first, then add the actor, genre, or topic.

Separate search failure from playback failure

Siri may find a title even when playback cannot start. A missing app, a sign-in requirement, a subscription restriction, or regional licensing can prevent viewing after the search succeeds. Select another listed provider when one is available, or open the provider’s app and confirm its account status.

Use the Apple TV app’s Search screen instead

Voice input is the fastest route when you know what to say, but the Apple TV app also provides an onscreen search workflow:

Siri voice search versus the Apple TV app Search screen

Consideration Siri voice search Apple TV app Search screen
Input Press and hold the Siri/Siri Search button and speak. Use the onscreen keyboard or browse displayed categories.
Best for Known titles, episode requests, and quick discovery descriptions. Visual browsing, careful text entry, and reviewing featured choices.
Search scope Participating content apps; YouTube requires naming YouTube in the request. Search and browse options presented inside the Apple TV app.
Handling ambiguity Siri can present multiple matches for a spoken title. You can inspect the typed query and select among visible results.
Regional behavior Results and providers vary by country or region. Displayed content and provider options also depend on regional availability.

Neither method creates a universal catalog. Both depend on the services that participate in Apple’s search experience and the rights available in your location.

Understanding provider, region, and subscription limits

Apple’s search results can show a title without guaranteeing that it is free, included with your subscriptions, or available in your country. A result may lead to a subscription service, a rental or purchase option, or an app that requires sign-in. Charges and access rules belong to the provider, not to Siri.

Provider availability can change, and Apple’s regional directory is the appropriate place to check which services are supported for a particular country or region. Avoid assuming that a provider listed in another person’s results will appear on your Apple TV.

Practical examples

Finding a movie by title

Hold the button and say, “Find The Martian.” Release it, then inspect the matching entries. If more than one result appears, use the title details and provider labels to choose the intended movie.

Finding a series episode

Say, “Play Episode 3 of Season 1 of [TV show].” If Siri opens the series rather than the episode, select the season and episode manually from the result page.

Choosing a family program

Say, “Find me some TV shows that are good for kids.” Review the returned titles and the age information shown by the provider. Suitability labels can differ by region and service, so treat the result as a starting point rather than a replacement for your family’s viewing judgment.

Searching a specific app

For YouTube, say, “Search YouTube for Minecraft.” For other providers, Siri can return their content only when those apps participate in Apple TV search; naming an app does not force an unsupported service into the results.

Limits worth knowing before you rely on Siri

  • No guaranteed complete catalog: Siri searches participating apps, not every service available on the internet.
  • No universal provider list: Country, region, language, and licensing determine what appears.
  • No viewing entitlement: Finding a title does not include a subscription, rental, purchase, or sign-in.
  • No YouTube results in general Search: Include “YouTube” in the spoken request.
  • No accuracy guarantee: Apple documents supported query types and examples, but does not establish a universal accuracy, speed, or catalog-size measurement.
  • No upgrade requirement for supported owners: Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models supported by Siri can use the feature; an existing Apple TV HD owner does not need to replace it solely for Siri search.

A reliable workflow for finding something to watch

  1. Confirm that your Apple TV is an Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K and that Siri is supported for its language and region.
  2. For a known title, speak the title directly before adding extra details.
  3. For discovery, choose one strong attribute such as genre, actor, director, topic, popularity, or age suitability.
  4. Add a second attribute only if the first result set is too broad.
  5. For YouTube, say “YouTube” explicitly.
  6. Inspect the provider and playback terms before selecting a result.
  7. If nothing useful appears, try a shorter phrase, check Siri settings, and consult Apple’s regional provider information.
