To turn on Caps Lock in Gboard, open the keyboard in any text field and double-tap the on-screen Shift key. Tap Shift once to turn Caps Lock off. Google documents this same gesture for Gboard on Android, iPhone, and iPad.
What the Shift key does in Gboard
Gboard uses its on-screen Shift key for Caps Lock. A double-tap on Shift enables Caps Lock so you can enter consecutive capital letters. Tapping Shift again disables Caps Lock and returns the keyboard to its normal state.
The gesture works on Gboard’s touch keyboard, so you do not need a separate physical keyboard, stylus, manual, or other accessory.

- Open an app that contains a text field, such as Gmail or Keep.
- Tap the text field so Gboard appears on screen.
- Double-tap the Shift key.
- Continue typing. Caps Lock is now enabled.
The important part is the double tap: one press is not the documented Caps Lock command. The official Android instructions identify double-tapping Shift as the action that turns Caps Lock on.

Turn off Caps Lock on Android
- With Gboard visible, tap the Shift key once.
- Continue typing with Caps Lock disabled.
If you have left the text field or closed the keyboard, first tap a text field to bring Gboard back, then tap Shift.
Turn on Caps Lock on an iPhone or iPad
- Open any app where you can type.
- Tap a text field to display Gboard.
- Double-tap the Shift key.
- Type normally; Caps Lock remains enabled for your consecutive capital letters.
Google documents the same double-tap gesture for both iPhone and iPad.

Turn off Caps Lock on an iPhone or iPad
- Leave Gboard displayed on the screen.
- Tap the Shift key once.
That tap turns Caps Lock off according to Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions.

- Enable: double-tap the on-screen Shift key.
- Disable: tap Shift once.
- Requirement: Gboard must be the on-screen keyboard in an active text field.
The platform difference is availability information rather than the gesture itself. Google’s iPhone and iPad help information says Gboard is available on iOS 9 and later. Google’s Android help page notes that some Gboard instructions require Android 7.0 or later, but it does not identify the Caps Lock instruction as one of those version-limited steps. Therefore, the Caps Lock page should not be presented as requiring a narrower Android version than Google specifies.
How to make sure you are using Gboard
These instructions refer specifically to Gboard’s on-screen keyboard. Start by opening a text field and checking that the keyboard shown is Gboard. If the keyboard on screen is not Gboard, the Shift gesture described here may not apply to that keyboard. Return to a text field where Gboard is available before trying the double-tap.

For the most reliable sequence, keep the keyboard fully visible, tap the center of the Shift key twice, and then type a few letters to confirm that Caps Lock is active. When you are finished, tap Shift once before continuing with ordinary mixed-case text.

What to do if Caps Lock does not turn on
Gboard is not visible
Tap inside a text field first. Gboard’s Shift key is part of the on-screen keyboard and cannot be used while the keyboard is hidden.

The first tap did not enable Caps Lock
Repeat the action as a double-tap on Shift rather than two widely separated taps. The documented command is a double-tap, not a single tap.
A different keyboard is displayed
Confirm that the keyboard currently on screen is Gboard. The instructions apply to Gboard’s own Shift key, not automatically to every keyboard installed on the device.
Caps Lock was enabled accidentally
Tap Shift once to turn it off. You can then continue typing with normal capitalization.

Important limitation about a single Shift tap
Google’s Android and iPhone/iPad help pages explain how to enable Caps Lock with a double-tap and disable it with another tap. They do not explain the full behavior of a single Shift tap in every typing situation. This guide therefore does not assign a separate function or timing rule to a single tap beyond the documented action for turning Caps Lock off.
